RSS feed

Hi Sanj...thanks for taking the personal time to set this up.  It's a tremendous resource for the extended BRK & FFH communities.

Your board software has an RSS feed which I've been using.  Does the software have an option for "full feed" and "partial feed" or "headline only"?  I hope that it's not too much to ask, but it would be great for some of us if you could turn on the full feed.  Hopefully you're tracking upstream bandwidth and can establish a baseline before turning this feature on.  If it turns into an additional operational expense, that's not intended.

RSS feed readers (e.g. Google Reader) provide a great way to speed through the postings, especially if the full feed is available.  Then one can pick and choose the items to respond to.

Again...it's awesome what you've pulled together in your own time...thanks!  :)

Cheers,

-O

Hi Omagh,

Can you explain to me exactly what RSS Feed is, does and allows the user.  I know a little but I thought I might get more details.  As far as extra operational cost, I don't think it will cost anything more, because in my package I have unlimited bandwidth and unlimited data.

If you explain what it does exactly and how users can utilize it, I'll have a better understanding of how to turn it on and any other controls there are for it!  Yes, I'm not that tech-savvy!  Remember, I already crashed the whole system once!  :o  Cheers!

Sanjeev, an RSS feed would be like a newswire of all the posts in the forum as they're made. Usually the user hits refresh and it will automatically update grabbing the most recent posts.

The reason someone would want an RSS feed to the forum, rather than visiting the forum daily, is that they have services like Google Reader which allows you to add a bunch of different RSS feeds and keep track of them in once place.

So potentially, a user could be receiving new posts here (forum RSS feed), alongside new stories at the wall street journal (WSJ RSS feed), and 10-Ks from the SEC (SEC RSS feed)

Check out an example feed - use the following in the address bar of your browser:

feed://dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com/feed/

sanjeev,

you can see how this works and looks by going to http://www.google.com/reader

You will need a Google account to login (doesn't have to be a Gmail account, you can make an account with another email address).

After you are logged in... you can then click "Add Subscription" in the top left of the page http://www.google.com/reader  ....In the small popup box that appears just type in cornerofberkshireandfairfax.ca  --- this will add the RSS feed to your Google Reader account.  However, you will notice that it only lets you read the first couple of lines of each post.  To read the whole post it forces you to go back to the cornerofberkshireandfairfax.ca/forum website.  To allow users to read the whole post in Google Reader you would need to enable the full RSS feed as described by Omagh above.

Ok guys, I've found the setting, but it says "to disable, set to zero".  It then says setting to zero would be a bad idea?  Why is that?  Would it slow down the board?  Would it cause any problems with the posts or board?  Any other tech-savvy guys who can give me some idea why the program says it is a bad idea?  Is it just that it could increase the costs, but then we have unlimited bandwidth and data, so I don't see how it would.  Thanks very much!

Sanjeev,

I am not an expert on this either: but I found some information http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=291694.0 that suggests that publishing the full feed COULD put more processing load on the server. I don't think this will be a problem as this is a relatively small community of readers on this board (less than 2000 if I recall  correctly). For comparison, some forums would likely have 10 or 20 times as many users. Furthermore, I bet a lot of us will continue to access the forum via the website so that we can use other useful features such as the "Show unread posts since last visit" link at the top.

There is some more information about the forum software's RSS settings here:

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=25009.0

I believe this setting should only control the max length of each post published in the RSS feed.  It should be safe to experiment with different values.  Keep in mind, if your RSS feed reader caches the content you may need to click refresh to notice the changes to the post length.

I don't think it should cause much of a problem, though I don't know the details of your hosting provider (in terms of what hardware this board is running on).  I'm really excited to have a full feed available!  Though the bboard interface is significantly better than the old one, and so it doesn't seem too bad to me.

Let me call Godaddy.com's technical support and just ask them.  If there is no issues, I'll turn on the full feed and post that it is on here.  I'll do it in the next 30 minutes or so.  I'm just catching up on the morning emails and stuff.  Thanks!

Thanks Sanjeev...I really appreciate the extra effort to make things work, especially since this is on your personal time.  Thanks again!

Cheers,

Ok guys, no problem according to Godaddy.com.  I set it to zero, and now you should be able to get full feed.  Cheers!

I've been notified by a board member that our RSS Feed is no longer showing the authors of posts in Google RSS Feed Reader.  I've looked high and low, as well as all over the Simple Machines software, on how to change the settings, but there is no setting that needs adjustment.  Does anyone know if Google changed the way it presents RSS Feeds, or how to fix this issue?  Cheers!

If you go here, this is all the info sent to the RSS reader:

http://www.cornerofberkshireandfairfax.ca/forum/.xml/?type=rss

I don't see the authors name there, so I don't think the board's software is sending the author to the RSS readers.

Hi RK, yes that is the issue.  Do you know, or does anyone else know, if the author's name used to show up on the feeds?  I never use it, so I can't remember if it did or didn't show up.  Cheers!

They did at some point in the past, I will see if I can crawl through my google reader history to see when it stopped.

Not sure how useful this is, but if I go all the way to when I first subscribed in 2009 there are authors. I have scrolled back to Oct. 2012 so far and no authors. I will keep it scrolling in the background to see if I can find where it stopped.

Ok, so for some reason the RSS version of the feed does not contain the author, but the ATOM version does. If you care what the difference is:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6619717/what-is-the-difference-between-rss-and-atom-feeds

To use the atom feed, use this URL:

http://www.cornerofberkshireandfairfax.ca/forum/.xml/?type=atom

Instead of the of the one currently linked at the bottom for RSS which is:

http://www.cornerofberkshireandfairfax.ca/forum/.xml/?type=rss

Difference is the "type" parameter.

You can also customize your feeds by passing in different parameters to the URL query string, for reference:

http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/XML_feeds#Members

I confirmed that using ATOM in "Reeder" an OSX rss application shows the authors.
