  1. Who makes the plastic signs draped on the outside of a shop? For instance, does someone like Ace hardware use a local supplier or would they receive the sign from corporate? The majority of businesses and shops appear to have bought at least one sign in the past ~4 weeks
  2. If this was long term and there was not a virus around then people would have their kids in day care, at grand parents, or at school. Working from home would then become a much different experience then it is today.
  3. Mike's response was very interesting, thank you. I should not have said "more difficult to replicate" but should have said "very difficult to replicate" because I am not as familiar with Autodesks full suite. It's very similar to what Mike said but with design and analysis. Say I analyze a structure under 100yr loads. Relevant files and inputs will need to be sent to contractors and government approval agencies such as ABS for ships. These parties will be familiar and have validated the calculations of analysis software like ANSYS. If a lesser known package is used, you'll spend days converting to the proper file formats and defending the validity of the results proving the structure is adequate and safe. ANSYS has a big foothold in electrical engineering which is more of a growth industry then mechanical (unfortune for me). I would read their letter to investors from yesterday afternoon. It gives the sense that they are in a good position despite covid
  4. I work for a small consulting company doing ship design and would agree - AutoDesk, ANSYS, and similar products are the bread and butter of all firms. They begin marketing their software to students in university and are absolutely mission critical software. 1) We have a couple of licenses for autocad but use Autodesk TrueView for reading drawings or knock offs such as nanocad or draftsight for the majority of employees to mark up drawings. One or two employees draft for hours and hours and have the AutoCad licenses. Autocad is the best of the bunch. 2) Models of designs are continuously sent back and forth with clients. The client uses AutoDesk software (maybe Revit) to create the model and we view it with AutoDesk Freedom which is free. This is a very intuitive 3d geometery that can be moved around, walked through, review properties and materials, see if everything fits together, etc. 3) See 1 4) Boss has no interest in cloud due to security and we built our own analysis infrastructure years ago 5) Do not use collaborative software because we can do without and save money 6) See 2 7) I would imagine it is being used in some engineering fields but is non-existent in ship design. The ship design industry has been around a long time and is slow to embrace new technology and ways of doing things. Note – I purchased shares in ANSYS this morning and believe ANSYS has a more difficult to replicate product.
  5. Bought back my MA position and more which was sold about 15% higher
  6. Chuck Akre frequently talks about AMT during the 2001 recession being a great business with a bad balance sheet. AMT had great assets generating money but had a large debt obligation nearing. Purchases near the low are now >100 bagger. Does anyone have thoughts on a business in this situation today? My only guesses are: TDG SPG <-- not so sure
  7. How fast can we start an infrastructure project? Do we have drawings laying around for a beltway that we can blow the dust off and start by Easter?
  8. I heard last night from a family member who is in the C-suite of a major digital media company that they will be laying off many folks this week. Their content has never had so many eyeballs but no one is purchasing ad space.

  10. Teenagers live in my neighborhood. I had never seen them before. My wife and I are on a ridiculous amount of email mailing lists. The winery we went to 5 years ago, have never order from, and is located on the other side of the country has a Covid plan.
  11. I know a personal trainer who was receiving one more paycheck (2 weeks of pay) and then would file for unemployment. I know a car salesman and the dealership can't determine if they will go limited time because people need cars or if the sales department is closed and everyone files for unemployment. Either way no one is selling their typical amount of cars. I don't understand how the process works but it would seem that this is not picked up in any numbers yet. These folks are not spending more then required.
  12. Kclarkin - it's something I knew, understood, but overconfidence is a bitch!
  13. The rate of share price appreciation has shocked me as much as the rate they were decreasing 1-2 weeks ago. I couldve bought all the companies I owned back and had 20-40% more shares. Was greedy and had no idea how to react. Primarily in cash now with a net change of about 0% from when I sold.
  14. Maybe it was the distraction of having a baby boy born on Friday but I did not expect this type of rally from a stimulus package
  15. Remember 2 weeks ago when he said this was a national disaster, shook hands with CEOs, and falsely said Google had a website going live and the market rallied? This feels similar Maryland's republic governor has said each day that the administration is providing contradictory and confusing information. States will therefore act in their own best interest, as they have been

  17. Fidelity also has HSA and I like it
  18. I just feel the difference here is it is a medical problem with defined curfews and shut down of many businesses. The businesses will not be online until these restrictions are lifted. Therefore, many people will be in terrible positions until the medical problem is resolved
  19. Maybe we should be following the actions of the medical community. They are ramping up for tomorrow, next week, and the week after. Just heard from nurse family members that hospitals are calling in retirees if they would like and are considering allowing those without licenses to work (not sure how that last one works and what the person would do). Clearly, they are worried about future events. Physical retail will not all of a sudden be busy in 2 weeks.
  20. I agree with Ross - based on how the virus works it is very high probability that news is more dire in the upcoming days and the only good news could be a vaccine which sounds to have a very low probability
  21. the S&P is nearing the middle of the polling results
  22. A few companies have to make headlines before this is over (banks, restaurants, malls, office buildings, etc), correct? Imagine if WeWork was public....
