You know, nobody is forcing you to engage here any more or less than you want to. But I assure you the choice to turn a political discussion into some personal comments reflects moreso on yourself than on me.

That's fair but again what was the alternative? Unlike Trump, Biden did not unconstitutionally deploy US troops and paramilitary goons on American soil. And again - the reason that bill failed was not because of Senate republicans - it was because of Trump's authoritarianism.

Oh yeah, seems like a real proper solution we've got right now. Do I need to post more silly videos of ICE violating the constitution? Should I add Benny Hill music?
-
What should Biden have done differently? Violate the constitution? The bipartisan bill was nowhere near perfect - it was in fact the essence of achieving something good, versus a perfect solution. I thought Trump and his GOP cronies cared so much about the problem of illegal immigration? Guess they care more about denying the democrats a "win" versus solving the actual problem. C'est la vie sous le roi....
-
The point is we could've had a good solution 18 months ago, versus an unconstitutional solution today. We got the unconstitutional solution because Trump didn't want anyone else to get credit for solving the problem, and he threatened everyone he could to ensure it went his way. When someone like that is in charge, bad outcomes are the result.
-
Well firstly, I disagree the problem was so bad that we needed to "build a wall" (didn't Trump build that wall in his first term? Why didn't it solve the problem?). But let's assume there was a big problem to solve: If you want to avoid extreme solutions, get Trump out of power. He is the king of extremist politics. I agree there was bureaucracy and a cautious-approach to illegal immigration, could some of that have been removed? Absolutely - and probably a middle-ground president and a split congress could have accomplished that. There was a 2024 bipartisan border control bill that Senate republicans killed: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/may/23/senate-democrats-immigration-border-bill Republicans, who have repeatedly demanded Democrats act on the border, abandoned the compromise proposal at the behest of Donald Trump who saw it was a political “gift” for Biden’s re-election chances. The problem is at the top of the house.

Folks may be too busy with federal troops taking over their hometowns due to "national security reasons"

Also - what happens today when middle managers screw up or make poor decisions? Relatively nothing, really...
-
This is why it only replaces 50% of the workforce. But the 50% (or whatever percentage) is a very significant cost savings. How feasible is up for debate, but that's the consensus objective.
-
The AI spend will address a single cost: that the majority of office jobs, middle management, white collar positions…these are positions that do not require any unique talent. Train an AI model with the communication and problem solving strategy of the generic individual with a bachelors/masters degree, and you can replace 50% of white collar employees. That is a huge, huge ongoing corporate expense which these models aim to replace. That is the value proposition.

Guns don't kill people, cocaine kills people!
-
I think your post edit attempted to address my question but I'll push back because I think you are just making my point for me: These two statements don't seem to align. If the data shows that access to guns is not significant risk factor, then why is the enforcement of laws to limit gun access the biggest risk factor?

I took one ride on a friend's bike a few weekend ago and thought, "well I can sense myself falling into another new expensive hobby!" Now they have convinced me to demo a spot mayhem 140, so I am guessing within the next few months there will be a 3-5k bike in the garage, waiting for next spring! https://spotbikes.com/collections/bikes/products/mayhem-140 I'm up in the Colorado mtns near Breckenridge, so its a lot of world class downhill, moreso than gravel trails...everyone recommended a full suspension vs. a hardtail, so I guess that is where I am going...and after ride #1 I am now looking at padded shorts!

Correct me where I am wrong: You have compiled a list of factors that cause/influence the frequency of school gun violence. Access to guns is apparently not a factor. Let's assume that is correct. I am arguing there must be some unique factor(s) to the US that other countries do not have, to explain the large discrepancy between school gun violence in the US vs. rest of world. Would you agree? If so, which of the causes you have compiled are unique to the US and explain the discrepancy in volume?
-
How do you reconcile your statement with the fact that the US had 58x more school shootings than the rest of the world, combined? https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/school-shootings-by-country

Finally after living in the mountains and I just recently got on a MTB on some beginner trails and really enjoyed it! Do you mountain bike? I am going out to demo some bikes next weekend. Similar and different from skiing, but kudos to you for helping maintain the trails!

Apologies for the explicit and disturbing imagery, fellow comrade!

Der fuher told me to get on that watchtower and do my job, it was just a business decision! Jeeze you guys can't just admit this is obviously another case of Stumpy and Co abusing their power. Call a spade a space, please! Drumpf isn't even threatening you guys and already you're bending over

You never watch them but know what they talk about for 30 min every day? :) I get your point but they are a reflection of the environment, late night always has been. Why is politics on the menu all the time? Why does Trump have like 200+ exec orders issues YTD? Why is Charlie Kirk getting shot? Why is the country so divided? It all starts at the top...bing bong!
-
Bingo. If this was a third world country, we would all be saying, "of course, this is just what dictators do!"
-
Isn't that just a matter of taste? It's like saying the world is better off without durian fruit. Hardly a reason to say the world is better off without it...I figured there was more to Sweet's comment that was being unsaid.

I largely agree with this. I think the changing nature of the world (globalization, interconnection) has necessitated some consolidating of power/decision making with POTUS, at least compared to the pre-WW2 era. But I also agree the "abuse" has gone too far. Trump I would argue has done the worst and shamelessly abuses his power, but there were other instances over the past 3 decades as well that I can recall. So I think you're spot-on in identifying the problem. The short term solution of electing a better leader is the right one, but take a look at this thread as one data point...what are the odds? I hope the pendulum swings back from where it is today but who knows. Democrats don't have a great rallying call and Republicans continue to embolden themselves, the benefit of fanaticism. Long term solutions are even more difficult: Reduce POTUS power and adopt more of a parliamentary driven government like Europe? I think that is where the US is heading as we mature as a nation, otherwise the alternative is something oligarch-driven like Russia. And I am not sure that is even possible with the current Supreme Court. Redefine executive orders? That would take a constitutional amendment I think, unlikely to pass Congress. Long way of saying I think the odds of Americans solving our own political problems are getting worse by the day.
