Resurrecting the old thread on this topic - what are the results for various board members? I lost 10 lbs so far and am hoping to shed another 2-3 pounds by end of the year.

Had my blood/urine test done along with kidney and liver function - everything is in good shape. Blood pressure and heart beat rate is also in great shape.

cheers!

Not doing a "diet" really but I've been eating low carb after getting inspired by reading Gary Taubes about 7 months ago.  I've lost about 43 pounds.  Down from 225 to about 183.  My blood pressure is great now.  I feel incredibly better than I used to on a daily basis.

I don't know how this will all end up, but I suspect KO will go through a low P/E phase somewhere down the line:

Yikes, 25g of fructose/day is too much for the liver to handle.  That's hardly anything.

No Coke for you!

I wonder if they break out sales by brand somewhere, couldn't find it in their 10K. I wonder how their waters (Dasani, etc), healthier drinks like juices -- Simply, Odwalla, etc., are doing over time compared to legacy drinks.

I recently noticed that I was up to a weight that was easily the heaviest in my life, so I decided to quit eating anything with any form of processed sugar in it. No muffins, "health bars" with cane sugar, tea with sugar - nothing (I still have been eating fruit and other foods / drinks with naturally occurring sucrose or fructose) and I dropped 9 lbs in about 3 mos. I had no idea how many things have a secret dollop of sugar in them. I also have a lot more energy.

  • 2 weeks later...

I saw this tonight on Netflix.  Very good by the way.  Never mentions sugar, but I won't look at animal products the same way again.  Makes me think about cutting way back on the animal products.

Curiously, it makes a claim that drinking milk actually increases the rates of osteoporosis.  The claim is that the rich protein content in milk contributes to a condition in your body called acidosis -- and your body buffers the condition by releasing calcium from your bones to buffer it.

Really?  They showed a chart of the countries that drank the most milk -- these were the countries that also had the highest rates of osteoporosis.

I'm still doing very well on the low carb diet.  I was about 225lbs at the beginning of the year, ~190lbs after 3 months and 178lbs today (about 9 months on the diet).  My bloodwork comes out better and better every time I get it done. I've had it done in December/2010, then April/2011, then again in July/2011.  In July my triglycerides were down to 77 (from 140's in Dec).  My HDL (Good cholesterol) was up to 65 (from 30's in Dec).  My A1C improved well into the normal range from pre-diabetic range in Dec.  Everything else was in normal range in Dec and stayed normal in April and July. I'm going to get more bloodwork done at the 1 year mark in December.

I'm still having a lot of fun with the food I can eat and experimenting with new things. Last night I made pork-chops dipped in egg, "breaded" with coconut flour then deep-fried in lard.

I saw Forks over Knives in Portland a few months ago and was also impressed. I was similarly fascinated by (the book) The China Study by T.Colin Campbell, which essentially compares eating habits in the US with eating habits in China and then compares chronic disease patterns in the US and in China. It is an eye opener.

Seems to me that one of the most significant shifts in terms of healthcare, use of resources (especially water, but also topsoil and feed), not to mention ethical treatment of animals - would be a shift to a less meat-centered diet in the US. Few people realize how significant an impact it has on our economy.

The part that really impressed me was when they took the heart bypass patients and switched them to a diet of ZERO animal products.  Their arteries actually healed, the damaged cells were repaired.

Something it also mentioned is those Viagra candidates are having this disfunction due to damage to their arteries.  This is actually an early warning sign for their heart disease.

You should read the book "The untold story on milk" by Ron Schmid, I think that is right, don't have the book  in front of me. Any ways he has lots of comparisons of countries that were high users of milk and their bone and teeth structures. Also results of some studies that are interesting but I'm sure wouldn't be allowed by researchers today, I remember one involving cats. Either way you probably wouldn't look at the milk in the supermarket the same way after reading.

Congratulations Eric. How did you reduce tri-glycerides and increase HDL?

Basically a low carb diet.

1) I try to eat 20grams of net carbs or fewer per day.  (net carbs = total carbs - fiber), I go over sometimes, but not by much.

2) I try to keep my sugar consumption as close as humanly possible to 0g/day.  I am very strict with sugar, I simply won't eat anything with added sugar. Any sugar I do consume is naturally occurring in the food itself (i.e. blueberries).

3) Any carbs I do eat come from vegetables and a small amount of berries.

That's basically it.  In practice in a typical day, my meals look like this:

BREAKFAST:  eggs and meat. Sometimes cheese.

LUNCH:  Salad (a lot of veggies) with some meat and/or a hard boiled egg. Topped with olive oil and a little vinegar.

DINNER: I eat about half vegetables and half meat/fish/or eggs.  Example chicken and broccoli, steak and green beans, etc.

SNACKS: 0-1 per day, some examples are: nuts, or berries on whipped heavy cream, or cheese&pepperoni.

DRINKS: I drink a lot of water (sometimes with a wedge of lemon or lime in it), I also drink 1-2 cups black coffee per day (hot or iced, no cream or sugar). Sometimes I'll drink unsweetened iced tea or hot tea.

OILS:  I cook with olive oil, lard, coconut oil, tallow, or grass fed butter.

Which reminds me, I try to use as much grass fed beef and dairy as possible because they have a better omaga3/6 ratio. I use omaga3 eggs and take fish oil pills as well for that reason.  I try to use non-processed foods when ever possible, I buy non-cured bacon with no added nitrates, for example.  And I also take vitamin D3 pills because I work indoors.

Good books to read:

"Why We Get Fat: And What To Do About It", by Gary Taubes

"The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet", by Robb Wolf

My diet could be described as Paleo with a small amount of dairy added (Butter, cheese, heavy cream).  Robb Wolf says "no dairy".

how graphic is this movie? I don't like the movies that try to convince you to not eat meat by showing slaughterhouses, etc..

They don't even mention slaughterhouses.

The part that is driving my thinking here, the big wakeup call, is the CANCER they are attributing to diets high in animal protein.  Specifically, the experiments around the casein protein in milk -- when fed to rats in amounts typical to our American diets, it gave them cancer.  Then they went back to their research done in the 1970s in China -- people who were exposed to the least animal protein had the least amount of cancer.

I'm probably not doing much good trying to summarize it.

Anyhow, the only time you see any blood and guts is a very brief shot of somebody under the knife getting open heart surgery.  That's it.

Nobody mentions the poor little animals and their squalid lives -- this isn't a PETA movie.
