I don’t dispute that, I’m posting Bessents comments only because parts of it were strange.
-
“US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defends Trump's tariff plan, telling NBC News' Meet the Press on Sunday that Trump is making the "strategic" geopolitical decision to use the US's "economic might" to "avoid a hot war". "The national emergency is avoiding a national emergency," Bessent says. Bessent also says that Trump is trying to "avoid a conflict" by annexing Greenland. "What we know is that Greenland can only be defended if it is part of the US, and it will not need to be defended if it is part of the US," he adds. "I believe that the Europeans will understand that this is best for Greenland, best for Europe and best for the United States," he says.”
-
Not sure why the artic should be solely the responsibility of the US. Europe can also easily argue that they need Greenland for national security too - just as credibly. Anyway, we are mere watchers, we will see what happens.
-
The end result is the same cubs. That’s the point. The US doesn’t need to own Greenland to use Greenland to protect the US. Americans allies in NATO have been more than happy for America to have a military presence there.
-
It’s silly. What I can’t understand is why he saying something so silly. Who among his global audience believes it?
-
Greenland is in NATO though. The US and Europe, through NATO, already defend Greenland and have done since 1949 - nearly 80 years. I know you know this. The President supposedly thinks China and Russia are going to risk conflict with NATO to invade Greenland? It’s illogical. Maybe Trump wants Greenland, and then want to pull the plug on NATO after? That would make sense. Europe don’t have an obligation to give him Greenland or even entertain a bid. I think the only way he get it is through military force, and I don’t think Congress will allow him.
-
Are you Chinese though? I’m trying to understand your point of view. As far as I remember you are Chinese, and for China it would be great for Europe and the US to be at each others throat. However, if you are European or American it doesn’t make any sense at all.
-
Are you not Chinese Luke? Why would we European mobilise? We aren’t going to war.
-
What’s this got to do with the left though Reds? It doesn’t matter to me what Trump thinks on this matter. He’s acting like a clown. Im not an American, so it doesn’t really matter what I think. But I agree with so much of his policies, and then there are fringe policies I just hate. Plus I hate the ass kissing he demands. Weird mix
-
In regard to Greenland, what do you think? I wholeheartedly agree Europe was free loading on the US defence spending for decades. I draw the line at threatening to take territory not belonging to you, territory which belongs to your allies. There has been some discussion about Trump playing an angle, looking to negotiate some kind of deal. I don’t believe that to be the case.
-
Wise up. Just apply 10% reciprocal tariffs.
-
I’ll happily eat those 10% tariffs. He seems to think the West is his fiefdom to do as he wants. Europe should put lots of troops in Greenland and just ignore him. Denmark should ask the US to leave the military base. I doubt he is going to get a declaration of war through Congress to militarily take it.

Things have not dramatically changed. Trump was saying these before the Canadian election - go back and look. Canada isn’t at war, please stop acting like it choosing to ally with the Soviet Union to fight Nazi Germany during world war 2. On trade, you must be unfamiliar with my posts, I have consistently said we need to stop feeding our geopolitical rival (China) with trade. It’s not like I make economic policy or support the policy, but at least I’ve been consistent for years, so it’s not a gotcha. I’ve not been ranting and raving about the imagined dictator - Trump - and then cheering a newly cemented strategic partnership with an actual dictator Xi.
-
Why are you pretending that I said Canada needs Trump’s to approve Canada's trading partners? During the Canadian election Carney said China, not Trump or the US, was Canada’s biggest threat: https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/china-is-biggest-threat-from-geopolitical-sense-says-canada-pm-mark-carney-8200216/amp/1 So he goes and makes deal with an actual dictator, and a country which is far closer to be fascist than the US, and everyone is clapping like seals. Principles huh?
-
This is daft. It makes no sense to be cosying up to Xi and China just because you don’t like Trump.
-
Compared to what Spooky, pretending you’re going to sell Greenland? Military action. You let me know what the good alternatives are.
-
Even if the Trump did decide to take Greenland (can he with executive power?). What’s likely to happen short term - NATO split. Long term, Democrats will get back into power one day, and maybe try to repair damage in relationships, and you might very well find that Greenland ends up back in Danish hands. As for right now. Danish should kindly ask the US to vacate the base, and get a pan European force in there instead.
-
No offense taken. I’m referring to the tariffs, he puts tariffs on, so what? May hurt us but it hurts the US too. Just ignore him.
-
Just wait him out. Greenland belongs to Denmark and Europe. There is no logical reason for the US to have it other than Trump want the minerals there. If the US don’t want to help protect it, which is entirely their right, then leave it to European nations to do so.

I’m from the UK, and anyone claiming that we have more free speech than America is retarded. This looks to be from the FT, maybe they missed all the news articles of people getting in trouble with the police and sometimes jailed for saying things deemed to be hateful.
-
Also a ridiculous thing to say. Applying immigration law does make you a fascist. Asking for ID doesn’t make you a fascist. Wise up.
-
You're being ridiculous.
-
Not true. It’s sad what happened to you and others on this board.
-
Well, I am a scientist of 20 years... so it's OK that you disagree.
