  1. I wonder how much BNSF is (will be?) impacted by oil drop and possibly lower shale oil production.

Not a reason to sell BRK, but might be a reason for BRK stock to underperform for a while.

BNSF is probably temporarily impacted by the West Coast port labor slowdown issues causing major congestion in the whole logistics infrastructure.

  2. So.. beyond the philosophical debate, how can we invest and make money off this?  Like many industries, I figure at some point a couple of players will start to grow,consolidate/roll up, and dominate the industry to the benefit of their owners/shareholders.

  3. I think BAMSEC is still pretty undiscovered. I love  it.

    Bamsec.com

That's great. Such a simple idea. I hate scrolling through edgar. Thanks.

I like the layout by filing type they do.

CoBF, gurufocus, valuewalk, valueinvestingnews, google finance, cnbc, seeking alpha for their market currents

What do you use gurufocus for mostly?

I know it wasn't directed to me but I like the 10 year financials and ratios all on one page.

Similar, I like the 10 year financials, various ratios and valuation tools they have as well as a quick showing of guru/insider holdings. Also, like the various screens they have.

  4. So now that the year is over.

    My Roth IRA 42%.

    Wife's Roth IRA 51%.

This year I was more conservative than in the past few years, but the market was simply a freight train and as usual I was hit by a luck stick on a couple of occasions.

    2 big Roth IRA Milestones.

My Roth cracked 7 figures for the first time in early October.

On this final day of the year my wife's roth cracked $300k for the first time. (she had only 30k in it 2009 and has not contributed to it since)

30K to 300k since 2009 without contributions... that is impressive!

  5. Anyone has a good book on Icahn to recommend? I've never been too interested in the man, but maybe if I knew more about what he's done I would be..

King Icahn is a good biography.  It's a bit dated as it was written in the mid 90's but gives a good story of his career and life to that point.

  6. The Fed approved JPM's plan to buy back $15 billion worth of stock last year.  BAC is a lot stronger than JPM was last year.  I would be very disappointed if BAC were to only buy back $3 billion of stock next year.  Moynihan has said that all excess capital sitting on the balance sheet is there waiting to be distributed to shareholders.  I would hope he would take advantage of the low stock price with large amounts of buybacks.  He's also said that it is a priority to at least get back the shares that were issued during the crisis.  This is what BAC issued during the crisis....

    10/7/08 455 million @ $22

    5/19/09 1.25 billion @ 10.77

    12/3/09 1.29 billion @ 15

They should make it a priority to retire these 3 billion shares as Moynihan has said.

Did he say all excess returned to shareholders?  I thought the tune he's been singing was roughly 1/3rd buybacks, 1/3rd dividend, 1/3rd reinvestment

  7. interesting porfolio of financials and commodity type companies.. looks like he's going back to his old ways of heavy concentrating with the use of the kelly formula?

Yep, he's mentioned it a few times that he's going back to a more concentrated allocation.  He gathered the real lesson to be learned from the drop in 2008 wasn't more diversification but rather keeping more cash instead.

  8. Many of the stocks in the sector were already over valued even with the year long negativity, over valued from a G&D perspective.  Strayer is/was 9x of book value.

However, who is going to educate the population if there is not help from the private sector?  The government needs these companies if they truly want to educate folks as public sectors are already over crowded.  In addition, have you seen 4-year tuition at many universities?  There is some value around and some companies are really cheap, but of course they may get cheaper :)

    Cheers

I think there is definitely a place for the schools... maybe less so the generalized ones, but the specialized ones like the technical/trade schools, nursing/physician assistant schools especially fulfill a need out there.
