  1. I smell the same thing you have two markets in an up trend right now the DOW and the  Japanese stock market. What they are proposing as economic policy in Japan can best be described as a play from the Thelma and Louise playbook. If I was in Japan right now I would sell anything that had a bid and put my money in Gold bullion and ship it out of the country. I think Kyle Bass has got it right and the powers to be know it or they soon will. What happened in the Japanese bond market over night may have ruined someone big.

  2. valueInv - come to Toronto next week and we will be glad to fill you in.  Recognize that this board is much like the Matrix in that this is the third revision to the code :)  Previous versions were Stockhouse.ca, then the Microsoft blog, and now a third rebirth with an undisclosed server.

    LOL!  Is Prem "Neo"?  Cheers!

No but it was suggested by some that Stevie was a Sith Lord.  LOLOL
  3. Regarding the thread title - there's a pretty big big disconnect in the rise and fall of the stock price compared to the actual company.

Yes, I'm not sure why it said Apple, when it was really about Andy Zaky.  I've changed the title to the same as the article and link.  Cheers!

Who has heard of Andy Zacky vs who has heard of AAPLE. Inter net marketing 101 if you want clicks use chicks, sex sells. Sorry if the title was misleading
  4. Call me a skeptic, but this Cyprus stuff seems to be a red herring.  Why has the Russian government introduced itself into the conversation?  Maybe this has less to do about the banking system and has more to do with the Russian underworld.  Just a thought.

    Cheers

    JEast

The question is then, why is Russia protecting it's tax evaders?  The answer might be, the tax evaders are powerful.

I noticed somewhere that Russia gave Cyprus a loan and that Cyprus is neededing another loan from Russia after the so called deposit clawback.

The deposits are Russian and they are dirty. The depositer bail in just failed the Plan B being planned is giving the Russian Mob the keys to the bank be afraid be very very afraid. The damage a true BANKSTER can do to an economy is breath taking.
  5. They made a terrible mistake. Genie is now out of the bottle regarding confiscation of assets. Something that people other than gold bugs have never thought about before or even possible is now contemplated as a real practical solution by politicians. Markets around the world are now coming down. S&P futures are down 1.1%.

1.1% happens once every week!  I remember when markets were down 8% on consecutive days...now that's a shitstorm.

Cyprus is the canary in a very small coalmine...investors should get concerned when Italy or Japan contemplate doing the same thing.  Cheers!

That is exactly what is going to spook the mkts.  What they have done to Cypriot depositors is going to change behaviour.. No thinking PIGGS depositor is going to sit still.
  6. Since this thread has turned into a Q&A with Eric (which I really appreciate, btw! :) ), here's my question for Eric:

What would you estimate your record would have been without the use of leverage?

The same as Redskin212...over 18% compounded annually!  He sent me his results after he looked at Eric's, and it was like he was a chronic underachiever.  He's in the top 0.001% of investors and he feels like he underachieved!

Eric, I think every guy on here thinks their d**k is a hell of alot shorter than yours today!  ;D  Time to buy a corvette!  Cheers!

Mine has shrunk to peanut size since reading this thread.  LOL Congrats Eric I bought exactly the same things at the same time but never with your conviction
  7. if you study the past relationships between;  ichan, ackman, einhorn, chanos, stienhardt, milken, boesky, peretz, loeb, cohen and many other network associates ... it sure becomes hard for me to believe all this public infighting is for real.

and that's a great question,  is it for real?

the oldest games within this network are bear raiding, pipes and stock parking. if you take a step back from all the media attention and realize that ackmans 8-9 month short sale which would appear to be in the money, is the main reason affording ichan the opportunity to buy up to 25% of the stock at significant discounts and get 2 board seats ... it all seems a little strange? all this fighting but both are probably in the money right now.

i silently wonder if all these clowns won't find themselves huddled around a hamptons fire pit reliving old stories one day.

BINGO Anything is possible with these guys would rather not be involved with any of them if I can help it but its pretty hard to avoid them in the world of finance.
  8. I have no dog in this fight and I am more than willing to sit it out. My thoughts are that unless Carl can orchestrate a squeeze he loses. My guess is that this is a pyramid scheme which will eventualy fail so Carl can only make money if he can force the Ackman to buy his position. IF Carl ends up holding his position he loses because he is trapped in a losing investment unless but Carl is wily and has very deep pockets.

  9. If the mkt decides to decline in a meaningful way FFH will more than outperform by not declining as much it should in fact increase in value. If the mkt can hold at these levels the 1st quarter numbers will be VERY good they have generated the most alpha since the time of the cds positions so far this year.

  10.

The news was first reported by CNBC's David Faber.

I watch CNBC every morning ,MR Faber seems all to willing to put out information which is false, incorrect ,misleading to curry favour with his sources. I think I have watched him ask the question about Ackmans investors deserting him in reference to the Herbal Life story which is just parrotting Icahns line, about 5 times in the past few weeks.

  11. I used to own a lot of stock in the Spectra Group that owned the Canadian rights to the Macaroni Grill. I like the food biz its made me a fair bit of dough over the years. I think someone should take over Memphis Blues and roll out the concept Nationaly insanely good food and great concept would work pretty much anywear in North America. Who would think an Asian guy in Vancouver could absolutely kill with a southern barbecue concept.

  12. I have managed  to generate an annual return in the mid teens for the last 15 years. I have implemented a value approach because it made sense. One of the reasons my returns have been mkt beating is because when the margin of safety declined to level that approached zero I sold or alternatively the holdings I had were subject to a take-over and no bargains were available. MR mkt is now offering us values on average more than double were they where 5 years ago. The preponderance of fat pitches are on the sell side not the buy side right now.

  13. There used to be a Macaroni Grill in the old rogers mansion on Davie street. I ate there more than once it was a wonderfull location they used to hire opera majors from UBC as waiters and they would sing on demand, decent food great concept. With the right operator it could make some serious coin perhaps you could get the guy who was just fired from the Olive Garden to run it he certainly knows this slice of the food biz.

  14. Moore glad that you are back tho I guess you never really went away. I promised myself that I would buy some gold if MR Bernanke did a QE3 which he did and so I guess my cash is really at 35% as I have a 5% gold position which I really look as an alternative currency or cash. Its scary how we think alike at this site even tho we bicker over the wisdom of positions like cats and dogs. LOL

  15. Japan has become the world champion at marathon can kicking I suspect that the race is soon to come to an end as suggested by Mr Bass.

What if they kick it farther a 100 years down the road and in the meatime society changes enough to accept immigration? The fact there's so much wrong with this country also means it's easier (in theory) to fix.  Let hoards of willing, hard working immigrants in, let them raise productivity and carry the burden of the pensions.  (this seems to be Plan F in Japan, current Plan A is Robot Overlords, at least according to various anime movies.)

I also think there's a bit of a difference between this and 2007, in what led to 2007 many of those in power did not realize what's actually going on, while in Japan these days they are consciously kicking the can.

It takes a crises to change a culture. Japanese citizens have been very docile for a very long time. They are not going to change until such time as change is forced upon them. One only has to look at what happened with Olympic camera to see how difficult it is to make a meaningful change in Japan.
