How is Value Investors edge? I followed JM back on SA when it was free and I owned two dry bulk shippers, but never paid so stopped getting hia material when SA put it behind a paywall years ago.

Is his hit rate within shipping decent? I haven't owned a shipping company since, but am open to hard assets companies that won't be disintermediated by AI.

VIE is a great platform - the chat room features a bunch of excellent posters and it provides a lot of ideas even outside of shipping.  This past year the discussion around mining stocks was especially useful.  It’s also very good for timely information when news comes out about earnings or events.

His shipping advice and portfolios have performed very well but currently there aren’t a lot of obviously cheap shipping stocks - dry bulk and tankers seem to be the best sectors currently if rates remain high.

I’ve been a member for five years and thankfully they grandfather you in at your original rate because the current fee is more than double.

These guys really think they have FICO level pricing power? The enshittification is glaring.

See a lot of folks on Twitter reccomending Fiscal.AI over TIKR due to this.

Anyone have any experience with FIscal? I assume the Twitter folks are paid affiliates lol

free quickfs alternative.

https://alphafiling.com/

completely free unless you want to create custom watchlsits. it won't run into any of the quickfs issues since I am getting hte data directly from Edgar and parsing filings for additional details.

Expect this to get a lot better over the next few weeks.

i plan on keeping it free but you may see some ads in about a year or so. still experimenting and building it.

I use free Fiscal.AI for Earnings Call Transcripts (I find it quicker to read than listen) and have been v happy with it, but can't vouch for other features.

I am looking for a physical subscription and am considering valueline. I think someone here subscribed to valueline but can’t remember who. Wondering if they can provide a review? Not sure if any alternatives similar to valueline with historical data?

I get Valueline free through my library. If you like the binders, go ahead and subscribe. I'm getting lazier now, but I used to have a redweld and manilla folders when researching a stock and as part of that process I would print out a Valueline page for the stock and write my notes on the back for the thesis (to prevent thesis drift). Since you only have one sheet of paper, it makes you synthesize your thoughts clearly and briefly. (So for Crox it would've been a few bullet points (much higher margin than competitors, brand recognition, 5-6x FCF, buying back shares, growing overseas, and temporarily trading down because of horrible bolt-on acquisition).

I used to pay for SeekingAlpha but cancelled it. I liked that they had articles (even if a few years old) on some oddball stocks that it was hard to find info on, like Taylor Devices. At the $99 intro price it was worth it, but I didn't think it was worth $250 to renew. In economics i would be known as an inframarginal consumer.

COBF is more useful, IMHO, because people aren't commenting on 5 year old articles of small stocks on Seeking Alpha, but I can post about it here and get crowdsourced intel that isn't stale.

earnings call transcripts are free and pretty high quality now on perplexity finance and even google finance with live transcription. AI is good enough to pickup nuanced finance terms.
