3, 2, 1... CP Rail announced the recession is here. I suspect the U.S. is a couple of quarters off. Cheers! https://financialpost.com/transportation/rail/cn-rail-traffic-drop-signals-canada-in-recession

Not sure. He had 97% voting support in 2021, then it fell dramatically in 2022 and then again in 2023. He's 77, which isn't much older than Prem and he's younger than David Johnston. He's attended all meetings in 2023. I can't find anything that would indicate a group of investors has an issue with him. Perhaps it was an accidental click by a large pension fund or investor...but that's a lot of votes...I can't see it being just one. Maybe some investor's are upset with Northbridge or something? I don't know. Anyone have any idea? Cheers!

What are you listening to ? (Music thread)

Brilliant! I suspect this is the direction most artists will take, as it will be nearly impossible to stop. Cheers! https://www.yahoo.com/news/grimes-offers-50-50-split-171053215.html -
Nice post of the AGM Viking! Didn't anyone take photographs with others or of the booths, etc? If you have some nice pictures please feel free to post them. Cheers!

Or "acclimate". Both work! Cheers!

I can assure you that Prem does not post, but he and others at Fairfax may read from time to time. Cheers!

Yes, but nominally. If book value is up 10% per share, you can assume ROE would be lower by a little less than 10%. Cheers!

Correct. The one net benefit is that analysts and investors could never properly value their over-reserving as it wouldn't be apparent till years down the road. Now it is clear in the underlying book value, so the stock should price more accurately relative to actual book value compared to how it was priced historically. Fairfax has become easier to understand...from the quality of the insurance businesses, earning power of the insurance businesses, income power from the bond portfolio with higher rates, simplifying the investment holdings, laying out succession plans, etc. All of this may help elevate FFH to A credit ratings and more consistent valuation relative to book value. I think if they reduced debt over the next few years we would get those A ratings and it would be priced more in line with MKL or BRK. Cheers!

That's just ridiculous! What was the justification for it? Cheers!

Not making excuses for this. I just remember how shitty New York was in the 70's and early 80's and New York today is nothing like it was in the 70's! Yeah, homelessness and crime are up from a decade ago, but it's still light years better than it used to be. These things go in cycles with the economy and politics...that's my point. Cheers!

Wow! Congratulations! Cheers!

You can pull thousands of such videos, while I can pull millions showing the opposite. Shit happens everywhere. Not saying that the courts couldn't be harder, but this is hyperbole! Cheers!

I'd say a higher percentage of straight people (extremists on the left and right) want to impose their views compared to the percentage of gay/trans people that do the same. The extremists in every group get far more attention...look at MTG or AOC. Look even on this message board...more people for your argument than against are posting on the subject, even though a higher percentage of the board doesn't like this stuff being posted at all! Cheers!

While the cities are young compared to driving the Amalfi Coast or something, I can tell you that driving the Pacific Coast Highway between Portland and San Diego is one of the most beautiful drives in the world, with ever changing coast lines and terrain. I've done this trip 4 times in my life and I would be happy to do it several more times! Cheers!

Deductions are an incentive. You want incentives to be in line with long-term goals of a nation and its citizens. Donations to institutions aren't solely for education, but R&D grants, which help keep the U.S. at the forefront of tech, development, medicine, etc. A lot of countries may have subsidized education, but they aren't propelling the world forward. It's the "teach a man to fish" parable...governments generally just give the fish to a group...targeted donations by high net worth/businesses tend to teach a group to fish. Cheers!

Great episode of Bill Maher today that covers exactly what all of us were talking about...frankly, I agreed with Piers Morgan and Bill Maher. Really, the world is looking for a centrist politician that makes rational decisions. I think all of us can get behind that type of politician. But can we find one?! Cheers!

A lot of people are saying that now. Everyone I know has told me to go to Spain first instead of the UK. Especially more remote towns and beaches. Cheers!

Sorry is this Vish Ram or Aaron Rodgers?! Cheers!

I would like to spend a month at a time in Europe over the next 10 years. I'm planning a trip to see England, Scotland and Ireland in September...my first trip to Europe! Cheers!

Very eclectic set of destinations...like a bucket list of places to hit. Have a great time! Cheers!
-
I would not want them making that decision unless they were at least 16 and understood all of the ramifications clearly. Cheers!

+1! Yeah, I think this is the first time I've agreed with Castanza. When it comes to God, Rk is all "I'm in!" Cheers!
-
Did you just mention guns! Fuck, here we go again! Cheers!

Are you sure about that...we're talkin' New York! I think we're coming to the end Spek...there seems to be some common ground appearing here...who woulda thunk it! Cheers!
