I see. I never used google alert before. Sounds pretty handy. I tried signed up alerts from SearsHolding's IR website, but it seems not working for me.

Alerts from SHLD IR won't get you much in terms of finding out about store closings... as far as I know none of the 2014 closings have had a press release from SHLD.

Last spring, the local K-Mart about 6 miles from me closed.

Sold for $12M. It's a nice suburban Chicago location.

I am assuming it was company owned.

ChicagoRealEstateDaily.com reported in February that the developer, James Dremonas,

owner of Pete's Fresh Market, paid $12 million for the Kmart store in Willowbrook.

The Kmart store closed in the spring.

Wondering if this is representative of the sales we are seeing?

Also wondering what you could gleen from the tax records as to the value that property was assessed at previously?

According to this article the property was indeed owned by Sears

Sears in Dubuque Iowa (Kennedy Mall) -- Lease not renewed. Closing Late April 2014.

http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/Sears-Closing-Dubuque-Kennedy-Mall-Store-in-Late-April-241382241.html

They're averaging 1 per business day this year.  Me likey.

56 closings in the first 53 days of 2014.  I like that pace.  I don't expect that pace to stay at 1/day, but it is nice to see Lampert making significant moves.

We cant be sure that every Sears/Kmart closing is being reported online. It might be higher than 56 closings in 53 days. We will find out more in 4 days.

Does anybody know approximately how many they had closed YTD at this time last year?

2012 annual report: 2073 total stores

q1 2013:                  2062 total stores

q2 2013:                  2036 total stores

q3 2013:                  2018 total stores

all figures are excluding Sears Canada

Thanks. So it looks like most of the closings were in the 2nd quarter. So far this year most of the closings seem to be for April, which is still first quarter. So hopefully we get a hell of a lot more announcements in the coming few months for closings in 2Q.
