indythinker85 Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Does anyone get Klarman's investments in these small bio-tech companies? http://www.valuewalk.com/2013/11/baupost-group-idix/
AchilliesValue Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 These are all outside my circle of competence and I would speculate are for most of us. But you gotta remember one of the unique things about Baupost vs other very successful value investors is that he has a huge staff. 180+ employees as of the last article I've seen about it. So they have a deeper pool of specialists than most of the funds we typically look at. Being in Boston also probably has its advantages. There is a huge biotech industry, bunch of very good medical schools, plus nearly every I-Bank / Consulting group's top healthcare people are based in Boston. Id wager they have a few very smart MDs working there.
muscleman Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I looked at IDIX and other drug pharms for a while but could not understand anything, even though I have a degree in biology. :(
CorpRaider Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I looked at it when the most recent FDA hold was placed, but didn't open a position. To me, the investment in THRX is much easier to wrap your brain around. I mean you have a recent valuation on the license revenue stream from the elan bid. I made some decent cake in Chiron in a similar situation years ago (with a major pharma holding a controlling/large interest in a smaller biopharma) so I may be feeling nostalgic.

Its outside my circle but was just curious, I dont plan to buy the company. Interesting earlier post about Boston and medicine i was thinking along those lines. I did not realize Baupost has 180 employees thought it was closer to 100.
