That's exactly what I was thinking while reading this thread now. A more general idea would be to make registration free yet a bit more difficult, i.e. if someone can't be bothered to spend a couple of minutes to finish a task it's fine if they do not register. So it can be a couple of sentences for why they want to register, or what is compound interest etc.. Assuming registration can be linked to emails like this.
