  1. Only have had an account here (Merrill Edge) since the summer 2020. I do like all their research info. Have accounts elsewhere, don't believe in putting all my eggs in one basket  ;)

Was with Interactive Brokers for years, for trading they were good but had poor customer service. Did like them for tender offers though.

  2. I have had  an account with them for just a little over a year and have been pleased. Very easy to use and move money to and from bank account. Their gold account which is their version of a margin account charges flat monthly fee. Their cash account is free. Both account types have FREE trading.

  3. This reminds me of my friends Aunt, who past away back in the late 90's. Most of her wealth was made between 94-99 era. Her portfolio holdings were about 1.5mil in 94-95 and by 1998-99 over 4mil. A couple of her top holdings were sysco (syy) and coca cola (ko). She was a very cute old lady from Ireland that kept a pulse on the market. From what I new of her she lived a semi-frugal life while living in downtown Chicago.

I'm guessing that the janitors wealth snow balled over the last 6 years.

  4. Surprising part of XOM was he was in and out in a flash.(for BRK)

If I remember correctly at the time he bought XOM, he had a choice of AAPL in  400s, MSFT in 30s, ORCL in low 30s. At that point some posters here felt that his buying XOM as opposed to these other mega caps was sort of a vote on their relative value and riskiness. I find it interesting that the others are up at least 50% and XOM down to flat.

I guess XOM doesn't fall under this quote  ;-)

Buffett quote: “Our favorite holding period is forever.”

  5. Alleghany Corp. (Y)

I have owned this one on and off for the last 7-8 years. Very similar to Berkshire Hathaway. An insurance holding company with a portfolio of about 60 stocks with a large bond portfolio. Has a rich and interesting history dating back to the late 1920's. Originally a railroad holding company controlled by the Van Sweringen Brothers out of Cleveland Ohio.

Their top holdings as of last quarter were CVX V CSX WMB AAPL

a sizable position in BNSF before Buffett ever bought in.

Currently it trades slightly under book.

  7. Finished building a 10% position in AIQ. 2015 will be my concentration test year, i have now 50% in 3 stocks and 80% in 6. I am still under the impression that i am sufficient diversified.

    Hi Frommi,

Thats a concentrated portfolio you have. What percentage of cash do you hold in the portfolio? Like Patmo mentioned. How would you react to a large draw down on 2 or 3 of your holdings?

What works for Michael Bury, Mohnish Pabrai, or even Warren Buffetts early partnership days might not work as well for an individual.

  8. Wow thats a quick reply oddball :) Yes names and basic stats. Texas, Oklahoma, & North Dakota are some of the larger producing oil states. I know their are a half dozen more. I see plenty of people looking at the oil/energy stocks do to the declines. Was wondering if others were looking at other industries that are following oil down.
