jeffmori7
Another Canadian topic..but it's not about RIM nor hockey playoffs! As I know there is a lot of Canadians on this board, I'm curious to know what you all think about the federal election campaign. What do you think will happen? Don't hesitate to explain you choice and describe you seat projections!
Guest broxburnboy
Not to nitpick... but that would be "Canadian", the Canadiens are a hockey team.. and they just got voted off!

augustabound
If Jack Layton wasn't a socialist, then I think he would win in a landslide. But he has no plan, other than taxation, to pay for all his dreamland promises. Of course the NDP are a one man show. Once you get past Cactus Jack, they have nobody. The liberals need some "corporate re-structuring"......OK, they need a total overhaul. Maybe a call in to Chretien to kick some liberal a**, just like he did that reporter back in the day. :) Maybe Chretien and Paul Martin can tag team Harper and Flaherty. Someone needs to slap their arrogant butts around.
Smazz
Hey there Hab fan, Dont feel bad - Leaf fan here :'( I would add an option to your poll - say put in a Coalition (though I hate that term) Lib/NDP govt cause i think thats what it will be barring the drama of a "Prime Minister". Like it or not, they will prob be the group with the votes to push through the bills. Thats what i think will happen.
Uccmal
Coalition: NDP prime minister with liberal cabinet ministers included. Ignatieff will have to resign. Harper will have to resign for losing the government... finally. No change in general economic policy except gradual deficit reduction. Northern European Countries run successful coalitions regularly. There is no reason to suggest Canada cound not successfully do the same.

Who cares who gets to visit the Queen.
Smazz
Whoda thunk? Look at the Orange Crush - lol (disclaimer I have not and will not vote NDP) http://www.electionalmanac.com/canada/polls.gif
EdWatchesBoxing
Coalition is a real possibility. Layton will be the only leader left standing. Harper will finally be gone. NDP will kill proposed corporate tax cuts. That's my take. Anyone else think the GST should have never been cut the 2%?
jeffmori7
I fear for a Harper majority, but I think he will get a minority. In this context, I hope Jack could lead a coalition, which could be a good thing. I also think the liberal party does have the more equilibrate program but they don't succeed at convincing the Canadians. I personally think Ignatieff is a bright guy, but in the same time, LPC hasn't not renewed itself enough in the last year. So maybe Ontario will vote Liberal enough, Quebec will vote NDP and we could finally get rid of Harper. And Go Canucks Go!
EdWatchesBoxing
I think only the GTA will be voting liberal. The one mississauga riding that is not liberal is ours. I found out that back in 08, the liberal MP lost out to the Conservative candidate by less than 300 votes. I went out to the advance polls on good friday to get it done early. I am sure a lot of people have become scared of Iggy due to the GST hike quote commercial that the Conservatives love to put on high rotation. Smazz
Quebec will vote NDP and we could finally get rid of Harper. What about the BLOC? Im sorry if there are any Sovereignists on this board but damn, we do look silly allowing these guys in Parliament when all they want is to separate. Im sorry if there are any Sovereignists on this board but damn, we do look silly allowing these guys in Parliament when all they want is to separate. I agree that the Bloc shouldn't be recognized on a national platform. But, from what the media is saying this time around, they aren't even a factor in any discussions since they seem to be bleeding seats. If there is a formal coalition or an informal one, they won't even be considered for an opinion on the matters since team orange and red can do it without them. EdWatchesBoxing
IMO, if Quebec wants the Bloc to represent their interests, that's fine. But you don't invite a separatist to a federal debate.
Smazz
Seriously, is there not some law we can make to have them not be part of our parliament, allowed on committee etc etc if it is clear what is their mandate?
augustabound
Seriously, is there not some law we can make to have them not be part of our parliament, allowed on committee etc etc if it is clear what is their mandate? That's why Cactus Jack wants proportional representation. He argued that the Bloc received 1.3M votes and has 51 seats, yet team Green had 1M votes and has no seats. But, if the polls to date are at least somewhat accurate (hardly, I know), then after Monday the Bloc will be silent since they continue losing seats. But I do agree, if a party is going to be invited to a national debate, and have the leader at least in the running to be P.M. they need a national campaign, not a provincial. mranski
The Bloc are reappearing as federal NDP. Change of brand and approach, similar ideas. The Bloc wasn't working for quebec voters. Harper minority, will fall soon, and become Layton lead coalition with Liberal support. Ignatieff and Harper will resign. Small chance of a Harper minority if winds blow against jack in the last few days.

KFRCanuk
I don't understand recent election attack adds. Not very Canadian if you ask me. I don't understand why federal parties can't work together. Did we really have to have an election again (1997)in the middle of one of the worse floods? I mean it wouldn't have taken much to get an opposition party to support the budget. We are all Canadian! This drives me nuts. I mean 4 questions per day? Shouldn't there be a law against news orgs taking money for covering a campaign?

I mean, even the green party is being treated like shit and I gotto tell ya, i think they have more brains than the bloc. Well, I'm no expert, but the theory sounds good to me. But keep in mind, that Layton only supported this in the past as it would get him more seats also. He only used the Green Party as his example in the debate as not to draw attention to his own status. (I'm guessing since everyone who's not a Conservative supporter sees Harper as power hungry, Layton doesn't want to draw that conclusion to himself). It makes sense to me if 1/30th of the country voted Green, then they should represent 1/30th of Parliament MP's. I just don't understand how proportional representation works for MP's sitting in Ottawa. Right now, if you win your riding, you get your seat in the House of Commons, no matter how many voters in your riding voted. I don't know how MP's are chosen based on proportional representation. If I won with 25000 votes and you won your riding with 9000 votes, do we both go to Ottawa and have the same "power", for lack of a better word? What more reasons do we need? I am in the anyone but Harper camp right now.
Smazz
and to think this was going to be a boring election! This should be a right down to the wee hrs election. About Layton and Prop Rep - well hes prob not that nut to think this wave will continue when both parties have newer/better leaders - unless he thinks he can own Qc going forward - it would be prob in his best interest to get some kind of Prop Rep. How it would work in terms of seats/votes - well as has been noted above, I believe it has been done in other countries so there must be some kind of system however Canada is a slllllowwwwww to change country for these types of things so I wouldnt bet on it. Viking
I am not a fan of minority governments. They result in frequent elections. And as we all know, an important part of getting elected is to make lots of (expensive) promises. In the old days we had inflation (with election promises); with constant elections and minority governments we have hyper inflation. Over time our strong fiscal position will be eroded. I much prefer that one party get a majority and a 4 year mandate to govern; early in their term they can make the hard (necessary) decisions. If they abuse things they will get voted out after 4 years. I am not a fan of proportionate representation (like many European countries). My fear is you simply would get interest group politics (i.e. special interests) running the agenda and an even more disfunctional political system than the current minority system. We would have more regional parties (the Block is good for Canada?) and ethnic parties would also likely form; given our crazy diversity I am not sure we would like what we got. Having said all the above, the Conservatives have had every opportunity to build a stronger coalition and easily obtain a majority. Unfortunately, they are so focussed on keeping their base happy they keep pissing everyone else off. If they do not get a majority they only have themselves to blame. My guess is Jack Layton may well be the next Prime Minister. The Conservatives will get the most seats and will be asked to form the next government; not sure if the Block will have enough seats to help the conservatives to a majority. If not, the NDP and Liberals may actually form the next government. If it looks like this may happen watch Bay Street have a heart attack (as the NDP platform is built on repealing the Conservative tax breaks to businesses). Monday may be quite the historic event in Canadian politics.
