Companies allowed to press release their unaudited statements before SEC filing?

Basic question:

 

Are companies allowed to do a press releases of their unaudited financial statements without filing with the SEC?

Others probably know better than me, but I  believe companies can release financial information in a press release outside of the regular quarterly and annual filings, but they'll probably have to file an 8-K with the SEC as that is clearly material information.
