Nice one

Correct, but does it not only report US holdings and does Pabrai invest outside of the US and hold cash? Something to consider.
-
Enjoyed it tnx. Check your Pabrai data. See AUM data. As far as I know this article has the AUM about right. http://seekingalpha.com/article/309865-pabrai-funds-most-recent-investment-activity

SD, I like that one. It's a keeper. What about compounding though? I was trying to think about some kind of visual game or tool that can compress the time component and show the exponential tail end growth. Have not been able to come up with anything good though.

Great feedback thanks. Stahleyp; it's official you are weird! ;) Makes me think of this habit my oldest daughter "picked up" on. I will be standing somewhere and she will run up to me shouting. Daddy look what I found! It will be a coin she picked up from the sidewalk/floor somewhere. Anyway, good comments everyone thank you. Rkbang; the buckets is a good idea. I've been doing spending and saving, but did not break charity out into a separate bucket. I like it. Some more ideas on teaching them about compounding and delayed gratification anyone?

I have a 6, 3 and 2 year old and I've started to take an interest in how to teach them about money and investing. Two questions, 1. Any suggestions for good resources on the topic, and 2. what ideas and suggestions can you share that worked with your kids?

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-08-03/bank-of-america-sued-by-walnut-place-over-mortgage-securities.html What I really want to know is what EXACTLY it is that you don't like or why EXACTLY you think it is ok? Please be so kind and post the specifics of what he is doing wrong or why it is ok. Also see JSArbitrage's thread for discussion.

Why would you want to limit it in the first place?

I still think in the period from 2008-2018 the losers and winners will be broadly separated by those that focused on the macro and as a result were mostly sitting on the sidelines, because it will be volatile without taking any significant direction up or down over that period. Then there will be those that kept their heads down and grind it out by focusing on the fundamentals, whilst not being overly greedy or fearful. I prefer to keep my head down and ignore the noise.

Absolutely. A bit like the notion to always surround yourself with people smarter than yourself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Leighton Leighton's Ten Golden Rules of Business:[10] 1) Keep it simple 2) Focus on execution 3) Listen to your operators 4) Think small. Small is big 5) Less often is more 6) Your people come first 7) Think like a customer 8) If in doubt, do the right thing.... 9) ....but then do things right 10) Remember, EGO stands for "edging good out"

1994.09 SP500 466.96 2011.09 SP500 1,136.90 Rate 5.4% Paulson 14.0% Outperformance 8.6% I assumed with 14% you meant compounded. Further, assuming my quick numbers are correct then it is actually outstanding. The SuperInvestors of GD ville outperformed by just over 6% and Buffett double that.

The Big Dig: Fed Data Shows Households Attack Mountain of Debt
MrB replied to Parsad's topic in General Discussion
http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7389750n&tag=contentMain;cbsCarousel The future for America is bright if this girl saves and invests and don't end up with an idiot for a fund manager, rather than consumes, look to her home as her main source of wealth and depends on her credit score to get her through life. The country's whole attitude has to change. -
Head office cost for co's like Berkshire, Fairfax, etc.
MrB replied to MrB's topic in General Discussion
I just used those companies as an example of the structure. I'm looking at a much smaller company and in a valuation report the cap head office costs actually end up being 10% of the EV. However, I am not sold on the logic of the idea, which is what my questions are aimed at. -
Analysis question. If you did a sum of the parts analysis for a co like Berkshire, Fairfax, etc. Would you then capitalize head office cost? If so then at what rate and why?
-
Anybody has some good research supporting valuations for asset/fund managers please? Percentage of AUM, multiple of revenues, EBITDA and the supporting data please? Much obliged.
