Kraven Posted December 18, 2013 Share Posted December 18, 2013 In the spirit of the holidays, I think more important than returns are things I would like to see not appear on this board in the coming year. In no particular order and by no means an exclusive list: 1. "LOL", especially when it's just written into the middle of a sentence. 2. Emotions written out like there is a script. Things like "sigh" and the variation on that "*sigh*". Also, related to this would be something like "smacks forehead" after repeating something. 3. Contrasts made by saying "I'm looking at you [insert name of person or thing]". 4. Abbreviations of words that one has to be have been texting since they were 10 years old to understand. Guest Posted December 18, 2013 Share Posted December 18, 2013 I once heard a story, how true it is I'm not sure, but this parent would consistently put "lol" at the end of the sentence of a text message. Like, "Don't forget to pick up the milk, honey, lol" or, "We're having dinner at 6pm, lol" As time went on, not too many people thought much of it. Then one day a relative passed away. So the parent wrote something to the effect of "Grandma June passed away. Please keep her family in your thoughts. lol" and I think sent it as a mass text to the family. It's like all of these thoughts and comments have been bottled up just waiting to be unleashed on the board. They will add a thought to almost any subject. Also, 5 is probably the biggest issue with the board, but it is understandable. I posted way too much when I first joined too. Perhaps I still do. I think the newbies get so excited that something like this exists after they emerge from the purgatory of yahoo message boards and motley fool and seeking alpha comments and have an urge to participate. I know I do. The debates are almost always very civil and both sides generally are trying to seek the truth, rather than just scream at each other and make ad hominem attacks. It's truly something special. Even the ever exclusive VIC comment streams can be worse than here. So who wants to debate the value of Jim Chanos and alpha generating shortsellers? As support for a statement using a Buffett or Munger platitude and considering that to be the end of discussion. LOL *Smiles* I agree somewhat I think thepupil is right that there is quite a bit of excitement when someone first finds this board and realizes the wealth of information on it. I certainly acted the same way when I first started out. The again, I've been here three years and only have about 500 posts. You may be 100% certain that something is going to happen, but that is usually just an opinion until it either happens or doesn’t, only then is it a fact. I agree with this too -- I think having more information and opinions (within reason, I suppose) is generally going to be a net positive for this board. I'm going to add YOLO to this list. Is this parkinsons law at work? I looked up a bunch of these multipage threads, and they mostly didnt perform very well over the past few years.
