This is my 1st essay assignment for ENC1101C, which I'll be turning in today. (I hope you find it useful.) --- I strive to be relentlessly upbeat, which keeps me motivated, and makes it easier to be compassionate towards other individuals. Success naturally follows. A good way to stay positive is to start the day right by using an opportunity clock instead of an alarm clock. An alarm clock wakes you up with a loud, obnoxious sound that’s sure to make you angry first thing in the morning. On the other hand, an opportunity clock starts your day with an upbeat song, or you may prefer to be awakened by the sounds of the ocean. Whatever your choice is, be sure that it’s something that makes you smile. Waking up happy sets a proper tone for the entire day. By the way, my current choice is “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers. We all know that it’s not possible to be positive & upbeat all the time; however, it is possible to change the way we view negative occurrences in our lives, by inverting them. For example: “I dropped an egg on the floor as I was making breakfast this morning, which provided an opportunity for my dog to develop a shinier coat, and I do like my dog to shine.” Next time you feel negative about something, try & think “what is the opposite, or inverse, of this?” Feel free to be silly about it. The real key to being able to “flip” a negative emotion into a positive one, is to look at things with equanimity, instead of with apathy or disdain. Try to accept a negative situation by saying, “it just is; so what can I do about it?” Removing emotion, and thinking more objectively about things, facilitates our ability to see possibilities instead of just roadblocks, and helps us to develop an understanding of, and have compassion for, the people we interact with, many of whom may be in a position to help us achieve our goals. I’m a compassionate individual, & I believe that caring about the success of others, is in my best interest as well as theirs. Here’s a great quote by Zig Zigler “If you can help enough other people get what they want, you will get what you want.” Zig Ziglar is a popular motivational speaker, and he said a lot of smart things, including the following, “folks, if you see a turtle on a fencepost, you can pert near guarantee that he or she did not get up there, by him or her self,” which simply means, that we all need the help of others, in order to get where we’re going. My maternal grandfather was a super positive influence in my life, and I dedicate a big portion of my success to him and his attitude of compassion, acceptance & grace. I can barely remember him ever being mad about anything, and he always seemed to be able to find the best in people, which naturally drew success into his life, & the lives of his family and friends. Staying positive keeps me motivated, and being compassionate towards the people I meet, facilitates the attraction of mutually beneficial relationships, which we all need in order to live effective & prosperous lives. Of this, I am positive. UB2…

Those are in tab, which I can read (and they give the letter chord, for a fuller understanding of what you're playing.) If they were written on a staff, I'd need another year to be able to follow them. -

Easy peasy! BTW, RiffStation is an awesome website (thanks.) Be patient, I'm jammed up right now, but it will be done & videoed. -

I just saw this. Thanks John! What's your favorite song? I'll work out an arrangement & dedicate it to you. (Disclaimer: may take up to a year as I'm friggin' swamped right now, but it will be done.) After a lot of thinking - during several days: Are you serious about this, DooDiligence? [Edit: Somehow, I suppose DooDiligence is used to this question - as a [retired] sailor - so, it's all about me, and my own safety ...] And No!, this is not the place to laugh! Yes, I've found something very special to&for you. Willing to proceed? It's a song about love. Hit me baby (I hope it's classical so I don't destroy my nails. If it's not, I'll re-arrange & lounge it out.) I'm presently only working on Lonesome Stranger (crushing on EC fingerstyle) outside of the classroom & will put it in the cue (may take a while as stated before.) -
Wow, I skipped over that but, wow again, looks useful. https://medium.com/thinkhow/the-shoe-button-complex-383aab1b1906 --- I like Howard Marks style a ton better & I don't think he's a shoe button dude.

++ simple fix! How about to grab this JPEG file named "cropped-cropped-Handover-Corner-Of-Berkshire-Fairfax-JPG-e1516151433460" from the site, fix it and send it to Sanjeev for a reinstall on the CoBF webserver installation? [ ; - ) ] -I have forgotten how to do [read: manipulate] this in i.e. Photoshop, and nobody has asked me to document my investment returns here on CoBF so far, so I've had no need to refresh my memory! Thanks everyone! I figured the site isn't going anywhere, and it was time to make it a bit more permanent and recognizable. John, I can send you the different JPEGS if you know what to do...I'm not particularly tech savvie. I believe doing a clear version wouldn't be that difficult if you know what you are doing. Cheers! Do you have a photoshop (or GIMP) file with all the layers? --- Oops, apologies to rk & ten for not reading your posts 1st.

Berkshire Hathaway Letters to Shareholders - Warren Buffett & Max Olson
DooDiligence replied to John Hjorth's topic in Books
I've had the Kindle version for about 2 years, & so far it updates each year with the latest for FREE! The Kindle "Letter's to Shareholders" & the early partnership letters are must reads IMO. Did that suck or what? I'm not a huge football fan but remember my Dad taking me & my Sis to a Harlem Globetrotters game where they played Archie Manning's Saints & from then on I was a fan of the Saints. Years later I had a side biz producing 18K fleur de lis for a number of jewelers around the state & was looking forward to a resurgence in biz to maybe move some old inventory & put an end to that chapter. Did biz with L. Berg a few times but he proved difficult to work with & I liked my regulars much better anyway (lower turnover but better margins & nicer people.) Tried to do biz with Borsheim's & Helzberg when I was repping a line of engagement rings but the owner just wanted to place ads in trade pubs & couldn't understand how a national consumer ad campaign would drive customers into stores for our designs :-\ ) Anyways, black & geauld baby! (next year...)

I've used both iPhone's & Samsung's with no problem in Brasil. I'm with Sprint & had to get them to do a SIM unlock (they make you jump through hoops & only unlock 1 phone per year on an active account.) Sprint uses CDMA while most of the world uses GSM & the unlock allows you to use the phone on a GSM network. I used to get Verizon phones (Apple & Samsung) & they were unlocked straight from the factory. In Brasil you can buy SIM cards from magazine stands & other sources & then you use a CPF number (the same as a Social Security Number in the US) in order to activate the SIM card & voila, you have a pay as you go phone. Haven't been to SE Asia in a decade so can't comment. That said, a lot of guys were using T-Mobile & could use their phones down there for both domestic calls (within Brasil) & calls to the US, all with no extra charges.

You asked about stock picks for 2018 so this may not be appropriate but I'm looking at protecting downside for the upcoming year. We don't make money by buying into a rosy consensus & I believe healthcare presents a lot of possibilities for the next 10 to 20 years, without all the good cheer by market participants. I'm around 1/3 healthcare: 3% ABC (trimmed a bit 4 a gain as I believe they're the most threatened in the long term by Amazon) 3.9% BBH (covers biotech biggies which I'm unqualified to look at but want exposure to) 4.6% CVS 6.8% DVA 7.1% EW (owned 4+ years) 6.8% NVO (owned a bit over a year & plan on owning 4 the next decade) I believe CVS will look ugly in the short term due 2 the AET deal but that they could emerge as a the 1st healthcare superstore by taking high margin / low delivery cost biz away from existing providers (hospitals, etc.) Work space is abundant (4 more Minute Clinics) but staffing up will be a constraint for CVS. (if they even execute on this.) --- Overall, long term bullish on healthcare, consumers & Berkshire (short term, no ideas.)

Who's at Fault for the Opioid Epidemic?

tede02 I am so sorry that you lost your Bro to this. --- Personally, I believe that the prescribing physicians should be the gatekeepers here. They have eyes on the patients & should be fully aware of their physical & emotional state (especially when pain management is necessary.) We've become spoiled by not having to endure pain which was commonplace in the recent past. --- After the 1st part of my hernia procedure, I was very paranoid about pain & simply didn't want to give it any chance of occurring but I learned pretty quick that it is easily manageable with OTC medications. I had a failed root canal earlier this year & the endodontist told me that re-working the canal to remove an obstruction would be painless since the nerve was already gone. I believed him & went without numbing & the only discomfort I experienced was from keeping my mouth wide open for 30 minutes or so & there was no need for even an aspirin afterwards. He couldn't clear & re-seal the canal so I had to have the tooth extracted which DID require numbing but the pain medication was only needed for the day after the extraction & after that I was fine. --- Maybe it's quicker/easier to go after the big guys than it is to gather up class action suits going after individual physicians? How much truth is there in allegations against ABC, CAH & MCK? Aren't the payers supposed to intervene here if for no other reason than cost containment? If we start seeing lawyers TV ads searching for clients who want to sue prescribing physicians...? Maybe we should start whacking our kids more often so they'll become a bit more tolerant to pain?
