Your board software has an RSS feed which I've been using. Does the software have an option for "full feed" and "partial feed" or "headline only"? I hope that it's not too much to ask, but it would be great for some of us if you could turn on the full feed. Hopefully you're tracking upstream bandwidth and can establish a baseline before turning this feature on. If it turns into an additional operational expense, that's not intended. RSS feed readers (e.g. Google Reader) provide a great way to speed through the postings, especially if the full feed is available. Then one can pick and choose the items to respond to. Usually the user hits refresh and it will automatically update grabbing the most recent posts. The reason someone would want an RSS feed to the forum, rather than visiting the forum daily, is that they have services like Google Reader which allows you to add a bunch of different RSS feeds and keep track of them in once place. So potentially, a user could be receiving new posts here (forum RSS feed), alongside new stories at the wall street journal (WSJ RSS feed), and 10-Ks from the SEC (SEC RSS feed) Check out an example feed - use the following in the address bar of your browser: feed://dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com/feed/ Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

After you are logged in... you can then click "Add Subscription" in the top left of the page http://www.google.com/reader ....In the small popup box that appears just type in cornerofberkshireandfairfax.ca --- this will add the RSS feed to your Google Reader account. However, you will notice that it only lets you read the first couple of lines of each post. To read the whole post it forces you to go back to the cornerofberkshireandfairfax.ca/forum website. nodnub Posted February 19, 2009 Share Posted February 19, 2009 Sanjeev, I am not an expert on this either: but I found some information http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=291694.0 that suggests that publishing the full feed COULD put more processing load on the server. I don't think this will be a problem as this is a relatively small community of readers on this board (less than 2000 if I recall correctly). For comparison, some forums would likely have 10 or 20 times as many users. Furthermore, I bet a lot of us will continue to access the forum via the website so that we can use other useful features such as the "Show unread posts since last visit" link at the top. There is some more information about the forum software's RSS settings here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=25009.0 I believe this setting should only control the max length of each post published in the RSS feed. It should be safe to experiment with different values. Keep in mind, if your RSS feed reader caches the content you may need to click refresh to notice the changes to the post length. I don't think it should cause much of a problem, though I don't know the details of your hosting provider (in terms of what hardware this board is running on). I'm really excited to have a full feed available! Though the bboard interface is significantly better than the old one, and so it doesn't seem too bad to me. Parsad Posted January 7, 2013 Share Posted January 7, 2013 I've been notified by a board member that our RSS Feed is no longer showing the authors of posts in Google RSS Feed Reader. I've looked high and low, as well as all over the Simple Machines software, on how to change the settings, but there is no setting that needs adjustment. Not sure how useful this is, but if I go all the way to when I first subscribed in 2009 there are authors. I have scrolled back to Oct. 2012 so far and no authors.
