  1. I may need to read Sleuth again.

All I remember is stalking executives from companies you're interested in.

Waiting in the lobby near coffee time and following them to their favourite coffee house and eavesdropping.

Judging by the people who liked the book. I may have missed a lot............... :D

  2. Yeah, having spouse that supports you emotionally and financially as you go for second act is definitely a big plus.

Yep, I'm there now. If my wife wasn't as good at what she does (and obviously rewarded for it by her company), I wouldn't be able to transition to a second career.

And yes, count me in the programming/software development as a second career..................hopefully. :D

  3. The other factor is that Vancouver Island is mostly run by socialists so in many places the property taxes are much higher relative to the value and services offered.

That's something I hadn't thought about. Thanks for that.

You would assume services would compare similarly across the province with the exception of anything that may need transport from the mainland.

  4.

Vancouver Island is just far enough away that it acts like a separate market. Residents are somewhat held hostage by BC Ferry access to the mainland.

I knew of the cost but didn't realize the entire time involved. Not that it matters much to us. If we ever do make the move, my wife works in software and works from home.

I also looked at the demographics and read that Nanaimo isn't as diverse as the lower mainland. (no international buyers to drive the prices up)

A couple of years ago we thought about a place on Pender Island but the gulf seems like a world of its own based on what we found.

    Thanks nodnub.

  5. Not investment related but what would the reason a place like Nanaimo has escaped the bubble? We're always on the look out to potentially move west and Nanaimo has some beautiful homes close to everything and have a harbour view for under $600k.

Is it the simple fact it's not on the mainland?

Edit: in case anyone is interested, this is what $499k gets you. Ten minutes to Discovery Harbour and shopping.

  6. I thought that the U.S. VP had one job. To be there in case the President kicks the bucket. To have a ticket with a 70 year old candidate and a 74 year old vp seems a little non sensical. no?

The West Wing taught me the V.P. is nothing more than a doormat.

House of Cards taught me the V.P. is a key cog in the congressional wing and wields much power.

But I'm Canadian and we have no V.P.  So I only know what Hollywood teaches me. Which is 100% accurate. :D

  7. (augustabound, thanks for the search tip, never used it in the years I've been using Amazon and Look Inside.)

I only figured that out while trying to help out here. :D

But I saw someone post to Twitter that he said 615-616 as OracleofCarolina suggested.

I'm also not a shareholder and don't trust Bigliar.

    pg 616

It follows that the responsibility of managements to act in the interest of their shareholders includes the obligation to prevent -- insofar as they are able to do so by proper corporate measures -- the establishment of either absurdly high or unduly low prices for their securities.
  8. If I hire someone to do the lawn (or most other tasks for that matter), should I find someone with worker's compensation or would home insurance usually cover their injuries? I've always been "do it yourselfer" so I'm a little raw on this. Thanks!

Buffett_Groupie said in another thread his son is looking for work.  :P

He even said he wants an internship. He'll mow your lawn for free!

Name him Charlie if it's boy!  :D

  9. Let me also echo the sentiments of him working/selling himself without your help.

Being given something doesn't mean nearly as much as earning it yourself.

But I think he also needs to see the different options for himself. I worked retail for a long time and it gives you a different perspective on dealing with people and interacting with them.

Spoiler alert: the customer is NOT always right.  :D

Maybe you'll be lucky and he will find a job in finance. But be prepared as a father. They will teach him there is a whole world outside of Berkshire Hathaway.  Are you prepared for that? ;D

  10. We bought a new Kia Sorrento and the extended warranty was for 7 years and I think it was about $1000.

$1800 seems a bit steep, especially considering you payed $18000 for a used.

was that 7 years on top of the manufacture's warranty?

No, the manufacturer's warranty is 5 years. And I mistyped the cost, it was $1300.

They also wrap extras, if you want to call them that, into the warranty upsell. They spray a lifetime guaranteed rust proof on. So long as you have it inspected at Kia each year, it's covered.

They also put the clear stone guard film on the front end.
