  1. Today’s WSJ analysis puts Dallas at the top and DC, Montgomery county/MD and Northern Virginia right after. Given that 3 of the top 4 essentially form the DMV region, I wonder if folks here have looked  at ways to play this - perhaps, stock options in local housing/infra/real estate developers?

  2. Couldn't agree with this more. Think we've lost some fine members (ericopoly, kraven, wellmont, ni-co are a few that come to mind) to what felt like personal attacks in the recent past. Hopefully, we can be a bit more civil and tolerant as we continue to build this wonderful community.

I know lots of people have different points of views about this situation but here is mine.

CoBF is not just a message board but more of a community. Moreover it is a community made of pretty smart people. Yes we're all passionate about investing. But as a community of smart people we have other thoughts as well. Sometimes it's politics, sometimes it's philosophy, sometimes it's how we approach life.

Sometimes these "non investing" topics can get heated. It may be my "European" nature but I think that that's generally what happens in a community. It's how you work through diverging points of view and hopefully learn things and evolve. On the politics side I can say that I've learned a lot from rkbabang and DTEJD1997 despite the fact that I have different views from them. On the life/philosophy side there's been so much interesting stuff posted here that it's impossible to mention all the posters.

In closing, I think that if you start to choke this line of discussion or that line of discussion you kill the community aspect of the board and with it its dynamism. Some topics can get heated. But I remember that the Valeant thread was red hod. Nobody suggested that be shut down so people can take a breather. But in the end mine is only an opinion it's Sanjeev's board he can do with it whatever he pleases.

+1.  I don't think it is necessarily politics per se that is the problem, it is when people get rude and mean.  It should be possible to discuss any topic civilly.  What distinguishes politics is that it tends to bring out emotional responses, but that doesn't mean that a bunch of intelligent adults can't keep their emotions in check to have a reasonable discussion.  I don't blame Sanjeev for locking many of the topics he has locked.  The board is working fairly well IMHO.  Things can be discussed with minimal to no moderation, but Sanjeev steps in and locks topics only when people start getting out of hand.  I'd vote for no changes, except maybe people could make a conscious effort to be more civil when they post.  Re-read what you write before hitting post and make sure there are no ad hominem attacks and that you are focusing completely on ideas rather than attacking the other members personally.

  3. Reading the Fortune article just brought back bitter memories of my grandmother's long and difficult fight against PSP. I saw her valiantly fight the disease for 3.5 years before she lost the battle in 2013. Given the lack of understanding/awareness - even in the medical community - her condition was initially misdiagnosed as Parkinson's. Physical pain aside, what makes PSP one of the worst diseases of our lifetime is the fact that patients' awareness, memory and thoughts are largely intact but they can't express them --- it's almost like your mind is fine but you've become a prisoner jailed inside your own body. And the unfortunate part is that there isn't enough private funding that goes towards Research since it is so difficult to make progress when you're dealing with such rare brain diseases.

Nevertheless, I sincerely hope that Rainwater's dream team "the Tau consortium" can ultimately find a cure for PSP.

  4. Does anyone have any more info on the IPO? Thanks!

It was suggested to be 12 months roughly from the closing of the first acquisition.  So that would be roughly at year's end.

A new timeline hasn't been suggested as far as I know.

    Thanks Eric!

  5. Thanks jawn619 - I enjoyed reading your post and have been thinking about the same lately.  I invested in BP recently with a similar hypothesis: Everyone's selling because a) Oil prices are going down and b) there is a lot of negativity due to the legal issues BP's facing in the aftermath of the spill. I did some additional analysis but by and large, I made the investment because I wanted to be a contrarian.

However, I kept growing restless in the days that followed and finally decided to exit the position soon after. I felt much better because I finally realized that I had made an investment for the wrong reasons. The self-realization that the oil and gas sector (or commodities overall) was outside my circle of competence was also just as important!

    Best,

    Nikhil

  6. Looks like he is raising cash, or are there some new bigger foreign holdings?

No ideas, I haven't heard anything mentioned. But next Q it will be interesting to see what % of the portfolio is Fiat.

Minutes from the AGM session has that information on Page 96:

Seems like he has a pretty significant stake through Pabrai funds, Dakshana foundation and his own/family's investment/IRA accounts.
