  1. You have met my civil engineer daughter. :D
  2. Just because someone is smart doesn't mean they have common sense. There are many who my father referred to as "educated idiots". ;D
  3. Check Craig's as these come up quite often and are sometimes fairly cheap. Also check with your accountant as they might be switching to a more stylish binding system and have one in their back room.
  4. Don't forget the [amazonsearch]Big Red Dog [/amazonsearch] (Clifford?). The important thing is to read to them each day (we did it at bed time and then through out the day if we had time) and they will become avid readers.
  5. And then there are the locals that make money, have very conservative balance sheets and pay nice dividends. FBAk (First National Bank of Alaska) is one. Dividend is almost 3%, didn't loose money when Alaska lost roughly 25% of its population in the 1980's AND has a very conservative balance sheet and large reserves. It also is owned to a large % by the Cuddy family and is buying back it's stock. Another local, but am unsure how adequate their reserves are is Northrim. It has done quite well.
  6. It's probably a lot like my C.P.A., it means I was good at taking tests.
  7. I am currently reading the book "Salt, Sugar and Oil" which implies that they are better than nicotine.
  8. Hope you have a happy day and a healthy year!
  9. What will be the domino effect? Who owns the debt and will they be forced into bankruptcy when they can't pay their debt or pensions or whatever?
  10. I would buy discounted deeds of trust.
  11. Did you factor in the tax hit if he sold coke? What were disclosure rules as I believe he was on the board?
  12. Congratulations and thanks for the board. It takes a lot of guts to do what you did. Keep it up
  13. One advantage that local banks have is fast decisions. At the First National Bank of Alaska annual meeting, they pointed out they can have the loan approved in less than a week where Wells Fargo can take several weeks. They also have other community banks wanting to participate with them. They have actually started loaning local businesses for out of state projects.
  14. I read it years ago and have given copies to quite a few folks. It should be reread periodically. I believe that John Templeton suported the same basic idea, but had a much higher percentage.
  15. I believe it is called micro managing. IMHO - it means GOOD managers will go where they are allowed to manage.
  16. Way back in the dark ages (in the 80's) the government tried capping at a certain amount. All I remember was there was a "grandfather election" that had to be attached to the tax returns. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=860&dat=19890321&id=vqJUAAAAIBAJ&sjid=G48DAAAAIBAJ&pg=3052,8623529
  17. It has totally flip flopped. In the past GCI was fantastic, but now that GCI is bigger, they are terrible. ACS is fighting hard, but because they pis*ed so many folks off in the past (when they were #1) most are leery.
  18. We don't have Version. We have GCI (cable)or ACS (the telephone line thingy)
  19. question from a ludite: How do you get internet, if you cut the cable?
  20. I have always wondered why most companies will spend all their efforts to get a new client and not spend a dime to service their existing clients. example: Has your telephone carrier ever called you and said, " We can save you money over what you are paying us now?"
  21. You are a lucky guy - thanks for sharing your experience
  22. If it ain't broke....... ditto
  23. 0%, too big to get my head around
