  1. A practical example of this i think it's weed in Amsterdam. The prices at the "coffee shops" are significantly higher than what one would pay at a dealer. I disagree. Amsterdam is not a truly representative sample to select. Amsterdam has, for decades, been an oasis for "legal" drug usage within Europe and the Western world. This has skewed the underlying economics, as it is has become less about the actual drug use and more about the tourism component. For a better example, take a look at Colorado to see the effect marijuana legalization has had. Surplus state government budget (they tax weed sales). Reduced crime. Controlled usage. Price and product transparency throughout the industry. I am moving from NYC to DEN...it is night and day. Here in NYC I would need to "know somebody" to buy marijuana. Which usually involves either buying it from friends if I'm lucky, or having some random dude show up to my apartment. And I have no idea what I'm really buying. In Denver, I go to a dispensary. It's clean, controlled, and well-serviced. They check my ID before they let me inside. Cameras monitor the entire store. They employee good people, pay taxes, and run a legitimate business. They list the product details, THC % levels, etc. In Denver there are no more street dealers for weed. None. There is zero demand for their services. I say, fuck it, legalize it nationwide and start legalizing other drugs too. Anyone who thinks people aren't doing drugs because they're illegal is an idiot and knows nothing about human nature. That's half the reason doing drugs is "cool"!
  2. financials, autos (?), auto dealerships (?), retailers (?), perhaps some energy cos (?) that are cheap All industries experiencing a bit of upheaval, no? Cheap for a reason?
  3. My uncle sent me a link to this website, to "listen and read up with an open mind" (this is the same guy who pitched the Iraqi dinar a few years back, for context) http://www.simtradepro.com/ I was immediately skeptical (well just at the name of the website) and then when I found this video linked on there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Qp_GW2nGQg For a joke, start watching at the 4:20 minute mark in that video. I couldn't roll my eyes hard enough. "we just sit back and let the software do what it does....give me the money!"
  4. Or cVaR/expected shortfall
  5. I agree. I think the common theme is "If it sounds too good to be true..."
  6. convert it to a word doc, highlight all, choose whatever font u want. might screw up the tables, though
  7. Happy birthday America and Sanjeev!
  8. Nah, just buy IFF. they probably supply the orange juice flavor.
  9. Well, all those people wanting to cut back on the 2nd Amendment rights & gun control probably have not had the experience of a home invasion, thefts of vehicles, etc. They probably also have not had to deal with AGGRESSIVELY incompetent police too! I wonder what the response of gun control people would be if they knew the police won't do anything? When they learn they aren't even INTERESTED in doing anything! I guess in their fantasy "la-la land" people don't have the right to protect themselves & their property when society & police start falling apart. I just hope things don't get worse. I & my father lived in Detroit in the 70's & 80's. I've seen REALLY bad times, I hope they don't come back... The USA is a diverse place. Here is NYC...it is as safe and well policed as I've seen it in the last 30 years. Pretty incredible how far it's come from the 70s. In my opinion guns would cause more harm than good here. In Spokane Washington? I have the total opposite view.
  10. Remember, friends always share 8)
  11. FCAU, WPP, BAC
  12. Holy crap are you serious? How is the government not involved? This is ridiculous that people can just casually get their hands on this stuff. You don't need to be a chemist to understand the dangers involved. This is literally proof that our government is simply incapable of providing real solutions to basic, common problems. I swear to god this makes me want to vote Trump even more.
  13. Two windmills are standing in a field and one asks the other, "What kind of music do you like?" The other replies, "I'm a big metal fan"
  14. This is why PE alone is not an indicator of over- or under- valued. in this case, buying @ 20x would've been a great investment. i am sick of hearing, it trades at 20x earnings therefore its overvalued.
  15. I'm all for uncovering the shadier side of Berkshire, but can anyone explain the following to me: Did they have a gun to this business's head? Why just, you know, not buy the shitty policy?
  16. Just an incredible athlete and human. Not to say he was perfect but admirable in many aspects. What a competitor, and entertainer! A rare breed that could do both!
  17. Hasn't anyone seen Zorba the Greek?
  18. The problem is a lot of people don't have to discipline to, say, eat 2000 calories of cake and cola and then call it quits for the day. Those foods are usually low-fiber, low-satiety, addictive (taste wise), and provide an insulin spike followed by a crash...these factors strongly encourage over-consumption.
  19. Thanks for the heads up. Where do you get market prices for these sorts of things? I have a few comics and tons of basketball cards I would love to turn into capital :)
  20. Brings up a good point: the quality of journalism is on a constant decline. I spoke with an ex-Sequioa analyst about 8 months ago. He said, "do you know who sequoia hires (as analysts)? journalists." And i'm sure it's not just them. So with some exceptions perhaps, the brightest guys in that market are getting snatched up by funds, and the public readership is left with the rest.
  21. Hey Scott, anything new going on in your life? Post some of whats been going thru your head recently. :)
  22. What? His net worth is 10+ Billion. Not gifted enough in business or economics?
  23. I thought that the U.S. VP had one job. To be there in case the President kicks the bucket. To have a ticket with a 70 year old candidate and a 74 year old vp seems a little non sensical. no? When the president eats the souls of children, why do we even need a VP?
  24. Isn't Bernie polling better vs Trump than Hillary? I'll probably vote third party again, but if I had to vote for one of the remaining main party candidates it'd probably be Bernie. I've always been right-leaning/independent, but the dude is one of the few politicians I've seen with integrity and I generally like the guy even if I disagree with his math/economics/entitlement stances. A Republican Congress would prevent him from doing much of the economic damage that I'm concerned he might do and I'd rather stand up for a politician who is trustworthy and has integrity than any of these other liars who might have better plans, but can't be trusted to actually follow through with anything they say. The problem with this election is that Trump is a caricature of the Republican party and Hillary seems increasingly likely to be a criminal. How did it come to this where we have to choose between a cartoon character and criminal for the highest office in the country? My thought exactly. Last I heard Sanders polls better vs. Trump than Hillary, but it looks like he won't get the nomination.
