I am beginning to understand why Watsa, Buffett, Berkowitz, Klarman, et al. are so rare in the investing world. Most people seem to be hardwired to see a stock like SIRI and think, "Woo-Hoo! Lemme on that rocket ship!" I guess while most crash and burn (1990s day traders, 2000s home flippers, 2010s SIRI "investors") the aforementioned value masters just keep stacking capital on top of capital all the way to the sky! ;D ;)

If you read the various stock boards (especially Yahoo! Finance and SA) you may notice that there are a large number of traders who seem to love the stock of SiriusXM. For example: http://seekingalpha.com/article/236682-ge-takes-a-big-stake-in-sirius-xm?source=hp_latest_articles My question is...why? http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/invsub/results/statemnt.aspx?Symbol=SIRI&lstStatement=CashFlow&stmtView=Ann The stock (from a value investor's perspective) is not compelling but lots of stock watchers can't get enough of it! ???

Here is a candidate: 1) Smart asset allocator 2) Experience with investors 3) History of aquisitions The drawbacks are he is kind of obscure and only has a small amount of capital to work with: :P ::) ;D http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-11-02/apple-piggybank-earns-0-75-return-as-investors-ask-for-payback.html

Allow me to qualify what I originally meant: I'm not asking why there isn't another Buffett. I just find it hard to believe of the thousands of dying public or private businesses around the country and the thousands of insurance or asset allocation professionals in the U.S. only a few have even had a little success with this method. I'm thinking about the business development companies, SPACs and even family offices. Looks like its just another reason to celebrate Mr. Buffett and his unique talents!

Specifically, the use of net operating losses and cash flow investing from non-insurance float income. Or is the compounding engine run by Ian Cumming and Joseph Steinberg totally unique?

Sorry for bumping this old thread but here in late 2010 are there any more ideas for deep-value oriented mutual funds other than FAIRX AND WGRNX? Thanks in advance! ;D

http://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE%3APIR I kinda wish I could have gotten in during Q1 2009. Except for current BV the numbers look pretty decent. http://stocks.investopedia.com/stock-analysis/2010/Pier-1-Continues-Its-Turnaround-PIR-BBBY-WSM-CPWM-LZB0920.aspx?partner=YahooSA http://stocks.investopedia.com/stock-analysis/2010/Pier-1-Getting-Customers-Back-PIR-BBBY-HVT-TJX0921.aspx?partner=YahooSA

It sounds like Mr. Berkowitz is keen to buy the whole dang company: http://www.thestreet.com/story/10890674/1/berkowitz-to-einhorn-thank-you.html?cm_ven=GOOGLEN ;) BTW, great board...hope I can add some value while I learn!

hard to see how a company that owns a ton of land with no debt could go to zero. It's basically an exercise in land valuation. Book value is $10, and much of the half million acres of land they own is held at absurdly low book values - most of it was acquired in the 1930's and '40's
