What you are missing is rather simple: the man had a gun and he resisted Law Enforcement's efforts to surrender. He was a danger to officers and got himself shot by fighting with law enforcement. Really simple stuff. If you would rather believe @Castanza and his magic tricks - no problem.

I'm truly sorry for the parents. To think your son would go to a protest ARMED to the teeth and then disobey law enforcement when they are clearly telling you to stay out of the situation. Then ACTIVELY fight with them instead of putting your hands behind your back. And now he got himself killed. So tragic. So reckless.

The man approached law enforcement with a gun. He was hostile. He did not comply. No need to split hairs. He put EVERYONE in a very, very dangerous situation.

It's a terrible awful tragedy. What in the world would possess him to take a gun, approach law enforcement, and then NOT comply to put his hands behind his back and actively resist law enforcement. IF you are law enforcement - and someone approaches you with a gun that is hostile to your efforts- you are in a very very dangerous situation.
