FAIRHOLME FUNDS, INC. PORTFOLIO MANAGER’S REPORT 2010
EdWatchesBoxing replied to dcollon's topic in General Discussion
Went on the Sprott site last night when I couldn't sleep. He's got the record to back up his talk. That's all I have to say about that. -
50 Cent Ramps His Own Stock On Twitter
EdWatchesBoxing replied to Ballinvarosig Investors's topic in General Discussion
This is amazing news. It's nice to hear Cool J doing well in things other than music. This reminds me of the Jay-Z forbes interview that was posted a few months ago. It's weird to see the rappers I grew up with doing grown up things. -
EV is a term thrown all over in poker, gambling, etc. applying this concept to poker may make it easier to understand.

Current Bullishness - What do you all think
EdWatchesBoxing replied to Myth465's topic in General Discussion
^ this is what I think about insurance too. Have Fairfax, but hard to put too much into insurance. I like to read a lot about the field though. -
Book/Website recommendation on stock option strategies

Just buy the damn book already (from an indigo shareholder) ;) -
Oklahoma?

twacowfca, which school was this? You weren't a heavyweight were you. It would have been amusing to hear that the NCAA champ was someone like Brock Lesnar. That would have been really intimidating :P

Prem weights in on Canadian house prices
EdWatchesBoxing replied to Hoodlum's topic in Fairfax Financial
Many may be "house poor." I don't think this is just the case though. I think a lot of people in their late 20s/early thirties may have high consumption lifestyles, almost zero net worth, and/or have it tied to their house. I suspect a lot of them also use a lot of credit. Imagine what may happen if mortgage rates double when they renew in 5 yrs. Do they pay it off with their unsecured LOC? -
Prem weights in on Canadian house prices
EdWatchesBoxing replied to Hoodlum's topic in Fairfax Financial
Nice, Prem agrees with me. Sales are down, but prices haven't started their move down yet. Too many Canadians think it's different up here. They're wrong. -
Fortune Magazine article on Bruce Berkowitz
EdWatchesBoxing replied to TorontoRaptorsFan's topic in General Discussion
I read somewhere else that BB likes to keep Fairholme small to avoid bloat (probably group think as well), so he will hire people on a contract basis to help him out. It makes sense to me. Keep your company payroll small, but take advantage of expertise that will help you when you need it. -

That poodle looks like it's the alpha, lol. I wonder if it goes on the speed walks... -
Remember This Article - How Sleazy is CNBC Really?
EdWatchesBoxing replied to Parsad's topic in General Discussion
CNBC is mostly a waste of time. Buffett probably likes showing his face on CNBC because he likes Becky Quick. -
Study materials for novice investors
EdWatchesBoxing replied to matjone's topic in General Discussion
Wow, quite a few members have an engineering background. I also studied engineering (U of Toronto). I am currently going through the CFA program. The CFA is probably most valuable if you have an interest, and/or a career in finance. Take some of the other advice, like reading the Berkshire letters. The CFA is like basic strategy for what the analysts are doing. Personally, I think nothing beats hands-on experience with your own money. You'll see how you get emotional highs and lows, and you'll see how you'll deal with it. It's like a continuous feedback cycle, where you keep learning and tweaking your investment approach. -
Any other companies like Leucadia?
EdWatchesBoxing replied to BargainValueHunter's topic in General Discussion
http://tinyurl.com/3ygy8zm Yeah, at 30 yrs, it doesn't even come close. -
Shorting is always an interesting topic on this board. My only input is that if you absolutely believe in a shorting idea, consider buying puts instead of shorting. This keeps your losses finite if you are wrong. If I ever take a short position, it will be a synthetic one.

Buffett and Jay Z together in an interview
EdWatchesBoxing replied to turar's topic in Berkshire Hathaway
Jay-Z! Nice find! I have a few Jay-Z tracks on my mp3 player. I will have to finish the interview later, but I ran a search of Jay-Z videos on youtube. It takes me back a few years... -
Making 50% per year like Buffett (on small sums)
EdWatchesBoxing replied to netnet's topic in General Discussion
Eric, that is f**kin awesome! Talk about running hot! I still remember the FFH options talk from the MSN board. I also remember dengyu and I miss his contributions. -

Sanjeev, do you know if Francis was the only one making investment decisions back then? I recall that it was started as a club with his Bell co-workers, which became one of the Chou funds (RRSP or associates, I think). -
Nothing investing related. Came across this and thought it was crazy enough to share.

Do you mean it should not be trading at sub 2? I'm just trying to be patient with this one...

How Apple Plays the Pricing Game
EdWatchesBoxing replied to farnamstreet's topic in General Discussion
I guess as long as Apple stays cool, people will buy without doing too much research. I didn't realize AAPL is over 260! -
Berkowitz has to talk his fund up a bit. It's his business. I guess FAIRX's size is advantageous relative to average size of the companies in the fund.

Besides this forum, I'm also a regular on the 2 plus 2 poker forum. Poker is my main hobby. I still like watching it on TV. The first time I went to the casino, I played blackjack and someone tried to teach me how craps worked. To try to develop an edge, I studied how to count cards with blackjack. I stopped playing craps when I found out I could never gain an edge. A few years later, I found poker. I also like to watch boxing and to a lesser extent MMA. I really like football movies. Main thing is to spend my free time with my wife.

The shareholders are very stupid. It's funny that the lead director is Mike Harris. Stronach took in over 52 million in compensation from 07-09. Ridiculous. I assume that he took so much over all those years and went out with a bang. On top of that, his daughter is on payroll. Of course his base was only 200k, wonderful ::)
