  1. Thanks for the post Sanjeev. Please keep them coming. Your experiences of India match mine, when I worked there several years ago for a total of 8 months. Great wealth - great poverty. Crazy traffic. Luckily, the pollution in Bangalore (where I worked) wasn't as bad, but this pretty terrible compared to Canadian standards. IMO, the young people of India will lead the charge to change the country significantly, especially the young women. It is a very exciting country with tons of potential.

  3. https://www.chicagofed.org/publications/chicago-fed-letter/2018/405 This is a nice introduction to Catastrophe Bonds (CAT). Others may know better than me, but I think this is one of the reasons that the insurance industry has been in a soft market for so long.

  8. Interesting article about the excess capital in the reinsurance industry. "We find an asymmetric risk / reward as we move through 2018 windstorm season. We calculate ~$60bn of excess capital in the industry. We believe this surplus capital could result in limited pricing improvement even with a material loss; much like the pricing reaction to 2017 losses. We expect SCOR's shares to be most exposed should a hurricane emerge, given highest disclosed sensitivities and most risk to its buy-back." https://ftalphaville.ft.com/2018/09/11/1536679537000/When-the-wind-blows-your-money-away/

  10. Pure speculation on my part - but maybe this is one of the reasons that FFH and the mgmt at AGT Foods decided to take AGT Food private.

  13. https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/canadas-fairfax-set-19-percent-093200572.html I thought Prem had indicated that Fairfax wouldn't be doing insurance company purchases for a while (perhaps he meant large insurance company purchases). I assume that the feeling was that the price is right on this conversion.
  14. Take what I write with a grain of salt. I could be off in my calculations. For ROIC, I used the formula of (EBITA X (1- tax rate)/(shareholder equity + interest bearing debt) For the past four years, I calculated (2017 - 6%, 2016 - 10%, 2015 - 10%, 2014 - 10%). Average 9%. From my quick reading of the company MD&A, and other websites, there appears to be a glut in lentils at the moment. According to Ycharts website, the price was at a high of 42.70 in May 2016. It is now currently 22.10.
  15. I have been slowly buying this stock over the past few months, averaging down as the price has decreased. Yesterday, the stock really dropped big time. I delayed purchasing more until today. I missed a big opportunity for some easy money. Oh well, at least I made a little money this one. My original reason for buying this stock was, - stable and but growing demand for product (pulses and lentils) - weakening Canadian dollar with a large amount of international sales - easy to understand business (although commodity business - one drawback) - nice dividend (3.5% - 4% yield) - Fairfax backing
  16. Thanks for posting. I wasn't able to the FAH AGM. This helps.
  17. Apparently, Prem is on BNN Bloomberg interviewed by Amanda Lang at 1pm Toronto time. I am not sure if I will have time to watch it, hopefully I can watch it online at a later time.

  20. https://www.economicswire.net/a-compelling-case-for-fairfax-financial-in-todays-environment.html I found a fairly recent article about Fairfax's evaluation. It makes similar points that have been brought on this threat before. Note, one of the author's points is that in the short run, achieving the 15% increase in book value may be difficult considering the large amount of cash and short term investments they are holding.
  21. Fairfax India is a Canadian domiciled company for Canadian taxpayers purposes. No different than Royal Bank from an investor - taxpayer perspective. In the future, if FIH starts paying dividends, they will be considered eligible Canadian dividends. FIH can be held within a TFSA or RRSP. No withholding tax on FIH dividends (should they start to pay dividends). No foreign reporting (ie T1135) required either. I hope this helps.
  22. I am in public accounting. Thanks for posting. I will watch out for this in the coming weeks.
