Oh geez!  I'm sure Sam Antar and Gary Weiss will finally crawl back out from under their rocks to write about this!  Like I said before, what the hell is wrong with Americans and their obsessions with guns?

You just have a frickin' loaded Glock lying around in a gym bag in your closet?  Loaded...no trigger lock...and just sitting in a bag where anyone can get their hands on it, not to mention a relatively high-profile CEO accidentally packing his luggage in it and trying to board a flight.  You guys are retarded down there!  ;D  Cheers!

Agree with your comments but at least he is licensed to hold a concealed weapon and nothing was loaded in the chamber. Probably a slap on the hand and long lineups at the Airports to follow. But, it's certainly the wrong time to make such a mistake. Then again, when you learn the guys story - I can understand why he got his concealed weapon license.

If I was Patrick I would have a loaded Glock ,a retired ex Navy Seal and a big old Rotweiler as my constant companions, he has ticked off some really bad people and he is onefearless mutha if you ask me.

I have a Glock as well as a Mossberg 500 home defense shotgun. Funny thing is I that I tend to side with the liberals on weapons, yet there are so many wackos out there with them, that i feel the need to have one until other people can't have them. Catch 22.

A guy who was a long term prosecutor in Washington DC had an interesting editorial this month about the paradoxical effect of the DC gun ban.  When the ban was finally declared unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court, the murder rate in DC almost immediately was cut in half.

No link, but the article can be googled.

DC is like Chicago - toughest gun laws in the country and high homicide rate.  Actually is the deadliest city in the country/world.  No concealed carry in IL either, but that will change within months as the courts have ordered it.

As the article above states. Guns and/or gun control (where permitted) isn't the reason for homicides. Urban poverty is.

Personally I'm against guns, but we should also consider Patrick Byrne made himself probably a lot of enemies while hunting the Sith Lord from the dark side of Wall Street with his website DeepCapture.com. He tried to expose the organized hedge fund crime rings into the public spotlight, that did the illegal naked shorting in Overstock and Fairfax. I could imagine that he got perhaps hidden death threats. Imagine yourself to be in Byrne's position, and walking alone at some dark parking lot. I remember even Sanjeev said back then that he himself should be very careful. I personally think that Patrick is some very reasonable guy, that wouldn't use a gun hasty. He only got caught accidentally in some silly situation.

I would prefer he hire a bodyguard.  And if he is going to carry a gun to protect himself, then be smart enough to know where it is all the time.  This guy is very smart...how could he be so reckless as to just leave it another bag?  Cheers!

Its pretty evident that the NRA  and their supporters are better funded , motivated and organized than their opposition. The gun merchants want every body packing ,no restrictions and every one afraid ,its very good for business. They also like the a lot of political debate  and fiery rhetoric about restrictions , every time there is public outrage after a massacre and debate about restrictions sales go through the roof. The simple fact is if the US had the same kind of gun laws as other civilized countries the murder rate would collapse not disappear but decline procipitously. Its just a lot harder to kill some one through other means it takes much more effort. Does any one think the world would be a safer place if all contries had nuclear weapons. I for one would not want to live in that world  and thank fully because of my age I will not likely ever have to live in that world. The US has by far the most effective nuclear arsenal on this planet but that is zero defense against a rogue actor  with a nuke. Likewise all the security in the world is no defense against a lunatic with a hand gun if one thinks back to the Reagan shooting. It took a war and a constitutional amendment to erase slavery in the US there fore the US constitution is not a perfect document. Lets not have a world where the gun is pried from your cold dead hands because some nut case with an assault rifle opened fire at your kids foot ball game. I do not want terrorist organizations with nukes and I do not want crazies with assault rifles. Sorry in advance for the rant and the spelling errors.

Constructive, that's a good point.

However... things got deeply personal with some of the short sellers.  Sam Antar is unhappy that Byrne (and/or his associates) stalked him and started dragging his ex-wife into it.  Of course, I doubt that Antar would really go out of his way to harm Byrne.  Antar feels that Byrne crossed the line.

*No position in Overstock, though I have a limit order to short it if the share price gets short squeeze high.

When did Byrne stalk Antar and his wife?

Antar has written one non-descript article after another on Overstock.com, along with Fairfax and Francis because they were shareholders.  Antar's cronies Gary Weiss and Tracey Conen also wrote one article after another on Overstock.  They especially were active each time the stock was heavily shorted, but their articles disappeared every time the shorts lost on a bet.

Antar, along with Tilson at one point, funded Barry Minkow's "Fraud Discovery Institute"...but now that Minkow is serving time again, Antar has somewhat disavowed himself from Minkow.  A known felon funding another known felon until he went to jail again.  What credence does Antar's articles deserve?  It's like Lance Armstrong writing about ethical and honest management!  Cheers!

Hmm Antar seemed very pissed on his blog.

wife

EX-wife

Antar has somewhat disavowed himself from Minkow.

Yeah that's embarrassing for him to have been taken in.

Actually I'm disappointed at how little fraud Antar has found in general.

Anyways, I will probably just watch all this drama unfold from the sidelines.  I never really researched this stock.

Don't let the facts get in the way.  I sleep safe at night with our door unlocked half the time because the potential burglar never knows what might happen if he crosses my threshold.  That's a lot more deterrence than having policemen on the prowl night and day.  I don't need to own a firearm because some of my neighbors do.

When a  pistol became  practical to carry, it was called the great equalizer.  Before then, the toughest pugilist or someone who was good with a blade or any gang could steal or kill with impunity.  I can take care of myself, but a diminutive lady I know surprised me recently by telling me that she always carries a pistol in her purse when she goes downtown. She's an expert marksman. and knows how to use her pistol.

Real story: In the 1950s Harold Smith was the only person in his Reno, Nevada Casino straightening up one morning when some Mafiosi who wanted to take over the town came in and started tearing up his  place.  Harold pulled a sawed off shotgun out of his drawer, put it on the counter and said, "You boys are up a little early this morning, aren't you?"

They tucked tail and got out of there.  End of confrontation , no bloodbath.  :)

This is a good point and one I rarely see brought up by those who want to see guns out of the hands of the public.  When I see a man make a statement for elimination of guns I laugh because it is easy for him to say, he has the upper hand over half the population (women) by being physically stronger.  96% of violent offenders in jail are men, and women are easy targets.  A gun in the hands of a woman levels the playing field.  What would be the effect on rape, assault, and muggings if all women were issued a hand gun to carry in their purses and properly trained in its use?

The only thing I find insane and retarded is that Byrne isn't allowed to carry his Glock onto a plane.  When I ride in a car, take a bus, ride the subway, etc.  I can carry my Glock. When I get on a plane I'm disarmed by my own government and at the mercy of 3 guys with razor blades.  That is insane.

That said, I am not a CEO of a public company and even I realize that not intending to hurt anyone is no protection from a government hurting you if you don't follow their insane laws.  I wouldn't carry my Glock in a gym bag and try to get on a plane.  Which is the reason why I don't like to fly.  That and I'm not a big fan of body cavity searches.

Where guns are outlawed, terrorists need only boxcutters.

If that little lady had been in the audience in the theater in Colorado or in the school in Connecticut or on the Island in Skandinavia, there might have been a shooting, but there wouldn't have been a massacre.

You accidentally discharge your gun and shoot a hole in the front window of a bus.  Not that catastrophic.

On a plane?

Not that catastrophic.  Mythbusters did an episode on this.  They pressurized a plane and shot a hole in the fuselage.  Nothing.  They blew out an entire window.  A lot of wind, but nothing catastrophic.  Then they blew a big hole with some explosives and it was quite impressive...very catastrophic.    A few bullet holes or even an entire window isn't a big deal, if this were not the case there is no way anyone (pilots, air marshals, or anyone else) would ever be allowed to bring a firearm onto a plane.  If you were really worried about that though, you could load up with frangible ammo.

Or alternatively she could be one of the victims. The proliferation of arms in the US is simply an arms race run amok. The best defense against a crazy with an assault rifle is not another gun. It is a set of sensible laws that keeps the assault rifle out of the crazy guys hands in the first place. The gun merchant lobby how ever knows that the best thing for their business is easy unfettered access to lots of guns. I realize that I will change no ones mind so I better stop now.
