In 2005-6 I was looking to invest in the market. I held some investment funds, but wanted more control of my investments. I was looking for a company that I could invest in for the long term as a basis on which to build a stock portfolio.

Somehow I stumbled onto Fairfax Financial and then found the predecessor of this board. I followed it closely For quite a while before I decided that this was the type of company I was looking for. I think the fact that convinced me was that Prem Watsa, CEO had a salary fixed at $600,000 per year while other CEO were being paid multi, multi millions yearly (20 years later his salary is still the same).

Mr. Watsa's wealth comes from the shares he owns in Fairfax Financial, so his objectives are closely aligned with shareholders. So I jumped in and invested, for me, a substantial sum. Share price was C$217. Since then I have added over the years and have yet to sell a share.
