  1. Does anyone know what historical recovery rates have been for subordinate bonds in the financial sector? Also, that logic seems to ignore the tax advantage of qualified dividends vs coupon payments
  2. Thanks for the link, though couldn't turn up the 2014 thread (not the easiest site to search, and I did search before posting this!). I'd really like to focus on the psychological/cognitive aspects of investing during that time, which that January thread covers, but does not directly address.
  3. Having not been in the position to invest at that time, I'd love to hear about people's experiences (financially, psychologically, emotionally, etc.) living and investing through the last cycle. How did you respond to the downturn? How difficult was it to double down when times were tough? What was the investing media telling you would happen in the markets? Saw a similar thread on the financialindependence subreddit which turned up some great responses - would love to see what people say here!
  4. What "value traps" do you guys see (or are invested in!) right now? Cheap but waiting for a catalyst? Thinking about investing in a small basket of these.
  5. despite the drop, implied crude pricing for E&P companies is ~$80/barrel right now - deceptively expensive. combined with a real possibility of prolonged production (even at prices below marginal costs), i'm a bit wary.
  6. A) You do not build a $14B hedge fund by simply being "smart" B) Last I checked, Yahoo!, Sony and Nokia were not being touted by a wide swath of investors before he got in. Of course every single stock traded is "someone's" idea at some point in time.... Another line in the article (not related to Chapman) said Loeb's goal is reportedly to manage $40B.....he just returned $1.4 to investors. All in all, a rather sketchy article. you're misattributing that first quote, though i don't disagree
  7. what brokers does everyone use? i assume i'm just looking for the one with the smallest fees per trade (have access to research otherwise) - currently on scottrade but want to see what else people out there use and the rationale.
  8. nate - what kind of returns have you been able to get? and how much time do you think you typically devote? i'm beginning to invest my savings - trouble is that i am limited on time right now and can only invest in either microcaps or mid/large caps for work reasons. i'd find it difficult to get a real edge in large caps, and have just begun considering the microcap space now.
  9. Couldn't find anything on this topic - does anyone actively use PEG ratios in their analysis? I'm relatively new to investing (and brand new to the board), and am still trying to wrap my head around growth and determining appropriate multiples/valuations behind them. I've seen people throw around PEG ratios here and there but never completely understand its rationale, or why it should approximate 1 at fair value. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has a real view on the matter (either for or against). Thanks!
