  1. Hello,

KraftHeinz is a recent example of a huge writedown on its brands Kraft and Oscar Mayer. How do these huge writedowns come about and what are the motivations? Because measuring values of intangible assets is not easy after all since I am not aware of a unified method in coming up with a value for an intangible asset. And if that is the case, how does one do the complete opposite (writing an intangible asset down)?

In Ben Grahams books readers were referred to always trying to find the fairest value of an intangible asset (or an asset at all). So the conclusion was to not completely write down intangible assets as well as to not overstate them but grant them a fair value. However I do not remember the exact method as to how (got to reread that  ;D).

    Any Ideas?

  2. Hello!

Does anyone know where I can get daily sales statistics of the Dow and S&P? Ideal would be an overview of how much revenue has been made each day. So for instance on the first of October the transaction volume of the S&P was at blablabla.

Because depending on the volume that has been traded during the last month for instance you may be able to identify an upcoming consolidation. Obiously it may be just one factor, but still it would be useful I think.

  3. Hello,

does anyone have a clue what happens with defaulted bonds in your portfolio? Few decades back one could buy bonds physically so no one could actually take them away from you once they were worthless. But what happens when you bought them electronically into your portfolio and they default? Will the broker simply remove them?

If yes, what happens with your claims in case the bonds are being revalued by the original issuer?

    Thanks for reading!

  4. What issue? Or any issue? I think some are not responding to you because if you haven't found the prospectus in 2 months of searching then this might not be the best idea for you. At least keep it in mind when you review.

I searched "venezuela government bond prospectus" in Google to find this.

    Prospectus:

Example of where they are located:

Yes this is certainly a starts thanks. I am looking for this one: USP7807HAP03.

EDIT: Got it! The words "bond terms" are apparently the wrong ones. "Prospectus" seems better. Thank you so much! https://settysoutham.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/pdvsa21prospectus.pdf

"I am currently thinking of speculating with venezuelan bonds under certain circumstances."

curious what those circumstances are?  i would note that there is recent US law that (if i recall correctly) bars US citizens from buying new refi bonds. so this will be a russian led refi imo.  plenty sticky situation.

The first requirement would be that they default. I am not a US citizen and I do not intend to buy anything from the current government as well as recently issued securities. If I analyse the bond I will probably open a new thread showing my analysis for some feedback.

  5. Hello,

    as I emphasised here:

Instead of buying now or even when the current government is in charge, I would rather go for it once the government is gone and the bonds default. Since there are many HFs engaged as well as Goldman Sachs having their hand in there, I am sure the US will not be keen to make any further trades with the new government as long as their "old" debt is not paid. In that respect I have to admit that I do not understand GS to the fullest. The highest chance for profit basically occurs once the bonds default, which tells me they either believe in the govenment or they intend to buy more once the bonds defaulted to influence the new government.

Does anyone know where to find the bond terms?

I like MrB`s approach because I did not think of that so far, thank you for that.

I am currently thinking of speculating with venezuelan bonds under certain circumstances. The trouble is I can not manage to find the bond terms since I am sure they will include information that is inevitable to know. Does anyone on this board have an idea where to find them?
