  1. https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/ransomware-hack-recipe-unlimited-restaurant-cyberattack-1.4847487

On Monday, Recipe Unlimited — formerly Cara Operations — said it was hit with a "malware outbreak" that's affecting operations at a "limited number" of its restaurants including brands Swiss Chalet, Harvey's, Milestones, Kelseys, Montana's, Bier Markt, and East Side Mario's.

Several locations have temporarily closed as a result.

  2. It's big news here in Manitoba. It took a long time to get this deal done. They see some value in this as they kept going after the deal. Hopefully the line gets back into service before freeze up.

I'm not sure what the value is at this point but they also got the port.

Fairfax will be partnering with first nations to purchase the rail line and the port.

This is a pretty big deal here in Manitoba. It means that rail access to the Churchill will resume at some point  (2018 ? ). The rail line was washed out in some areas in 2017. All goods need to be flown into Churchill now.

This will be great for tourism and the communities that rely on the rail line.

  4. From what I have read the locomotive would be pulling a special car right behind it that can hold Liquified Natural Gas (LNG).

You can see the CN version from 2012.

    http://hhpinsight.com/rail/2012/10/cn-progress-on-lng-trains/

This is pretty brilliant for a couple of reasons

    1) NG gas trades at about $1.50 less per gallon

    2) BNSF has a delivery network in place. I'm sure most lines are close to NG fields.

    3) 30% of Natural Gas is often burned(flared) at wells for various reasons. States do not get royalties on flared gas. States like North Dakota want to find an alternative use for flared gas. Pulling up railcars to a well and harnessing flared gas seems like a wonderful thing.

I can only hope that this will make diesel cheaper for my Passat TDI.

  5. Upgraded from Bold 9780. I have iPod touches, ipads, samsung galaxy TAB 10.1 and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

I gotta say the z10 is a pretty good phone. I'm missing some apps but I can deal with it. I can also run android apps if I really need to.

The z10 interface is very swooshy. I like the interface better than android.

  6. One thing I am not fond of is the lack of underwriting profits.  Sure you are betting on good capital allocation, protection to the downside, etc., but the lack of uw profits at an insurer bothers me.

Not a big deal for others?

    Trying to dig into Fairfax...

bear in mind underwriting for longer running FFH insurance subs are much better than those that have only been acquired recently.  If they stop acquiring insurance companies, the underwriting would look a lot better.

Also the amalgamation of Northbridge companies should help drive down the combined ratio in the short term (1-3 years).

I'm not a fan of Northbridge's amalgamation of it's companies. I think it's a big mistake long term. I think it dilutes the brands and doesn't force the companies to compete. I get the feeling that the might be too many consultants or MBA's on the Northbridge ship.

One a side note. I do want to learn more about sister companies that compete against each other. Unfortunately the only examples I have are car companies such as Volkswagen Group (Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley ) and GM of the 1930's. Both of which are/were extremely well managed.

  7. This has been bugging me all weekend.  My thoughhts are clear but disjointed.

Its a good thing shooter killed his mother.  She would either have committed suicide or been murdered for providing him with weapons.

The only use for guns per Lynyrd Skynyrd is for killing.... they aint no good for nothin' else.

Eliminating ALL guns would dramatically reduce the homicide rate.

If you are afraid your government is going to abuse its power enough that you need semiautomatics at home, then your in more serious trouble.  The only way you will go down is by fighting.  Recall Waco.  This is a poor excuse to own weapons.

The NRA needs to have one of its conventions blown up by an aggrieved parent to show them what it feels like.

In order to make American streets safer all drugs need to be fully legalized, and money spent on the war on drugs put into treatment.  I disagree strongly with Cardboard on this.  People with mental health issues already abuse drugs.  Legalizing them at ever step in the process will not change that fact.  Police can then focus on getting sick people into treatment instead of into jail.

Obtaining weapons for hunting, if one must, should be extremely heavily regulated.

Of course none of this is going to fly in the USA where "freedom" trumps all else, including childrens lives.  Freedom to live in fear.  Gotta love it.

Dont get me wrong.  I love the US.  I just think that your priorities as a Nation are very mixed up.

You have a pretty warped view of the US I think.  His mother may or may not have committed suicide (not knowing her I have no way of knowing the answer to that), but she most certainly wouldn't have been murdered.  Vigilante justice is rare even when someone is to blame for an atrocity (OJ was never murdered), it is unheard of for someone to go after a murderer's mother.    Also, many Americans value our freedom above almost all else, but don't walk around in fear.  Don't let a rare event skew your perception of the world.  Yes there are bad neighborhoods that have been completely destroyed by the welfare state combined with the war on drugs, but in general the US is a pretty safe place to be and getting safer every year.

I sure hope people on this board don't let emotions drive their investment decisions the way they drive their politics.

I bet new schools will be designed with bullet proof glass, multiple interior doors that slow the progress of intruders and schoolyard with a 20' brick fence.

    Looks more like a prison

  9. I need a new printer at home for printing out 10ks, etc. I can go as high as necessary on purchase price; I'm shooting for the lowest cost per page. Any recommendations?

I really like monochrome laser printers for home. I like printers that support postscript. We stopped buying HP's and started to buy Lexmarks a couple years back at work.

We bought 120+ Lexmark e260dn's 6 months ago and they have been really great. Toner's tend to be more expensive than HP but the Photoconduction kits(or maintenance kits) are 1/8th the price of HP's.

The e260dn is a network printer. It doesn't support wireless. dn mean duplex+network. If you don't need to wire the printer on the network, then you can also get a e260d which is slightly cheaper.

We also buy x364dn's where we need a multifunction device.
