Really? Earnings volatility is sky-high with these names. Seems like a TON of risk to be willing to give up liquidity... That's why they're cheap? Commodities are down at the moment. The companies are great and commodities will rebound at some point. Do you think these won't be good investments on the 10 year time horizon of this thread? Why Spectra Energy? What price would you own it at? Well run company which basically acts as a toll road. I own it (at higher prices than today's), I followed the guidelines of the OP, not the title (what companies would you take if you needed to keep them for 10 years at today's prices).

Rand Paul is out he had zero chance anyway. I guess as long as it's not Clinton or Sanders.

I was a great investor for the 5 years 1995-2000. Haha touche

Source? I'd say there's a reasonable argument that 2008 was a contradictory indicator depending on your interpretation of events. What you want to draw cocnclusions based on 1 year? That's how we got stuck with this Kenyesian crap to start with more than a century ago (yes yes before Keynes theories). My source is market data in the US between 1800 and 1904 when there actually was a free market (not 2008 wtf). There weren't any bubbles in a sense whe have them now because the market was allowed to correct and politics did not interfere with the economy. The currenvy used was also not debt but commodity based. The whole big crash in the 30s (including the ramp up in the 20 years before)? Keynesianism showing its ugly head.

The only Libertarian candidate: Rand Paul. Free markets are good for the market.

Maybe the man and women with a 130+ IQ do something more useful than investing (building his own business, research, cure cancer) and invest in index funds ;) Why? Better returns on investing if you have sufficient funds (relative to time invested).
-
Can valuation time indexing too. I guess. My point was if you are unsure if you can beat the market but unsure if you want to index, why not make the S&P 500 50% of your portfolio (or more or less)? If you only find one investment every one or two years, maybe the right answer is 80% index and 20% 2 or 3 names. IDK, just something to consider. I think many people do something like this. Although the company they invest in outside of an index is usually the company they work for (irrespective of price).

Do you think Bitcoin is a safe store of value?
wachtwoord replied to mikazo's topic in General Discussion
Come on I expected better of you. The biggest retard "on the development team" (hardly lol, he made a few small commits over the years) gets his panties in a bunch because people are not listening to hist stupid suggestions and makes a blog post. Complete non-event. For the record, here is a point by point rebuttal: https://fixingtao.com/2016/01/point-by-point-response-to-mike-hearns-final-bitcoin-post/ Don't expect too much of me about Bitcoin. I just vaguely keep track of what's going on, and I thought a negative article by an insider was interesting. Thanks for posting the rebuttal, I'll have a look. Mainstream media are clueless about Bitcoin. They only post negative "news", so I was disappointed this was posted on this high quality forum by a frequent contributor. Anyway, what Mike Hearn wants to do (increase the block size) is what most people in Bitcoin want. The core development team and the vast majority of economic ownership (people actually owning the Bitcoins) want the opposite for very good reasons. Therefore there is a big war going on with many many posts trying to convince/force the others to increase the block size. Doing so would greatly damage Bitcoin however. Here is a good post on why a hard fork must be fought: http://bitledger.info/why-a-hard-fork-should-be-fought-and-its-not-evil-to-discuss/ -

Rand Paul please.

Crypto is an alternative to all of them.

Thoughts on dividends -- do you care or not?
wachtwoord replied to Nelson's topic in General Discussion
I dont pay dividend taxes so it really depends on whether the company can redeploy the cash at a better ROI then me. This depends on the company but often the answer is no so I generally prefer dividends. An example of the opposite is Altius Minerals. -
-20% worst year yet for me.

More Altius Minerals
-
You gonna buy world peace index? But war is so much more profitable! Hahaha ;)
-
PDER @ $150.

Not really "my idea" but Altius Minerals. Not specifically for 2016 by they way as I don't see a catalyst (other than the under valuation). It seems like a good time to pick up some nice depressed assets for people that no the sector very well.

I couldnt agree more. I remember having discussion with Parsad when I wanted to join here about having to pay to join. Glad I did :)

At least its a lot more tax efficient, but on the other hand the 500 original companies of the S&P500 outperformed the index (and when you equal weight at the start even more). So maybe its a good idea to build an index yourself with >100 companies. It shouldn`t be too hard to exclude the crappy businesses. On the other hand you are back to active investing then. Maybe do it like Buffet and make buy once sell never decisions, that should be even better. My goals for 2016 are 1) hold my weight 2) make more friends 3) stop trading options, OTC, microcaps and illiquid stocks and stop making stupid short term trades. (the last one was already on last years list, if someone has an idea to force myself to not do it, its welcome.) The only thing I can think of is explicitly restricting yourself. Ban yourself from selling a stock within a year. You'll think harder before you make a purchase. (of course artificial restrictions like this also have a price, but it's probably quite minor).

Why humans follow leaders who have no character?

Good speech by Ben Sasse on the topic I saw yesterday: -
Why humans follow leaders who have no character?

Because they get things done which outweigh the negative traits. -
Do you hedge currency exposure for foreign stocks?
wachtwoord replied to matjone's topic in General Discussion
If it's a multinational it depends how much of its revenue and costs it makes in the different currencies NOT what currency the ticker happens to be trading in. Having said that, I dont hedge. First off I dont insure costs I can bear as it will cost money. Second, you're quite dependant and tied to the nation and currency you earn your income in and have your home. It's nice to diversify away from that. -
A lot of ATUSF on Friday too.

Only 1 blockchain right now is any good. Dont let the banks convince you on their private BCs. Without the decentralized nature a blockchain is just a bloated way to store transaction data.
