  1. Apparently Fairfax effectively owns 61.5% of Farmers Edge which was recently listed in Toronto. Anyone else buying or done any analysis on this stock?
  2. Red Notice is a must read in order to understand Putin and Russia today, imo. As a follow up, I then read Collusion by Luke Harding; he also wrote Mafia State (Russia), A Very Expensive Poison, and Murder in Benghazi.
  3. Still sticking to mostly cash, 80-90%. What are others doing?
  4. My best idea is to have lots of cash ready.
  5. Anyone else follow CRH Medical (crh.to)? down 16-17% today. Haven't seen or heard any news to account for the drop. Any news or rumours out there?
  6. KCLarkin You may be correct; I don't track stocks in the detail that you may. But I know it's at least a triple.
  7. atd.b on TSE. up about 90% with 7-8 years holding period.
  8. Wall St Journal today had a headline comparing health care programs and costs around the world. I'm not a subscriber so can't access it. If anyone has access, care to share?
  9. Cigarbutt - yes I enjoyed reading his winter report too. He's being very cautious now. Me too and am now about 80% cash. Will be very interesting next 6 months or so.
  10. I listen to CNN only occasionally but last nite I tuned into the CBO response to the Republican health care proposal to see what CNN was saying. So, for the first 20 minutes or so, they first presented the Republican Health Secretary pointing out what he thought about the CBO report, then they showed the Democratic response to the report. I thought that was fair and now knew what both sides thought in their initial responses. Yet, on this topic so many times I hear "oh, that's just the CNN report or side" or words to that effect. In other words, CNN only leans one way (ie Democrat) So what was CNN supposed to do in this case - only report one point of view re CBO??
  11. Perhaps, someone more knowledgeable than me, can compare Trumpcare, Obamacare, Canadian health insurance and European health care systems. That would be most revealing imo.
  12. Agree with Cardboard here. No one knows exactly when it will pop, but it will. An uptick in mortgage rates might do it or some other event we haven't anticipated yet.
  13. No buying. Did a little selling to continue raising my cash positions.
  14. And your explanation re why Saudi Arabia was not on the executive order is? I am not interested in debating what your explanation is, but I would appreciate your point of view on this question.
  15. As I read these posts, it looks like America has entered into a period of extreme polarization in recent times. It's like 2 sides of the political spectrum have dug into their positions and will not give an inch. Some posters here who did not agree with some points made were called a "Dem puppet" or "leftist demagogue". If you post actual stories with facts and sources about real people, they say you should know more about the media and how they report news. Re Khizr Khan and the Australian author Mem Fox, these stories have been reported widely. I will name some sources you can check for yourself: CTV news (private, non govt funded Canadian television network, CBC (a public television network), The Independent (British newspaper) and American news outlets like the Boston Globe and ABC. I checked Fox News but didn't see anything (but may have missed it if reported by them; please advise if they did). Personally, here in Canada, I have voted Conservative (leans right), Liberal and NDP (leans left). I vote depending upon the platform and individuals who are running to try and make an educated vote. I was not a fan of Bill Clinton, thought Eisenhower made a brilliant move starting the U.S. interstate system, Abraham Lincoln made very difficult decisions and history has treated him well. And in 2016, I really didn't think much of any of the candidates running for the Republican or Democratic ticket. I am not a card carrying supporter of any particular political party. We all have biases to some degree Cardboard. Travelling from Canada to Europe to work in the 1970's, I learned a great deal about how other societies went about governing their people, what history meant to them and how it shows up in their policies and thinking to this day, how they run their cities and traffic flows which were very different than my own experience back home. I could go on and on re my learning experiences. And from my 3 years overseas, I know it changed how I thought about things and life; and I feel to this day that I am the better for it. I have no desire to change a Republican into a Democrat or vice versa. From the viewpoint of someone not in the U.S., I have tried to point out and am trying to figure out why certain events are occurring. One last thing: I would really like someone to explain to me why Saudi Arabia was not on the list of countries that President Trump signed yesterday. My understanding is that most (all?) of the terrorists re 9/11 were raised in Saudi Arabia. And Bin Laden was too. The last time America was attacked with such ferocity was Pearl Harbour and the U.S. went to war vs the Axis powers.
  16. Cardboard To answer your question, yes I have travelled to the U.S. many, many times. Golf trips, vacation, business and to see friends. And yes, I have travelled to Europe. In fact my first full time work after college was at a Canadian private school in Switzerland. I have visited and camped and hitchhiked all over Europe. You name it, I've probably been there. While I'm at it, I've travelled and worked as a consultant in Ethiopia, been to Morocco, vacationed in Australia and New Zealand, took a 5 week tour of China, visited Mexico and Peru and oh yeah, even England, Scotland and Wales. So I have seen and been thru many checkpoints (even Checkpoint Charlie when Berlin was separated in two). Never had a problem in any of the above places. But some of these stories that are now emerging dealing with legitimate citizens, with valid passports and paperwork, from countries that are your allies, are appalling. Sorry you cannot see your society is changing rapidly and maybe not for the good. The rest of the world is watching and is worried.
  17. RE "98% of our officers do the best job they can", did they do that under Obama too? if so, what is your problem with immigrants? or are these all new officers appointed by your new Administration?
  18. Desert-Rat Have no idea what that last post means or was trying to say. Came thru rather garbled.
  19. ScottHall "boring"?? this is real life. this is happening in your country. if you want to post something substantial, I'm all ears. And I will either agree or disagree with you. But "boring"? Surely you can do better than that.
  20. Desert-Rat Once again you did not report all the facts, just the part that fits your opinion. Yes, she was detained in December and asked to come back the next day. Reason: U.S. immigration had problems with their computers! She came back next morning and was allowed in.
  21. Desert-Rat Wait til next winter. For 2017, most Canadians had already paid for their accommodation for Jan-March (this happens 6-12 months before they arrive), so probably nothing unusual re numbers. Let's see what the numbers are after one full year of Trump. Let's check the stats then, ok? If I'm wrong, I will admit it. Will you? RichardGibbons +1 re your comment on Orwell. America is getting closer and closer after just 2 months with this new Washington White House. I'm beginning to wonder if any Trump voters have ever heard of Orwell or read his book.
  22. Cardboard Your obvious bias is coming thru time and time again. I'm trying to post real stories from real people who have never experienced such rejections, humiliation, etc in their lives. And they have travelled to and from the U.S. many times. The Australian childrens author visited your country 116 times under Republican and Democratic Presidents, but has never seen anything like this. And you think all Presidents act like Trump. The world disagrees with you.
  23. rb There are thousands of Canadian Snowbirds who travel to Florida and Arizona during the Cdn winter. As more of this stupid, terrorist stuff keeps happening to innocent folks, more Snowbirds will be reluctant to go there. Just wait to see what happens to the Florida and Arizona economies who depend upon these thousands going there every year. What goes around, comes around.
  24. Desert-Rat So tell me why you think Saudi Arabia was not on the list signed by your President today. That's where most of the 9/11 terrorists came from. Bin Laden included. Or is it because the U.S. sells millions of arms to the Saudis every year and your President has business interests there? No "snowflake" here, but you need to wake up to real facts and evidence, and stop listening to social media and fake news.
  25. And here's another recent one. An Australian woman, aged 71, and the most famous Australian children's books author (name Mem Fox) was detained for 2 hours along with 20 other travellers at LA Airport. She was agressively asked about her finances, etc and the nature of her trip. She was to talk to a large group about children. She has visited the U.S. a total of 116 times with no problems. Here is one of her quotes: "The worst part of it (the detainment) was that I was questioned not because she was a children's author but because I was just anybody." Eventually, with her visa, she was allowed in. She has now said that after this frightening incident she will not be returning to the U.S. anymore. She felt totally humiliated by the questions being asked. If you are an American, I would be getting worried. Who is next? You?
