  1. even with neymar missing Germany will be playing against 12 men....

Fifa wants that Bra vs Arg final and that's all you need to know....

    And that’s why I don’t bet on football  :D

Besides – theres only so much help FIFA can give a side… they do have to try to do a few minor things like defend…

  2. Supposed to be a low number of hurricanes impacting Florida according to the experts.

Given how accurate the experts are I am now stocking up on supplies and checking my hurricane insurance.

  3. Just one thing - the whole 'it was hard for me to get into the country, why should it be easy for them' argument is just stupid. It's a grown-up equivalent to the fourth graders saying that it's right to bully first-graders because when they were in first grade the fourth-graders bullied them.

As none of them are looking to be here long term then this is rendered irrelevant in this case. My two reasons that made it worth reporting are mentioned just above.

  4. Thank you all for the responses!!

I have informed our compliance department (and did so before reading these responces). The reasoning is two fold.

First my company needs to maintain its integrity. If employees are lying about the reasons to enter the USA and potentially being encouraged to do so then that’s a major lapse in ethics that needs to be addressed and corrected. The intention may be well meaning but the effect is devastating for reputation.

Secondly if the employees are travelling here and entering the country under the incorrect visa then the effect of them has repercussions for them personally. If they are caught they could be fined, deported and never allowed to enter the States again. For those that are looking for a long term career with the company (or elsewhere) that could have a major negative impact on them personally.

By ensuring this is all done above board I believe that I’m acting in the best interests of the company and its employees.

The potential downside is that some of the short term goals of the employees may not be met – additionally If they have to return – or some others can’t travel for a short while then some of the short terms goals of the company may also be missed.

Ultimately I’ve been led to believe that the company is currently acting illegally (even if it is in its best interests) than as someone who has recently undergone compliance training I felt it was a matter of sufficient importance to report it internally.

If someone decides that I’ve caused too much trouble  and it leads to problems for be , well, that’s life. I’ll deal with the consequences of that and move on. I hope it is resolved soon.

BTW one of the team arriving shortly is a guy who I consider a friend – I’ll miss him being here but I’ll know I’m also protecting him in the long term.

The dice has been thrown  - lets see what happens.

  5. I work for a large company in the USA.

We currently have a small team in the office that have arrived from a Branch in India. We are training them to do some of our work.

In order to be in the USA they were instructed to tell immigration that they were here on holiday as they wouldn't get Visa's to work here. For six weeks.

Next week a further three teams are arriving on the same premise to go over all of our work and see what can be moved abroad.

All three teams are "on holiday" as they wouldn't be able to get work visa's either.

As someone who moved to the USA and has legally gone through the process of getting a visa, green card and citizenship - with a lot of money and heartache along the way - I'm extremely frustrated that these people are lying to get into the USA and work here (obviously the fact that they are ultimately looking to take our jobs abroad is a major factor in this too) and even more so that the company is colluding with this by getting them to lie about the purpose of the visit.

I'm contemplating calling the company whistle blower hotline but also homeland security.

What position would you take - agree - or think I'm being an arse??

  6. The real question should be what kind of woman are you spending your time with ?

Charlie Chaplin doesn't have the greatest track record with women.

Charlie took a long time to find the right one for him - when he did he stayed married until his death - over 30years..

makes me laugh that he was a genius of cinema and was refused re-entry to the USA because he might have been a commie.

    immigration are such fine people.....

  7. I don't know if this is "cheap", but once I have sold my current apartment, I don't think I will ever own property again.  Reason?  Over the long term, I target 12% + from my portfolio.  Why own property when (long term) it can't return much more than nominal GDP plus a bit.  In the UK, as of last week, a married couple can invest £30k tax free, it was around £22k.

Thoughts?  Does anyone else have this attitude.

I have a wife and kids. Owning our own house give my wife peace of mind. Wanna put a value on that return???

and I hate cheap people. Frugal is a far nicer term to use...

  8. Lets see-  we have a car each – the newest one is 11 years old

Bought a house last year – have no mortgage now. Looked a new ones nearby – an extra 200k for a house that has a lot of things I don’t need, space I don’t need and a higher tax bill. No thanks.

I cook at home a lot – its my creative outlet.

Holidays and flights are always booked at a good price – I won’t go anywhere if I can’t get a deal on it. I was in vegas last week (my annual indulgence). Room - $60 for 6 nights and return flight from florida under 300…

We did a lot of the renovations to the house ourselves – I learnt some plumbing pretty quickly and turned a potential $600 bill from a plumber into a $100 by doing it myself… at the cost of slicing my hands open a couple of times :D

Buying from the clearance rack… you mean there are other clothes on sale???

We do eat out about once a week, I have cable so I can watch Live sport from Europe (and record the programs we like to watch so I can skip the ads).  I will be renovating the kitchen soon – and trying to work out how much I can do as opposed to a contractor.

I’m having a bar put in on my patio.. as in I’ve spend six months working ut exactly what I want and I’ll build it myself. I think this is more to challenge myself though…

  9. I'm thinking about installing solar panels but I have no idea where to start. is it worth it? whats the payback. are they effiecient enough yet - what about tax breaks.

If I end up staying where I am (florida) then how long do I have to stay to make it worthwhile - or if I move can I take them with me.

does anyone have insight they can share?

ultilamtley I'd love to be off the grid (geothermal / solar and electric car etc) but I'm not sure how to get there yet...

  10. Investing is what I do to pay the bills, but providing advice is what gives me joy.  Nothing makes me happier than helping someone.  It's what I do.  It gives me that twinkle in my eye.  Look at what I did for Gio.  Thanks to my advice he now has someone special in his life.  Not everyone is able to do this.  Somehow I am able to both focus on investing and care deeply about others at the same time.

So in future we have to address you as "Dear Abbey"?

  11. Perhaps the best lesson for us all .... is everyday recognition that money is the servant, not the master.

Last year we won, but did you take some of that win off the table to make your life going forward better (ie: extra mortgage/student loan payments, crossed off a bucket list item, etc.). And if you did not take money off .... then just what, exactly, did this servant actually do for you.

We are in a casino; & we all could lose at any time.

    SD

    yes.

I finished the year up 30% - could have been higher but I cashed out to buy a house. I'm now mortgage free which improves my cash flow per month and will increase my quality of life (I hope). also now have the peace of mind of have control over the house - and that makes a big difference to us as a family.

I could have kept the money invested and been better off on paper but a you say - you have to make money the servant.

Is there any point in investing your time in stock picks and reading everything you do if you then proceed to do nothing with the profits from that?
