matjone Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Can any members of the board recommend any small funds to check out? These kinds of funds don't get in the press too much, so I am thinking a little scuttlebutt might be the way to find them. Here's my criteria: 1. History of outperformance. A really long history of outperformance is nice, but usually it means a larger asset base, so I'm willing to have some leeway in this area. I'm not into hard and fast quantitative rules so I am just going to say that I'd like to see a manager with some history of beating the market, enough that you have confidence in them. 2. Value philosophy. Whether that means he/she likes cigar butts, moat companies, spinoffs, or whatever other styles there are I don't care. But no momentum, technical analysis, etc. 3. Managers have to have their own money in the fund. 4. Manager uses little or preferably no leverage 5. Bonus if they are open to small retail investors. This isn't a deal breaker though, I can still gain knowledge from looking through their filings and letters. 6. Size. Again, I don't have a strict rule, but the smaller the better. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Ross812 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Jeffery Uben of Value Act. Not really a small fund, but a great manager flying under the radar.

Sorry, I don't know. They're just funds that I've chatted with about various investments in the past and I have found to be decent sources for ideas.
