Good to see Ted's purchase of DTV making the big board
-
Allan does not have AIG, where are you seeing that. My mistake, saw the wrong 13F...
-
@berkshiremystery all of those funds you've listed have large shares in AIG including Allan Mecham.. very interesting
-
How do you know it was Ted's pick instead of Todd's? We surely can't tell yet but Ted has a tendancy to take heavily concentrated bets (DTV, DVA, LMCA). If this company moves to the +1% of overall portfolio, then we can probably estimate that it's a Ted pick.

Corner of Berkshire & Fairfax Message Board - 11th Anniversary!
Yours Truly replied to Parsad's topic in General Discussion
Great message board. Was happy to be admitted after several attempts at registering. :) Very glad to have found a message board chalk full of rational minded individuals. -
I'm huge on company's that buy back shares and acutally reduce their share count! I use CapitalIQ which I'm greatful to have access but here are some other free sites that you can use: http://www.theonlineinvestor.com/buybacks/ http://www.morningstar.com http://www.morningstar.com/invest/categories/stock-buyback http://www.cnbc.com/id/10001134/Stock_Buybacks

There's always something to do.. There's always spinoffs, merger arbs, etc I currently have over 150 companies on my watch list and when the market isn't offering any deals, I pick a company on the list and absorb myself in its financials, presentations, webcasts, conference calls.. So when the time comes, I'll be ready.. Plus it aids in building that all too important circle of competence

Fund Manager Featured in Magazine Article
Yours Truly replied to BargainValueHunter's topic in General Discussion
Looks like he underperformed the market by 5-6% in 2012? His turnover is pretty high it seems -
Good to see Ted Weschler keeping his conviction in his picks as 3 out of the top 5 largest non-Buffet chosen picks are is: 1. DTV 2. DVA 3. GM 4. LMCA 5. MTB

Top 10 Companies by Buyback Yield (APOL, SWY, DTV, AIG, etc)

Good to see DTV up there... it's still the largest non-Buffet holding in Berkshire's portfolio -
SHOSR - Sears Hometown & Outlet Stores Rights

Thanks for posting. Anyone know where I can find more information about Lender A (LEA) that is mentioned in Khrom Capital's letter. Autoinfo is another interesting stock owned by Khrom Capital: http://seekingalpha.com/article/1048651-autoinfo-a-growing-truck-freight-broker-not-priced-like-one Lender a = Finbond group in South Africa Yours Truly, Curious with how you came up with Finbond in South Africa. I was doing some research and my dots pointed towards SKS of India, but there are still a few holes in my story. If you'd like to exchange notes PM me since this was the SHOS thread. Thx Through the power of 'google'....... first article that popped up http://www.moneyweb.co.za/moneyweb-financial/sas-newest-bank-pays-10-on-deposits The article pretty much points to what Khrom was saying in his newsletter: - The licence was eventually granted in May 2012 - first banking licence awarded to a South African company in more than a decade. - Finbond offers smaller, shorter-term loans than most of its larger competitors. For example, the average Finbond loan is around R2 500 with a term of two and a half months. Then I pulled up trusty CapitalIQ and insider ownership is at 46% -
always bet on MALONE

Just finished "Cable Cowboys" and what Malone is doing with Liberty Global sounds like a repeat as to what he did with TCI but in Europe this time... Going by the average life expectancy in the US, he should have at least another 10 years and he seems like the focused type to work until his untimely day

You should love Urbana Corp then.. its a closed end fund that holds only exchanges and some smaller position in banks.. It's just too bad the person running it is a poor capital allocator

Tell me I'm Seeing Things: Prem Watsa only owns 1.47% of FFH now ?
Yours Truly replied to Shawn's topic in Fairfax Financial
According to CapitalIQ, Prem owns 8.52% of shares outstanding ~ $620 mil at 1,726,593 total shares held... Insiders own a total of 10.02% Southeastern Asset Management is the largest holders at 13.42% of shares outstanding I don't see Prems name listed in the top 5 sellers in the past quarter -
Japan had a much larger bubble and it's population is shrinking. Great capital allocation skills by the government via reducing share count!

Quite a bit of discussion on macro here.. I think i've spent my time limit on macro talk based on this thread "If you spend more than 13 minutes analyzing economic and market forecasts, you've wasted 10 minutes." - P. Diddy Lynch

Good to know that these guys are big on Liberty companies

dcollon, I have ordered it, but haven’t read it yet. Christopher1, instead, has already read “Cable Cowboy” (he is always one step ahead of me!! ;D ) and told me it is very interesting: for instance, he found that from 1974 Mr. Malone returned 91,000% for his shareholders! That’s better than Mr. Buffett and a result even our star ERICOPOLY could envy…!! ;D I really look forward to reading it! giofranchi Are you sure it's 91,000%? In the intro chapter of Cable Cowboys, it says Malone was responsible for 5,500% raise in TCI's stock since taking the helm..

Of those 4, Ackman is the only one short. Whoops my error, Chapman is long HLF and is a 35% position -
Loeb vs Ackman - This ought to be fun to watch
Yours Truly replied to longlake95's topic in General Discussion
So judging from online news/blogs/etc... it's essentially Loeb/Hempton vs Ackman/Chapman and everything rests on whether the government will take action or not
