Capital account vs income account and business structure
CorpRaider replied to cloud's topic in General Discussion
Sounds like it is getting pretty frothy up there in the great white north. I though you guys were mostly sober, restrained, Jim Carey types. :D Anyone sort of looking forward to the next bear market, a little? -
You're supposed to say, "Get spread-sheeted, nerds!" haha.

How do you figure out what you don't know in investing?
CorpRaider replied to LongHaul's topic in General Discussion
Often wrong, never in doubt. -
There's also a CNN article which has a little bit more detail. The attorney who is helping with the estate mentions a focus on dividend paying stocks. He read the journal every day and was very frugal. It also says he was a mechanic in business with his brother and after his brother sold the garage, he became a part-time janitor in quasi-retirement. So that adds a little more color.

Neat story. I'm sure he was very proud to be able to provide such meaningful support to causes he deemed worthwhile.

Most disturbing: Pony tails and guayabera shirts.

I think the outside consultants are probably the guys hired to "kill the thesis." The analysts probably just monitor the fake mustache sales. "Selling like hotcakes boss." What did he say about JOE? I gather it was not, "I'm taking it over as my permanent capital vehicle. BB out suckas!"

Which is the better stock to purchase today: JPM or BAC?

Good question. I've been going back and forth. -

AVP, CRC. -
Well I will say all of this criticism of value investors and even value indices lately reminds me a lot of 2000. Although, RPV, VOE, VBR, PRF, etc...haven't underperformed.

How does a value investor go about buying a automobile?
CorpRaider replied to SmallCap's topic in General Discussion
...and then buys up 5th largest auto dealership in the nation. Like cherry cokes, get a lifetime delivery of Cadillacs? Haha. Yeah he kept right on buying, didn't he? -
Are all Compounding companies owner operated?

Thanks for flagging. I caught some/most of this on TV, but will be nice to binge watch. I think I also caught some extended super deluxe version once on H2. -
I saw that. Who knows? It wasn't unexpected. An open proxy war in Syria and Iraq, final countdown on Iran nuke deal and Shia rebels on the verge of taking over Yemen hasn't done much.

Badly run companies with upside potential
CorpRaider replied to LongHaul's topic in General Discussion
Hey, Tootsie Roll's CEO kicked the bucket. It was up almost 10% on the news... -
Probably wise. Who considered $50 Oil with large and hot proxy war going on in Syria and Iraq and Shia rebels on the verge of taking over Yemen?

Best Money Managers Looking Forward 15+ years

2 of the 3 are likely to be dead within that time frame. Maybe, but maybe not. But they are likely to outperform if they survive and you will know as soon as they die, so you can adjust your strategy. It is a lot easier to tell if someone is dead than if they have lost their "alpha". Also you can invest with each, even if you're a non-qualified scrub. I like my answer. Ok, ok Keith Meister. -

Tootsie is a good one. Don't they have impregnable dual classes of voting shares, so it can't be cleaned up? I would say EBAY. That is going to be rectified though. I'm looking to get in that one here pretty soon. Also re: COH....good call AND they're buying other businesses before they straighten out the one they are running. Freaking amazing. Rumors of good numbers next week sent stock up pretty strongly today though. -

Let me guess, the way to save everything is to buy gold....from his gold selling company?

Make sure you read the research about what happens to investors when they switch funds after a losing streak. Its not Berkowitz's "losing streak" I'm worried about; he's had plenty of those in the past. My worry is that the guy running the Fairholme Fund now isn't the same person as this guy from 2003: http://www.thestreet.com/story/10086411/1/fairholmes-15-faves-from-berkshire-to-telecom.html Yeah, I want the guy who doesn't have time for outside interests, not the architect/art museum curator/male model.

Classics An Investor's Anthology, published by AIMR and Edited by Charlie Ellis. I am really enjoying it so far, but its mostly a collection of stuff that many of you will have read elsewhere. I'm also reading Titan - about John D. and Prof. Greenwald's Value Investing.

Yeah, sorry I meant close to the bottom in oil (maybe) and more specifically in the small cap E&P stocks; the ones that are down ~50%. I'm sure there will be some bankruptcy filings before the dust settles. I'm keeping an eye out for some PE activity in the sector, but I'm probably not going to do anything about it. You are of course right there are seemingly a lot of risks out there and the only markets that seem to maybe have discounted those are outside of North America.
