Kraven Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Walter Schloss passes at 95. He was one of my investing heroes and will be truly missed. RIP Walter. http://mobile.bloomberg.com/news/2012-02-20/walter-schloss-superinvestor-who-earned-buffett-s-praise-dies-at-95.html
Guest Hester Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 He was one of the most underrated investing legends.
augustabound Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Our value investing world lost one of the best.
Ballinvarosig Investors Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 I had the pleasure of meeting Walter; even though he didn't know me from Adam, he put up with me speaking to him for nearly an hour. All that time he was incredible warm, patient and humble, and despite his years, was still very lucid. A real gentleman, and a huge loss for all.

I wrote him a letter, he replied! Amazing to think what a little flattery can do.

Guest ValueCarl Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Another great "Walter" has died today. I remember him helping me sniff around DOW CHEMICAL some years back. Although waiting until $8.00 pps was the best course of action which I applied during the wake of the crisis, compared to the high teens when I recall him writing about, I will not forget the prudence learned from reading the thinking processes behind this revered VALUE INVESTOR! :( http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=DOW&t=5y&l=on&z=l&q=l&c=

Walter will be alive forever in light of his principles used to find value.
Guest ValueCarl Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Ben Graham, you bring joy to my heart with your kind words honoring this once great beacon of value investing, Walter Schloss; knowing together as ONE that there is always LIGHT in TRUTH. The journey and task for each of us is to find VALUE by seeking TRUTH so LIGHT does ultimately SHINE on our investments.
Parsad Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 One of the truly great investors! Had a true passion for both the science and art of picking stocks. Cheers!
Kraven Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 Sadly, another of the "Buffett Group" (formerly "Graham Group"), Ed Anderson of Tweedy Browne, passed away on Feb 9. Sorry for the duplication is this was already posted.
augustabound Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Unless I missed it, which is entirely possible in my sleep deprived, newborn baby girl state, I saw no mention in the WSJ of Walter's passing. I read it most mornings online and didn't even see anything on the WSJ home page.
petey2720 Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I assume you guys have probably read this at some point, but I figured this would be a good time to post: Walter Schloss interview with Barron's in 1985 Barrons_Article_2-25-1985.pdf
augustabound Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I've seen multiple mentions of the interview he did for OID in 1989. Does anyone know if it's available anywhere? I've seen all the compilation websites that list Walter Schloss writings, interviews etc, but have not found the OID interview.

I've seen all the compilation websites that list Walter Schloss writings, interviews etc, but have not found the OID interview. It was good. I've a paper copy but no scanner. I expect that someone else will provide :D
shalab Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 A super investor by any measure over a very long time frame: During the 1956-2000 period, the fund earned a compounded annual rate of return of 15.3% (20.9% pre-fees). All with value investing the Schloss way.

When one subscribe to OID, the interviews are included in the free back issues in a spellbinder.
ageofsocrates Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 One of the greatest investors ever and his death is largely missed by the media...
