  1. "There is no denying the fact that the US has played a role in formenting Islamic extremism."

It is true but, at the same time we can't get too carried away with this blame oneself attitude.

It would be similar as saying that France and Germany are mostly responsible for the creation of the Nazis as a consequence of the Versailles treaty and are to be blamed for it.

Everyone has a choice as to how they are going to behave today and tomorrow. The past is the past and vengeance normally solves nothing.

    Cardboard

This is a poor analogy. The creation of the Nazis was a reaction to the Versailles treaty. US Foreign policy has DIRECTLY caused the growth of Islamic extremism by using islamic extremists as a strategic and tactical tool. More importantly it continues to this day. My guess is that you just don't know the depth of this collaboration.

  2. If the Americans and the Fifth Fleet leaves the Persian Gulf tomorrow, how long before Iran tries to invade Saudi Arabia and other Gulf allies? How many deaths and refugees is that going to mean?

Obama has tried appeasement with Iran, leaving town (Iraq) and not getting "too" involved in the region. Look at Syria as an example of where we did not get fully involved or Libya. Is that progress, success or the right direction long term for U.S. foreign policy?

Then if you meet a Muslim originating from the Middle East, tell them the name Israel instead of Palestine and see the reaction.

The problem is a lot more complex than people make it to be. You can stop all the bombing and involvement that you want from the U.S. or the West and death, war will still be raging.

By the way, is the U.S. involvement responsible for terrorism in the Kashmir, Philippines, Nigeria?

So yes, the West certainly has a share of responsibility for the hate that it is receiving but, that is not 100% of the story.

    Cardboard

Yes, the US is partly responsible for the terrorism in Kashmir and to a lesser extent the other two. Both by supporting and arming Pakistan along with the Mujahideen against the Soviets, some of whom later moved on to jihad in Kashmir. There is no denying the fact that the US has played a role in formenting Islamic extremism. Mainly by backing Saudi Arabia (whom you refer to as an ally) which has been funding radical movements all over the world, from Philippines to Bosnia.

Actually, if you consider Saudi Arabia to be an ally and worthy of support, you're also party to this radical ideology.

  3. Hey guys:

Before this goes too far off the rails....I would caution members to "check their privilege".

I am going to guess that most members of this forum come from a middle class or higher background.

I grew up in Detroit in the late 70's and early 80's.  The city was an ABSOLUTE nightmare.  Violence was absolutely almost out of control.  Society seemed to be coming apart at the seems.  Police were almost ineffectual.  The area I grew up in was the highest end part of Detroit, "Indian Village".  Very beautiful, very large houses built by industrialists in the very early part of the 20th century.  It was about 3 blocks wide by 12 blocks long.  It was surrounded on 3 sides by ghetto.  Over the years, on every block, people were killed, shot at, bludgeoned, etc.  Break ins and property crimes were too numerous to even keep track of.  Once my father was shot at by a  thief breaking into his car.  Luckily, he was not hit, and the thief took off after firing.  When the police were summoned, they asked if anybody was wounded, was the thief still there?  If not, they would be there sometime that night,  they came 3 hours later.

Gun ownership was not that common amongst the homeowners.  It should have been.

Why should people not be allowed to arm themselves if police are ineffectual?  People have a right to protect themselves and their property, rich & poor alike.

I think that some people who live in good areas and have led "sheltered lives"  tend to forget about this...

The problem with your argument is that it's not the people in the terrible parts of town that desire to be gun owners, nor are they the most vocal about 2A rights. It's people in rural areas that are politically conservative that are most likely to be vocal in this issue. It is not solely a utilitarian or safety issue, but the simple fact that some people just like guns and view it as a fundamental right. Not an existential battle to survive. Privileged people also want guns!

  4. LOL. I didn't say that I would vote for him and I was aware of some of the foolish things he said and gaffes he made.

However to my knowledge, he didn't lie as Clinton and he doesn't raise money from individuals and countries that undoubtedly get something in return. That is what I meant by baggage.

I still do believe that there is a high probability that he jumps in if Hillary is indicted. He is the VP after all and liked by Democrats. Stupidity doesn't count. It is agenda and popularity.

Can you answer my question about the judge?

  5. Does anyone really believe he eats like that all the time?  I dont.  I have read somewhere that he drinks diet coke when he wants to keep his weight in check and works out with a personal trainer.  I think it was discussed in Snowball.

He eats like that all the time, it's pretty well known by those around him. I was at a meeting a few years ago with Susie Buffett.

She talked about her dad's diet. It was fascinating.  "I've never seen my dad drink a glass of water. I've never seen him eat a vegetable other than

french fries or sometimes corn. I've never seen him eat fruit other than banana pie. He knows exactly how many calories he can

consume a day. My dad eats exactly what he wants. His typical dinner at home is a ham sandwich and a bowl of ice cream.

He used to try to motivate us kids to lose weight by offering us cash per pounds."

    So, he's a fat shamer?

  6. Go easy...we all make mistakes. How many of us on this board thought that Eddie Lampert, Bruce Berkowitz, Mohnish Pabrai, Tom Ward and Chad Wasilenkoff had the Golden Touch™ until reality set in?

It's not just giofranchi though. A few pages ago, critical comments about Ms. Holmes were dismissed by posters as driven by jealousy over seeing a talented woman do well. Somehow those voices are silent now.

  7. A man that is willing to cheat on his wife might be willing to do other things...A man that is willing to lie to 330mm Americans might be willing to do other things to.

I don't agree, and even if I did, are we to convict them for crimes they might commit? Maybe we need to stop expecting our elected leaders to be role models and paragons of virtue and instead focus on what effects they can wield with policy.

You seriously don't think Billy lying about what was going on in the Oval Office under oath was a serious matter?

If push comes to shove, you don't think Bill would lie about other more important issues?

He & Hillary have been involved in one shady, crooked, unethical deal after another, after another, after another.  If she gets elected, it is simply going to continue.  She & Billy need to be in the dustbin of history.

First of all, it is not proven that he lied under oath. Secondly, even if he did lie, I do not consider it a serious matter because the topic he lied about was not a serious matter.

  8. The topic of the lie does impact his legacy as president. He was not convicted of this federal crime because the Senate either didn't believe enough evidence existed or didn't believe the charges were serious enough. Furthermore, it is not even all that clear that he lied. The "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" comment was not made under oath. Under oath, he denied having a current relationship, which was correct. This is why it is significant that he was not convicted of the crime, and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Even if he lied, why should 330M Americans care that he lied about his extramarital activities? Why is that significant enough to overshadow his entire presidency?

  9. 1) Who a president sleeps with has no bearing on their ability to be president or the decisions they make as president. Bill wasn't a good/bad president because of his actions with Monica Lewisnky. Bill was a bad president because he lied under oath about it which is a Federal crime punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

Actually, perjury is not a serious crime and is rarely prosecuted. Plus, given the topic he was lying about, should we as citizens really care? Personally, I think whether a President is good or bad is decided by his use of policy to achieve the American public's interest, and only that.

Why not a third term for Obama while we are at it?

And regarding some WWIII with Trump, who is pushing Chinese buttons so hard in the South China Sea right now?

And I have never seen Russian planes harassing U.S. navy vessels like we have seen in recent times. Never!

Sometimes I wonder if Obama is not trying to make things so bad so that a state of emergency is declared in the Fall and that no U.S. election can be held. This way he could do his third term a la Roosevelt. Is that not his hero by the way?

    Cardboard

You need to catch up on history if you don't think China and Russia have behaved like this before. And if you mean the bolded, you are one crazy mofo.

I would love a third Obama term. The American people should thank God that they were lucky enough to have Obama as their president and be building statues of him everywhere. If they can fund it by raising taxes, even better!

YES!  Better yet I think we should enslave a bunch of israelites to build a giant pyramid, the largest the world has ever known, to serve as his final resting place for when he passes on to take his place next to Osiris someday.  All hail the mighty Obama, drone killer of many children, he who calls forth death from the skies!

See! Somebody gets it! That said I thought Obama was a supporter of Isis, not Osiris? Whatever, it's all the same, damn ancient Egyptians hated us for our freedoms!

  12. Maybe what's best for America isn't what's best for Israel or our "allies"? Perhaps Obama recognizes that.

Perhaps it is and Obama doesn't recognize it.

You realize that Obama's foreign policy neatly lines up with Donald Trump's worldview especially when it comes to relations with allies?

Is that supposed to be a favorable fact for Trump or an indictment of Obama?

It works both ways depending upon where you stand on the Republican nominee.
