  1. I find it patronizing and overly simplistic to dismiss the result as merely a symbol of populism and revolt against the political elites. I don't think the Europeon nation states want to be one federalist nation. Anytime a little stress is placed on the system (financial or otherwise) this manifests itself. I think Buffett and many others have been predicting that the EU in current form is unlikely to survive indefinitely and this is perhaps the best way to take a first step in that direction (as opposed to a country which uses the EU leaving under financial duress).
  2. Everything on my watchlist looks pretty orderly. Nothing even close to February lows. Ditto.
  3. Watching BBC one stream online. Love the accents. They have a guy on a graphic of downing street and lines representing the votes are going to come in. The graphics are uh....amusing.
  4. Seems like I remember in the 80's all this skepticism about causes of smog and whether car emissions would/could be controlled effectively without wrecking the economy.
  5. The Commodore Vanderbilt biographies contained lots of interesting discussion about the canals and the superiority of the Nicaragua route which was preferred by the Commodore, but was basically thwarted by armed "filibusters" from the slave states in the U.S. seeking to set up a pro slavery military dictatorship in Nicaragua.
  6. I really just think they've held on longer than the Soviets, because they were more willing to massacre their people. I mean if Gorbachev was willing to pull Tiananmen Square, is there any doubt that Putin would be happy to wear red? Clearly Taiwan and Hong Kong have unleashed human potential much more efficiently and on a far greater scale. That will probably register eventually.
  7. Feel like Taiwan and Hong Kong should be exhibits a1 and a2 in your analysis...
  8. On my to read list. Liked his presentation at Ivy on youtube, especially his humility regarding forecasting and the conclusions he put forward (he is, after all, largely drawing upon a sample size of 3; if I understood his presentation).
  9. For the buying if to crash: LRE.L DEO UL AGK.l
  10. Nice. I've got a limit order in for some IEUR (with a large portion of the index is devoted to the UK ~ 30%) at Fido, where that is a NTF option and will be looking for dislocations real time.
  11. The oil bugs all stepped out for a drink after yesterday's action.
  12. I dunno. I sort of liked Snowball more just for the detail but recently re-watched a talk Alice gave at UVA and she said some seemingly off stuff like Charlie Munger is "purely a social friend of Warren's", when asked about his role at BRK. It also seems like WEB has sort of cut her off; didn't see her book listed on the annual meeting handout this year for example and her book sort of makes some pretty big psychological analysis type leaps, especially for a former insurance analyst. Basically, seems perhaps a little too opinionated for a biographer. Lowenstein has been around a long time so he's probably got more depth of knowledge about the man.
  13. I enjoyed that. Seems like he's trying to continue to learn and improve by refocusing on some quality.
  14. ok, ok. I missed the dividend one.
  15. Personally, the selected sample period of 1/3/2010 to date is not one which I would expect to reflect well on skilled value managers with a good process.
  16. Is that the cost basis for the original Heinz investment? Wow.
  17. I assimilate information like Keanu Reaves, whether as NEO or Johnny Pneumonic (weird type casting there, eh?).
  18. Nah. Boomers gotta' get some money for their alpo. Maybe its a detroit thing. Do you guys have power and water?

  20. Right. I was just curious what type of chairs people use, etc. The zero gravity programmer chair would be an option that would achieve that but it would be kind of ridiculous. Maybe a larger beer belly to prop materials up higher? ;D
  21. Do any of you without Bloomberg terminals subscribe to Valueline or Gurufocus or Morningstar?
  22. Probably just like the real election. What, Romney got blown out? But Fox News and my uncle said...
