Where is the Loyalty? Where is the Support?
Sea Island replied to Parsad's topic in Fairfax Financial
Sanjeev, I leave for Toronto in the AM and I am looking forward to seeing you. I had not logged in to the site in some time so I was distressed to read your posting regarding the dinner. I was at Joe Badali's, perhaps not the first year but early on. My association with you and the members of this community that gather for your dinner continues to be extremely rewarding. The people that I have met have broadened my investment view and enriched my life in many ways. It has also been a tremendous amount of fun and at times I may have been having more fun than I should on a "work" trip! I will be there this year and look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. I have bought dinner tickets, raffle tickets, silent auction items (Milos Raoncic signed professional tennis bag!) attended the Ivey Conference(twice) and this year for the first time the pre-AGM dinner for shareholders. I will be buying a ticket for the presentation and browsing the silent auction items. Your dinner is about much more than Fairfax and I am grateful to have been able to attend and look forward to doing so for many years to come. Thank you, Will -
Sanjeev- Thank you for another fantastic event. Congratulations on the growth of the dinner, its very exciting to see. Great job on the silent auction and as always the line up of speakers was terrific. Can't wait until next year, All the best to you.

I received my proxy information today and as foretold in Prem Watsa's annual letter his son Ben is being nominated for a board seat. In his bio in the proxy materials it says that Ben Watsa is: Partner and Portfolio Manager at Lissom Investment Management Inc., a private investment counselor that provides wealth management services for high net worth clients through the Owners Family of Funds, where he manages the Owners Opportunities Fund, a small and mid-cap. focused equity fund. The Lissom website is just a front page with no other detail. A web search with the fund name didn't provide much information. Does anyone have any additional insight into Ben Watsa and his credentials?

Buffett says will likely buy small business in Europe
Sea Island replied to Charlie's topic in Berkshire Hathaway
If Greece is still part of "western Europe" then Buffett is following Mr. Watsa's lead as Fairfax bought the "Home Depot" of Greece earlier this year. -
Assuming we all read the same interview he answers a couple of times that he would avoid mining, commodities and IT but does say he thinks some energy bonds are cheap.

How do Francis Chou's comments on commodities square up with his investment in Resolute Forest Products?

I whipped out my Z10 yesterday at a meeting and the reaction was as if I pulled out a moon rock. "Is that a blackberry??????" I like the idea of the Passport (the Z10 not so much) and I probably won't have to camp out for it. -
BTU indicated that China's change will result in more imports of thermal coal

The collapse in the share prices of coal companies has been spectacular. I would be interested to learn of other's opinions on the future of coal in the near and long term? It is projected to remain about a 1/3 of the energy generation fuel in the US.

New car Old car Leasing or Cash what do you do?
Sea Island replied to ASTA's topic in General Discussion
Buffett flies around on an $80 million aircraft so I don't think we should perpetuate this myth of value investors being down heel. Try to keep in perspective that your time on earth is short. We have been blessed with an amazing assortment of transportation options. Choose the one you like and enjoy it but enjoyment derived from ego is fleeting. -
There is a $10 div to pick up as well

Encana and Chesapeake are both cheap. Dirt Cheap and good values as well. If you don't want management screwing things up, try San Juan Basin Royalty Trust, SJT. -

FYI: They do take deposits of $5 for the key and $5 for the linens which are refundable at check out. http://www.canadianalodging.com/location.php -
I am looking for a white paper on the structural differences between US and Canadian healthcare from the perspective of an employer with employees in both locations. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

[amazonsearch]Robbert Hartog: A Lifetime of Changing Lives[/amazonsearch] The most interesting part of this book, which I purchased at the AGM last year, was that Hartog invested $400,000 in Fairfax in 1985 and never sold a share. Probably bought some more along the way. But buy and hold investing is so over...
