  1. A mathematician wakes up to find his house on fire. He frantically looks around before seeing the fire extinguisher on the far wall of the room. "Aha!" he says, "a solution exists!" and goes back to sleep. -- Popular math students' joke
  2. Interesting interview by Rhonda Patrick of Aubrey de Grey, two very smart people who know the topic of the biology of aging: https://podtail.com/en/podcast/foundmyfitness/dr-aubrey-de-grey-and-dr-rhonda-patrick-talk/ It's already a couple of years old, so there's been developments since, but it's still very interesting and I'm sure most outside the field can learn a lot from it.
  3. I've probably listened to 15 hours of Rhonda Patrick interview recently, she's incredibly smart and well informed. Good starting points: https://peterattiamd.com/rhondapatrick/ https://overcast.fm/+KebtYdBkI
  4. Maybe rebuttal is the wrong word, but it's certainly an elaboration on what the actual science in the studies and meta-studies say (and don't say) rather than the headlines that everybody has seen and repeat.
  5. Q&A with the author: https://abnormalreturns.com/2018/07/05/qa-with-michael-batnick-author-of-big-mistakes-the-best-investors-and-their-worst-investments/
  6. Worth watching, for a good rebuttal of the recurring meme in media about supplementation being all bad/BS:

  10. Good books. They cost the same as crappy books, and the rights ideas can be worth millions if not billions of dollars.

  12. Isn't it great to have a commerce secretary with large stock holdings who's actively shorting things while in office? https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/02/wilbur-ross-shorted-two-additional-shares-as-commerce-secretary.html
  13. A new podcast launched today by Peter Attia, who has been a guest on a few other podcasts over the years, and he always stood out to me as a clear and independent thinker: https://peterattiamd.com/podcast/ Him as a guest on other podcasts: http://investorfieldguide.com/attia/ https://tim.blog/2014/12/18/peter-attia/ http://podcastnotes.org/2018/04/27/attia-2/
  14. This tool is very commonly used in dictatorships. Just read Orwell. Those who grew up behind the Iron curtain know this very well. Or read Trump's Twitter.

  17. Lately I've been listening chronologically through the archives of Jocko Willink's podcast. He's a former Navy SEALs, interesting guy. Not related (directly) to finance/investing, but certainly a lot of interest life lessons in there, as well as lots of cool historical anecdotes (most of the early episodes are him going through a book and then doing a Q&A). http://jockopodcast.com I discovered him through interviews he did with Tim Ferriss and Joe Rogan (he also did one with Sam Harris), if you want a good starting point. https://tim.blog/2015/09/25/jocko-willink/ https://samharris.org/podcasts/the-logic-of-violence/
  18. https://variety.com/2018/film/news/pixar-boys-club-john-lasseter-cassandra-smolcic-1202858982 This is pretty sad. I liked Ed Catmull's book about shaping the creative culture at Pixar. Seems like he should have focused on other parts of the culture too...

  20. Agreed.
  21. This feature exists in effectively any commodity business. Not only that, but crypto-mining equipment probably has a rather short useful life and needs to be replaced at frequent intervals to keep up. That's if it doesn't become worthless at some point because of proof-of-stake becoming more popular.
