He was totally making fun of buffett! come on! We know for a fact he was as well... Its obvious he was because Buffett refuses even when put on the spot to attribute any historical value to gold. When he bashes gold it is with a clear american agenda as he knows very well any bullish attitude toward gold would cause a mass exodus out of US Currency... In the transcript posted above Buffett was asked in a very straight forward way if he preferred gold over cash and he couldn't even answer, he had to change the subject and talk about farms. This is a topic that Buffett continues to distort while the cold hard facts prove that both he and his father understand the flaws in fiat money and the benefits to a hard currency. I have yet to hear one person ask Buffett if he thought the gold standard was bettter for america than the current fiat money standard, I would love to see him change the subject on that one. We have had this debate on this board before I and I don't wish to participate in it again.. I am going to stop posting about this now. If I remember correctly Buffet was publicly bearish the USD dollar for 2001 and above. He even bough basket of currencies and then moved to brazilian Real. So no he is not always cheering for the US. After reading a few posts from other board members I felt like the amount of media exposure was completely different from one to the other. I for example, listen to about 20 minutes of media on the radio per day plus read the headlines on this board. I have always felt that watching images on TV makes it more vivid and therefore transforms the information content to something more powerful; an emotional content. Therefore, I was wondering how people over here use the medias, and more importantly, how do they filter out the emotional part from the informational part? BeerBaron

http://blip.tv/makerbot/the-colbert-report-featuring-bre-pettis-ceo-of-makerbot-june-8-2011-5262194. This is amazing. KFRCanuk, thanks for posting the link. You might like this one from TED.com: 3D Printing raw consumables needs to come down big time. My guess is that they'll try doing the old give the printer, sell the cartridges techniques. The problem is that, while 2D printing is somewhat expensive, it's still a ridiculously small amount of my budget so I don't restrain from using my 2D printer. On the other hand printing a 3D part is quite expensive and people might not want to spend 30$ of consumables to print shoes that are lower quality then retail. BeerBaron

Tools are usually what's more important to pay for. By tools I mean in the broad sense, pens, computers, power tools, etc... There is nothing more frustrating then trying to do something with a tool that does not work properly. BeerBaron

Funny just opened a position yesterday. It's a pretty nice business that trades at 10 times earnings.Buffet doubling it's stake made me pull the trigger. BeerBaron Is that a WEB position? It looks like it might be a Todd Combs or Ted Wechsler, as opposed to WEB. I believe you are right, it's is the size of 130M so probably one of the two new guys. BeerBaron

Well, when I look at the TSX Venture down 20% in something like two weeks I'm happy I'm not too heavy in that space. BeerBaron -

Austerity's Future Unclear In Wake of Eurozone Elections

That not a good news, I want austerity to be the golden word in Europe, those Fairfax CPI derivatives are not going to turn into a profit by themselves :) BeerBaron -

E-L Financial's stock price discount a tempting value play
beerbaron replied to biaggio's topic in General Discussion
Empire quoted me the lowest for a term insurance. It was so cheap that I took out actuarial tables and calculated the present Value of the odds adjusted insurance policy VS the Present value of my payments. An to make a profit the insurance company had to use above 6% assumptions... Not good if rates stay low for a while! BeerBaron -
I tough Efficient Market Theories say that assets are never overvalued or under-valued. Making the current market as good as a buy then 4 years ago. Go figure why he's not walking the talk... BeerBaron

Questions for the early 'retirees' on the board

Martingale incurs the risk of losing everything and theoretically require an infinite amount of money. I see is as picking pennies in fort of a roller coaster. I'd much prefer Kelly or half Kelly. BeerBaron -
Isn't Z-Score relevant for banks or highly levered companies? Last time I check OSTK did not have excessive debt... BeerBaron
-
In theory one should apply the Kelly formula to size it's investment to optimize returns. The problem is not determining the potential gain but the odds of winning (level of conviction). It's not because it's hard that one should not use it tough! BeerBaron

I have a friend tell me he had 50 stocks certificates of Ford motor company from something like 1925 and he was wondering how much it is worth today. Most historical data I could find stopped 1978, where can I go to find out the total return? Regards BeerBaron
