  2. man, i need to look harder and broaden my circle

Ha!  If there were another 50 companies that met my criteria I'd buy them too.  It's becoming more of a capital problem than an idea problem.

  4. here is my:

    36% CASH

    25% BAC (common, options, warrants)

14% GM (mostly B warrant and some common)

    8% HHC

    6% AIG

    4% C

    2% MSFT

    2% BRK

    4% OTHER

Both BAC and GM are levered through warrants and options, so notional value would be a lot more.

EDIT: I recently (in the last month or 2) sold out of GGP and DFS (that is where a lot of cash was from)

  5. Cardboard,

    buyings CALLS! wow hmmm....

are you saying swaping out common position gradually as market goes up and replace the common with calls? this way you will take some money off the table and by utilizing calls you can get the same amount of exposure as before (with the common) but at a fraction the cost.

in the even market dives you lose on your call, which is finite?

    is this what you mean?

  6. i think this discussion is interesting, but if you follow it you would have been out of the market since early 1990's

we all already get a since of the valuation by how easy/hard it is to find ways to put to work our money

its definitely interesting and as a sanity check

still looking for great investments, anyone got any GREAT ideas? i can find a bunch of reasonable ideas :(

  7. be careful

it looks like he has swap GM common for GM warrants

which is something that i done a little while ago

GM'B warrant is a long long term option, it a better way to leverage your GM shares, most of my GM investment are in warrants

EDIT: GM is pabari's second largest holding by value

Pabrai raising cash as well?  He sold GM last quarter.

  8. folks forgive my ignorance, i was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this topic, in regards to "market cap vs nominal gdp" ratio

i am puzzle on why we don't adjust the nominal gdp part to consider for globalization? does anyone have this info?

as we know market cap is how much a companies worth given by the market, a company like KO which makes half of its profit overseas (i think that is the number) naturally would have a large market cap than a KO that doesn't make that part of the profit overseas. however in this scenario the GDP would not be affected in the calculation.

am i missing something? please forgive my ignorance

EDIT: i am not argueing that market is high or low, just like to have more accurate data. if you look at this ratio over time (http://www.cornerofberkshireandfairfax.ca/forum/general-discussion/i-worry-about-the-shot-heard-around-the-world/?action=dlattach;attach=1738) it seem like its trending up for decades, how do you explain that? does that mean we have some sort of overvaluation that have a cycle of centuries or multi centuries? please forgive my igorance.

base on the chart we have been overvalue since early 1990's (except for 2008/2009). obviously i have no been investing for that long, i guess this entire thing make be pause a little.

also i wonder, what about before 1920's what does the data look like way back. i would beat the ratio is even lower in the past? obviously this is just a hunch.

  9. the market cap vs gdp and corp profit vs gdp

    are all somewhat related

how do we adjust these number base on globalization?

imagine a world were  US GDP collapses (imagine a world were US has become rome, just a thought experiment) and US company make MOST of its profit outside of US. this is an extreme example to illustrate we need to take globalization into account in the data, anyone have any data on this?

    Market Cap vs GDP

    The Infinite Compounding Fallacy

    ---

<snip>.... Over the last 30 years, the total stock market capitalization has grown at approximately 9% per year, while GDP has grown at approximately 5% per year.  When these assumptions are extended out to 2025, the infinite compounding fallacy becomes quite clear.  in order to maintain the historical rates of appreciation that are used in almost every financial planning model, the stock market will need to be $17.4 Trillion dollars larger than US Gross Domestic Product by the year 2025. ....</snip>

  10. the metric warren use % of profit vs GDP i do think need to be adjusted for a global economy

now by how much i have no idea

it simple common sense, many US corp's profit are from outside of the US. to compare present vs the past % of profit to GDP, we will prob need to take into account the portion of GDP outside of US into the equation

again by how much i don't know, anyone have come across anything regarding this.

i understand people are concern. % of profit vs GDP is definitely one of the talking points, even warren and charles has eluded to the need to consider gdp outside of US.

  11. but i have to say personally,  i tend to buy early (when its going down) and sell early (when its going up)

trying to adjust this, wait longer than i usually would, re calibrate my internal gauge (I could just be fooling myself)

    hope it works

also selling is no fun, the massive tax hit, not fun at all (even with long term cap gain, after you add federal plus state etc)

    i am 40% cash

  12. my entire point is, all the talk about ALL TIME highs (on CNBC etc), with inflation adjusted we are not at all time highs, that is all. also  it also shows that stocks overall have not gone anywhere for over 10 years for some perspective.

    i understand parsad's point

actually for some perspective (for myself as well)

After inflation the S&P 500 is 22.4% below its March 2000 high.

and what relevance does the march 2000 high have to where stocks are today?
