Sold some of my BERY. The run up into a stock for stock merger has been pretty strong and I'd feel pretty dumb not taking some gains off the table until we.see how new management performs. Would have sold more if it wasn't a taxable.account.

IF (that's a massive IF) you have a balanced budget, a SWF can be beneficial in smoothing volatility of spend or being used to fund activity that benefits the country but takes it out of government reach (eg university education, research, etc). But the temptation for govt to dip their hand for political benefit is massive and if you run a continued deficit, the idea of using your assets for one thing while borrowing for your day to day spend seems silly.
-
Aren't seized assets already divided between the local/state/federal agencies responsible for their seizure? I think it's supposed to be both a funding source and incentive to seized crime related assets. To be meaningful, any SWF would need tens, if not hundreds of billions, of fairly liquid assets. The problem isn't figuring out assets, it's getting those who control or benefit from them today to give them up for use by generations down the road.
-
The concept of a SWF could be really interesting and if done properly, very useful. I honestly think Trump looked at Saudi Arabia and their ability to make waves thru investing from their SWF and thought he'd love the ability to have that power. But to be successful it needs to be completely independent of the swaying political control in the US. If it's just a political slush fund it will be.more dangerous than helpful. The odds of it actually happening are pretty low though. It would require congressional approval and it would require funding. Getting politicians to use assets for future generations benefits instead of immediately for their own is likely a non starter. But it's a concept worth discussing though.

Marc Rowan (CEO of Apollo) has great views on fixing taxes and reducing deficits at same time. It's pretty smart view.

They do. It's called income taxes.

Chamath is despised. He makes Vivek look loved and appreciated.

All of this stuff, if sold, would be spent immediately. Most SWF's are from trade surpluses or budget surpluses. That's why they are heavily weighted to oil rich nations. This idea that TikTok would go into it - where is the money to buy TikTok coming from to put it into the fund? It's not like Bytedance is just going to hand over the company when they could sell it. And every week that goes by with it off the app stores reduces value.
-
It doesn't have to invest in stocks. If you're doing something for the next 100 years the current valuations are somewhat moot.
-
I think it's a really interesting idea as long as it's managed completely independently. The real question is where's the money going to come from? Most countries use their trade surpluses. When you're running $tn deficits you need every penny you can find to keep the lights on. To be meaningful this needs to be a $trillion fund.

RONALD REAGAN (1988): "We should be aware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends, weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world—all while cynically waving the American flag." When you're too right wing for Reagan, it might be too late. -

I think tomorrow is only the first leg and people still hope it gets resolved before they kick in Tuesday. If no change there will likely be another couple of legs down. -

No he's a ficking hero to you and right wing nuts who drove all the advertisers off the site. Not to America or it would be growing and throwing off cash. -

In this analogy am I supposed to be upset because I couldn't buy Twitter myself? This makes no sense at all. If he wants to buy Twitter or tiktok or whatever, more power to him! But to call the company a success because it's still alive is just wrong. If you want to drink expensive whiskey, have fun! -

MSM traffic went to streaming, tiktok, YT and Instagram not twitter. The lack of growth at Twitter and the scattering of advertisers to the point he has to sue them is proof of that. Keeping software running is hardly proof of success. -

Did Laura or Sean feed you that line? Zero growth, suing your advertisers for leaving and barely able to cover your bills. That's hardly success -

You think Twitter is a massive success? He literally had an email 2 weeks ago that they were barely breaking even and growth was stagnant. Just wait till that debt comes due -

The problem is he ran on the distorted idea that tariffs are paid by the foreign countries not Americans. And Fox News took up the mantle and the mindless masses bought it. If he said he was raising taxes to reduce the deficit thru tariffs he would have lost in a landslide. The only derangement syndrome is watching the people twist themselves into a pretzel trying to justify why increasing taxes is a good thing when he promised tax cuts. -

So if Greg (and i) are right that this likely a short lived drama that gets solved with a meaningless promise to let Trump act like he got something, are you saying this is the best outcome for America? The chaos and disruption and meaningful harm to global relationships was worth it for that? And I know you're reluctant to take a stance on that without knowing where Hannity comes out on it.
