  1. Here is another problem - most of the Canadian code monkeys find jobs in the U.S. I don't think there are enough jobs in Canada to support all the engineering grads.

My wife is the director of produce at a software company in Toronto and there are plenty of jobs for software developers.  I don't know what a code monkey is........I guess that's a derogatory term a pencil pusher uses.

  2. I bought in on a Twitter recommendation. I think it was Morgan Housel, I think.

I finished it within 2-3 days. Absolutely riveting and it read like a Soviet Union spy novel from decades past rather than a modern bio.

Edit: modernish. I realize part of the book takes place before the fall of the USSR.

  3.

Just launched Dashboard -- a powerful, auto-updating portfolio tracker with integrated real-time quotes, news, SEC filings, and fundamental data.  Currently supports US and Canada, with additional markets to follow. http://www.rocketfinancial.com/LoadDashboard.aspx

That support for Canadian markets is weak. Unless they file in the U.S. it just shows the name with a chart for the share price.

  4. This is probably the most welcome, dumbest corporate decision in history. A 2nd corporate HQ... Really?

I know plenty of companies who have multiple research centers but, could you please name one U.S. company that has two HQ in the U.S.?

    Cardboard

What happens if one HQ decides one thing, and the other decides something else?

Will the AMZN empire split in two?

Will there be an Eastern AMZN and a Western AMZN?

What happens if one of them is overrun?

There's still a commander in chief over the entire company regardless of how many "HQ's" there are.

  5.

There are others I dont hold such as Magna, Linamar, Loblaws, Canadian Tire, Tim Hortons, Premium Brands.  They just never get cheap enough.

I've been saying that about BAM for 5+ years.  :-\

Agree on Power Corp.  Pwf: They lost their mojo when Senior Demarais turned it over to his sons.  Its become their private gravy train.

I stopped following them a few years ago. It's sad when businesses suffer under the kids lead.

  6. I recently checked this book out from the library and found it to be worth the price I paid for it.

Not much in the way of actionable insights, but if you're into amusing levels of narcissism, the book delivers in spades. It serves as a great illustration of the "Shoe Button Complex" identified by Buffett and Munger.

Yeah, I had little interest in this from the first time I heard he was releasing a book. He's just that guy who rubs me the wrong way and I really don't know why. Maybe his ego? Who knows.

Funny, narcissism is the first thought that came to mind when I heard too. Of course it doesn't help that some describe Bridgewater as being somewhat cultish.

I had to look up shoe button but it did make me laugh and I think you're right on with that.

  7. Not sure if this all got figured out already, but TNP was Texas National Petroleum.  It was a merger arbitrage I think.  See pages 93 and 94 of James Altucher's book "trade like warren buffett"

I found this on gurufocus. Most likely less in depth than the pages in James Altucher's book.

Buffett describes an arbitrage situation in which he invested that generated a 20%+ annualized return with little risk. When Union Oil announced it was buying Texas National Petroleum, Buffett noted that there were no anti-trust issues and the transaction was negotiated by controlling shareholders of the target. As such, he appraised the risk at virtually nil.
  8. "Believe me man is capable of creating more Bitcoin, they tell you they're not gonna do it but what they mean is they're not gonna do it unless they want to"

I've been on the Bitcoin sideline but have been interested for sure. I'm not sure if the interest is in the future of currency or getting a front row seat to a train wreck......

But all the times I saw someone say that Bitcoin isn't infinite I always kind of raised an eyebrow. From what I see the only limit on the number of Bitcoins is the written word of Satoshi in his white paper.

Then it gets forked and all of a sudden out of nowhere there's Bitcoin Cash....... Bitcoin has a ceiling as to total units but all someone has to do is fork the code and all of a sudden there's more....

I understand the differences between Bitcoin and Bitcoin cash but the fact seems to point to creating more whenever someone (or a group) wants to.

  9. I am sorry, I didn't mean to. I was genuinely surprised.

Fair enough, I jumped the gun a bit with my response.

I'm studying software development for a 2nd career and never gave search bots a thought.

Next thing you're going to tell me is some company tracks our searches........  ;D
