  1. I believe Eric Sprott has said much the same thing for many years.....thanks for posting cheers Zorro
  2. Yes, yes, oh please yes! I have said for several years that this should be the next move..... cheers Zorro
  3. Sorry if this has already been posted, but it seems like a good move for CHK shareholders.... http://www.chk.com/News/Articles/Pages/1518894.aspx cheers Zorro
  4. Given the depressing nature of this thread - and I have to admit to being in the bearish camp - how many are hedging for a correction? And how? I am open to ideas as I have been less than successful in calling the direction of the market and my hedging efforts todate have dragged down my performace somewhat.... thanks Zorro :-[
  5. what about shorting the VIX and going long VXZ? If the market rises, you make money on the short but lose some being long the VXZ. However if the market falls, you lose on the short but recover some being long the VXZ? You adjust the ratio depending on your outlook...... cheers Zorro
  6. thanks for posting - always an interesting read! cheers Zorro
  7. Looks like a new acquistion by Prem...... http://www.fairfax.ca/Assets/Downloads/Press/fpr2011-01-14.pdf cheers Zorro
  8. Myth, Pickens is pushing for long-haul trucks to convert first. If that happens you may see a changeover begin as the infrastructure is slowly put in place. It makes sense from a balance of payment & security of supply point of view as well but it would be expensive and time consuming to convert cars.... cheers Zorro
  9. I'll throw in my $0.02...... It may be true that most companies provide very little in the way of information outside that which is legally required and I agree that it would be a waste of everyone's time to be calling every time the share price moved $5. However when you tell me that you consider me a partner in the business, and when I have been a shareholder for an extended period, the very least you can do is return my call - even if it is to say "We can't really disclose that outside normal channels due to SEC regulations" or something. So I totally understand what Partner means and i do agree with him. If I am a partner treat me like one, otherwise you are just mouthing the words not walking the walk (hows that for mixing metaphors?). IMHO this is one of the many things that will help separate great companies from the average. And for the record I have been a FFH shareholder and supporter of Prem et al for many years longer than Partner..... cheers Zorro
  10. Actually it was briefly discussed on another thread. FFh & ross actually sold at $7.35 not $8.15....interesting to note that with the flooding in Australia and higher coal prices in the spot market ICO is now about $8.40. Interesting to see how this plays out as BTU keeps talking about a coal super-cycle and shortages. cheers Zorro
  11. Best wishes for a healthy & prosperous 2011! cheers Zorro
  12. I am going to say it before Sanj does! If you buy well managed companies for less than they are worth you will do fine, take Packer for example, still finding inexpensive stocks. Now if only someone would play nice and share..... ;D cheers Zorro
  13. Scorpion, Why do you think it is irrational to use both approaches? To take your statement to the ultimate, I should only hold one stock - the one I think will give me the highest return. However, I hold more than one stock because I might be wrong. I don't think of that as irrational, rather I think that is prudent. Not being confrontational but interested in your reasoning..... cheers Zorro
  14. Myth, for now why not go 1/3 value, 1/3 buy-hold and 1/3 cash? Or simply divide the portfolio between the two and hedge against the downside. I don't think there is any one right answer, you have to do what you feel comfortable with. I do agree on the fools rally though, might be time to increase hedges..... cheers Zorro
  15. I would have to agree, it has been another good year from FFH ;D cheers Zorro
  16. I think of gold as insurance rather than an investment or speculation. Bronco nailed it - gold will continue to rise as long as the dollar falls. The dollar will fall until congress figures out how tro deal with the whole deficit/debt/taxes/entitlement issue. If you have the conviction that Congress will deal with the problem - and quickly - stay away from gold. If you think there will be ten more years of trillion dollar deficits then gold looks to do okay. Embry & Sprott have done fairly well the past ten years with gold. cheers Zorro
  17. If the US GDP is $14 trillion and represents about 40% of the global economy then I would guess $35 trillion. But thats just a WAG..... cheers Zorro
  18. For those of you more familiar with SEC regulations my question is can an investment bank be used to build a stake in a company, in order to avoid having to file when you have a 5% or greater position. For example JP Morgan bought the shares of ICO from Fairfax and Ross at $7.35. Now these shares could be sold into the market slowly as prices rise but could a company like MEE use JPM to build a larger stake on the cheap before announcing a takeover? JPM could have bought a larger stake - as volume was quite large - and then turn around and sell it to MEE. JPM pockets a nice profit and MEE builds a larger stake in ICO at a price less then the ultimate takeover price. Now I am not saying that this is happening but the recent activity and rumours with MEE & ICO got me to thinking about takeovers in general and wondering if this was possible, if it is used much etc...... cheers Zorro

  20. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a wonderful and a prosperous 2011! cheers Zorro
  21. This may explain why they are selling part of their holdings in ICO. Thanks for posting this! cheers Zorro
  22. My hope is that all of this only strengthens FFH's lawsuit. Lets see $6 billion divided by...... ;D cheers Zorro
  23. Not to forget, most of the munis are insured by BRK. This will likely help with the ratings as well. cheers Zorro
  24. I don't think this situation (i.e. global reserve currency going into hyper-inflation) has ever occurred before. The British pound was the global reserve currency prior to the US. However they didn't experience hyper-inflation. Nor has the global economy been as inter-connected as it is today..... cheers Zorro
