In his letter, Mr. Icahn reflects on the experience of 2008, noting that while it may sound "corny to some, the losses that were incurred by investors in our funds in 2008 bothered me a great deal more, in many respects, than my own losses."

Honestly this makes sense to me. I would do the same, depending on how my clients reacted. He has more money then he knows what to do with and doesnt want the stress / pain of dealing with other peoples money.
