  1. You might want to first read "The halo effect" before wasting time on this book. Vinod Really? It's not very good? It had some good reviews on Amazon... Anything in particular that you guys don't like about this book? Also, "The Halo Effect", is that the one by Phil Rosenzwig?
  2. [amazonsearch]Good to Great - Jim Collins[/amazonsearch] Started reading this book a few days ago. About a chapter into it and enjoying it very much so far. Seems like a great read to get to know what makes a "great" company "great". The type of circumstances, the type of people, the type of leadership (Collins talks about Level 5 Leaders; those with humility & will and a willingness to put the company ahead of their selfish motives.) I'll post my review of the book once I'm done (though it might be a while now with school going) :) . Anyone else read it yet?
  3. Haha, I was just thinking that too! ;D
  4. Turned 20 a few months ago :) Pretty glad I found this forum... I`m learning a lot from the posts of many of the experienced investors here!
  5. Honestly, having emigrated from India, it makes me sad to see the situation of this amazing country. Especially pathetic to see the poor excuses the politicians are able to get away with; "Shinde deflected criticism, pointing out that the United States and Brazil also had huge power failures in recent years. "I ask you to look at the power situation in other countries as well," he said." Looking at the facts there are actually enough resources in the country to have ample energy, food, water to feed and house everybody and stabilize the population and economy. Since we're on the topic on this thread, I'd like the hear the opinions of the members of this forum (some of whose opinions I highly respect) regarding how they could see India getting away from corruption specifically and poverty, etc. - I think education and awareness will be the largest factors. Education has the effect of slowing down over population growth. Awareness and the desire to hold people accountable will take the country's law system. But how would that sorta change come about? What can be done on a practical yet substantial level?
  6. The article's a joke and the comments are even funnier: "Don't fall for Warren's "aw shucks, good ol'boy" routine. He is the ultimate con man. The real reason he is telling Obama to raise taxes is so that other business owners can't grow to compete with his businesses. He has been fighting paying his taxes for a decade. He has no intention of paying the new higher rate. He just wants gov't to confiscate wealth so that it stifles competition." Interesting to see what watching FOX News (in the lightest sense of the word "News") does to people.
  7. That sounds awesome! Does anybody know of anything like this, here in Toronto? Good luck with the move!
  8. Definitely! He doesn't adhere to the fundamentals of value investing, yet his form of investing seems like the right thing to do (if you can). More fascinatingly; "Jon Favreau, director of the Iron Man movies, describes in his article how Elon Musk was the inspiration for Favreau's film depiction of genius billionaire Tony Stark." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Man#In_other_media
  9. This was great, thanks! With all the noise the media's making about JPM, it's always great to hear what Mr. Buffett has to say about the company and Dimon (great guy indeed... definitely very "candid" as Mr. Buffett puts it).
  10. I missed this... damn job haha. Anybody know if there's a relay of this later tonight? OR online? I definitely wanna hear everything he said about JPM. It sure is! I concur, Dimon is a great guy and this London CIO loss is being blown way out of proportion by the media... as expected.
  11. I had no idea Tetra Pak is this big. Started reading about their history, pretty cool how the product and the company emerged. Sad to hear about Eva Rousing though. Thanks for the post!
  12. The file is 25 MBs but I cut it into pcs and posted it to scribd; heres a link: Part 1 (pg. 1 - 50): http://www.scribd.com/doc/99963099/Manual-of-Ideas-Part-1 Part 2 (pg. 51 - 100): http://www.scribd.com/doc/99963408/Manual-of-Ideas-Part-2 For some reason my pdf printing/compression software kept on corrupting the file with the last 68 pages... if I can fix that I'll upload those as well. Either way, here are the first 100 pages. Never mind, I just uploaded the entire original copy (all 168 pgs). Here you go: http://www.scribd.com/doc/99963746/Full-file -Yash

  14. Ha! I didn't mean that I use the iPad for phonecalls, but I can see how the juxtaposition gave that impression :) I do use the iPad for Facetime with the family sometimes, though, but that doesn't look quite as silly as what you had in mind... Speaking of awkward moments with an iPad... anybody remember this from engadget? http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/25/caption-contest-spike-lee-asks-obama-to-smile-for-the-camera/ "Just because it can doesn't mean you should..." haha
  15. This device is amazing for multimedia purposes and even note taking. One of my buddies just got it and loves it, though he doesn't like talking on it without his Bluetooth headset because it looks kinda ridiculous when you put it up to your face haha. It's probably all the apple fan boys hating. ;D
  16. Though he sounds kinda like a RIM Brochure here, I can still elicit some trust and respect for Heins. After listening to some of his interviews and parts of his conference calls, something tells me he's a good guy and fairly capable (maybe just the engineer in me empathizes with the fellow engineer haha). However, more importantly, my belief is that if Mr. Watsa was willing to pay more than $40 for RIM shares and keep buying up until earlier this year; I'm more than glad to pay just 8 bucks per share for the same company. As Mohnish Pabrai says in his interview with Steve Forbes, why work hard when some of the smartest men in the world (Mr. Buffett, Mr. Watsa, etc.) have done the grunt work and you can just as easily ride their coattails. :D
  17. A "middle-class southern kid" with a philosophy degree, working as a fly fishing guide in one of the most exotic parts of the world gets picked up by one of the greatest hedge-fund managers ever to work in NYC. Including the kidnapping and the endorsements, does anybody else see this turning into some sort of Action movie?
  18. Doesn't sound too unfortunate to me :D Hope you have a great time!
  19. Ahaha, "Too big to Flail"... I believe that act also covers the Cholesterolized Dietry Obligations (CDOs).
  20. If I understand correctly, it is your birthday today, sir! :D So, I think I speak on behalf of mostly everyone here in saying we hope you have a great day and an even better year, and also we are highly appreciative of the fine work you're doing of running this great Forum! P.S. it would seem as though the USA celebrates your special day with a national holiday and some fireworks ... no big deal haha.
  21. This sounds like a great opportunity. I would be interested in applying for a position as a Preliminary Research Analyst (in the Vegetarian Product Offerings Division).... You might be pleased to know that I have had experience with Edible Product Consumption since birth. I also specialize in Vegetable Derived Condiments' Pairings with said "Burgers". ;D
  22. Great article! This guy is brilliant. I first learned of him on TED, here's a link to one of his presentations: I like the his examination of why many similar countries have very high rates of organ donation (at death) while others have very low... it's worth a watch! :)
  23. I totally agree but it seems to me that, this may be the case b/c maybe the analysts interested in publishing a contrarian view are discouraged by their editors sometimes... I cite the case from "Confidence Game" where the author; Christine Richard said a financial reporter's performance is judged based on how the stock market reacts to their reporting. Also, she mentioned (if I remember correctly) how her request to cover MBIA's faux shell company; Negris Caulis was out right rejected by her editor. Along with that, I think we don't usually get a chance to hear the analysts who are right on the money about a company going down way before it's cool, because they're usually hushed away or the general news consumer isn't interested in listening to them (though I think the case is different for most of the members here). I too would like to see things change; maybe they would if we aligned the interests of the financial reporters with the buyside investors... but here's my guess; once things start to stabilize again (in w/e # of years) and the next bubble gets in the making and market sentiment goes up... once again the best of analysts shall again be ignored... and rinse, repeat. What do you think?
  24. Yeah, the battery would be an issue. But they could make the screen black, but when you flip to camera mode, it goes clear for the photograph. They have the technology to do that today, but hiding the battery and circuitry would be difficult around the rest of the phone. But they will do it one day! Heck, if you watch even the newer Star Trek's with Picard, their communicators were bigger than phones today, so technology has come a long way in a decade. Cheers! Actually you're right, there are some games you might have seen that use the camera in a similar manner. They make the room you're playing in, the backdrop for the game. Check it out: Basic technology but the application of it is quite fascinating (course its actually the gyro-meter doing all the work in this game). And yea, I don't think we'll see anything like the transparent phone, anytime soon... and I see your point Liberty, it would be pretty impractical/annoying... majority of the time ;D.
  25. That is some amazing video editing. It would be soo cool if they could make a phone with a see through screen; though I've only seen that for black LCD displays... like those old clocks. However, the projection keyboard does exist... included in a phone would be a good idea! Here's one you can buy now if anyone is interested (not soliciting... never used this product; I don't know if it's actually effective or not): http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/cellphone/e722/ That teenager video has got to be the funniest thing I've seen in a while!!! He actually seems like a great guy, to his dad: "I wanna get you and mom a nice [house] for when you get old!". ;D
